  • Irish Singles Charts 1971

As previously featured in the thread Irish Singles Charts 1970-1972

with contributions mainly from CZB, Shakyfan and Beatlened

Instead of posting in the older thread, this new thread will hopefully serve as a better more presentable listing of the Irish singles charts for that period. Updating the older thread will leave many original notations which make no sense now. A lot of corrections have been identified since then. 1971 still has many unknowns but all of the top 10s are now known. I intend to do updates for 1967 to 1971 and this will be the one with the most gaps. The others should be a lot clearer.

I'll incorporate any notes from the original thread if they're still relevant.

A note about dates. The original thread used the dates from Spotlight Magazine as they were the chart compilers. Spotlight's cover dates were about a week ahead of when the magazine hit the streets I'd imagine.

Most of the Top 10 charts were published in the Evening Echo, whose publication date predated the dates from Spotlight but those charts were published courtesy of the magazine, which must have been published before the Echo.

Chart books from Eddie Kelly (the Complete Guide to Ireland's Top Ten Hits) and Larry Gogan (The Larry Gogan Book of Irish Chart Hits) also used different dates. In the case of the Gogan dates these can not possibly be anywhere near the actual date that the chart was published as they are almost 2 weeks ahead of Spotlight's cover date and over a week ahead of the Echo. We have to consider that the charts published in the Echo were the then current charts. Kelly's dates were probably very close to Spotlight's street date and are within a week of the Echo.

Because of this problem I've listed the dates as week 1, week 2 etc and noted the various dates associated with the publications above.

Top 18 records identifiable from "last week" figures but 3 other records should be in this chart according to Larry Gogan's book; From the "Top Irish Records" chart Red Hurley is 3 places ahead of the Brendan Shine record that has an extra week. I've removed Brendan from this top 20

REASON TO BELIEVE dropped from the chart this week, in the Evening Echo at least, the only chart I have. In its first week it was only listed in (Brackets) after Maggie May in Spotlight.

WILD MOUNTAIN ROSE peaked at #14 but none of its weekly data is known. It does appear in the Top Irish Records chart either side of these 2 weeks so, while I initially thought it might not belong here, it surely does.

Only 15 positions identified from "last week" figures

Eddie Kelly credits Tina with 1 week at no. 1, succeeded by Tommy Drennan for 2 weeks. Larry Gogan gives Tina 2 weeks and Tommy 1 week. In other words the chart for week 51 is repeated by Larry Gogan. The chart for Week 52 is repeated by Eddie Kelly. Larry lists no new entries for week 52.

I've chosen to go with Eddie Kelly here because his book is far more accurate. Therefore this is the final chart of 1971 and not the one from the week before. It also becomes the first chart for 1972 as no new chart was compiled.

Spotlight isn't available to check. When Spotlight published its chart on 8 January 1972 the weeks on chart column allowed for no double week.

The five hits with unknown positions are taken from the weeks attributed to those hits in Larry's book even allowing for him counting a different chart twice.
