    • 'We Built This City' is awful. I remember it being all over both Radio 1 and Capital Radio at the time and I felt like switching the radio off everytime the song was played. That said, as awful as it is, the group managed to outdo the awfulness in 1987...

Bryan Adams seems to be a bit late getting into the festive spirit.

Someone I used to work with back in 1989 / 1990 was in a relationship with one of the members of FM, I forget which one it was. According to Discogs 'Frozen Heart' was FM's debut release. Was it a re-entry in this chart as it is shown on the OCC website as being a minor hit in November 1985. If it had already charted on the Rock chart I've overlooked it.

Frozen Heart reached #11 in November.

Lots of drop-outs and re-entries recently, for whatever reason.....

Personally I didn't mind Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now nearly as much as WBTC. It had the same smug feel to it but the our-love-will-last-forever lyrics were more conventional and not as...…..what's the word I'm after.....fatuous?

It's still hard to believe Bernie Taupin was involved....

          • Very interesting. What other charts were in Sounds?

Sounds published an interesting variety of charts throughout the late 70s and early 80s: Metal, Rock 'n' Roll, Punk, Reggae, Disco, "Alternative", "Oi!" but often on an erratic basis or from inconsistent sources.

They even published a World Singles Chart for a few months in '83 (I posted a few examples of these in this forum a few months ago).

By '86 they'd calmed down and were restricting themselves to Metal, Indie and Reggae....

I also never understood the attraction of 'We Built This City'. However, I absolutely adored their next single "Sara" then, though it didn't become a hit in the UK. Not a rock song by any means too.

I'm looking for "TOP POPS/MUSIC NOW" and "MERSEYBEAT / MUSIC ECHO" Charts to complete my 60's singles charts collection.

                • Things are about to get worse.... much worse. Look what was top of the "rock" charts in August.

I can't believe Kerrang! actually went along with charts (albums, too) featuring Chris De Burgh!
He's actually done some good rock-based music but to put him in any kind of chart like that is absurd.

From the same week, they also list Indie Metal (independent labels) with Metallica top - along with US HM Radio and a different "Local Chart" every week.

Sadly Number One magazine were not printing their rock charts at this stage - they expanded later in 86/87. So i can't even provide a decent national chart alternative.
Tony's Charts ft Hits / Albums (1st August 20) - Black Honey, Sylvan Esso, Flock Of Dimes, Zella Day, Tate McRae, Hurts, Wye Oak, Shlohmo, Sody and Cavetown, Billie Eilish, Kate Rusby, Tim Arnold, Taylor Swift, The Naked and Famous, John Foxx and The Maths, Clan Of Xymox, Dolly Parton, Jessy Lanza, Seasick Steve...

                        • I bought 'Silent Running' back in March 1986. It's a good song though radio must have been playing an edited version as the single version seemed to be longer, a bit longer than it needed to be in fact. The lyrics were written by B.A. Robertson who also wrote the lyrics to M&TM big hit from 1989, 'The Living Years'.

One of my favourite singles by Heart is in at number 16 though it would take two years and a re-issue before it became a UK top 40 hit.

I liked Silent Running musically but always felt the lyrics were a tad clumsy. Then the promo video tried to put a science fiction spin on them which just came across as pretentious....

A year later Johnny Hates Jazz had a much bigger hit with the very similar sounding Shattered Dreams....

Agree about These Dreams - one of Heart's strongest tracks (and a rare lead vocal for Nancy Wilson).

                            • I'd not noticed the similarity between 'Silent Running' and 'Shattered Dreams' but thinking about it, yes, there is a certain similarity between the two tracks.

                                  • Not a bad Top 3 on the last chart. Even Top 4... It's a pity that Sara is sliding down the chart...
I'm looking for "TOP POPS/MUSIC NOW" and "MERSEYBEAT / MUSIC ECHO" Charts to complete my 60's singles charts collection.
