  • Irish Singles Charts 1968

Previously part of the Irish Singles Charts 1967-1969 thread, this is an amended and complete look at the singles charts from 1968. There is no missing data for this year.

Contributions in the original thread mainly from Beatlened, smiffj and CZB.

I'll incorporate any notes from the original thread if they're still relevant.

A note about dates. The original thread used the dates from Spotlight Magazine as they were the chart compilers. Spotlight's cover dates were at least a week ahead of when the magazine hit the streets.

Top 20 charts were also published in the Evening Herald (for 2 weeks), Evening Echo, Drogheda Independent and Evening Press, all published on different dates. Westmeath Independent and Sligo Champion also published the chart on occasion.

Chart books from Eddie Kelly (the Complete Guide to Ireland's Top Ten Hits) and Larry Gogan (The Larry Gogan Book of Irish Chart Hits) also used different dates.

I've listed all of the dates and numbered each chart week, week 1, week 2 etc.

From Spotlight "This week we publish the first chart compiled specially for us by a prominent Irish market research company. Great care is being taken to ensure that this chart is the most accurate list of best seling records ever compiled in this country and we strongly urge all record dealers and wholesalers to give their utmost co-operation and attention to our representatives' requirements, particularly during the difficult trial weeks."
From this week chart compilation for Spotlight was taken over by the Market Research Bureau of Ireland Ltd (MRBI)
The Evening Herald stopped publishing the 1968 charts from this week; the postions in brackets are the "Last Week" positions shown in the Drogheda Independent. The paper for the previous week is unavailable. I presume that these were the positions from a test chart published before the new company's charts were official; No other publication published "Last Week" positions
