Kenny Rogers Has the Top Two Best-Selling Songs of the Week
            3/30/2020 by Gary Trust

The two top-selling songs of the week belong to late legend Kenny Rogers, as "The Gambler" soars in at No. 1 on Billboard's all-genre Digital Song Sales chart, followed by "Islands in the Stream," with Dolly Parton, new at No. 2.
The classics, released in 1978 and 1983, respectively, surge as fans celebrated Rogers' music following his death on March 20 at age 81.

"Gambler" vaulted by 5,543% to 21,000 downloads sold in the week ending March 26, according to Nielsen Music/MRC Data. The Don Schlitz-penned standard becomes Rogers' first No. 1 on the all-genre Digital Song Sales chart, as well as the oldest song ever to lead the list, which began in 2004. It passes Prince and the Revolution's 1984 opus "Purple Rain," which led in May 2016, following Prince's death.

Meanwhile, "Islands," written by the Bee Gees, increased by 4,723% to 15,000 sold.

Rogers accounts for nearly a quarter of all the titles on Digital Song Sales, as 12 entries from his catalog debut. (Before this week, he had never previously appeared on the chart.) Only three acts have ever boasted greater weekly shares of the survey's top 50 spots: Prince (as many as 21 songs), BTS (18) and Michael Jackson (17).

Here's a rundown of Rogers' songs on the latest list.

Kenny Rogers on Digital Song Sales Chart

            No. 1, "The Gambler" (21,000, up 5,543%)
No. 2, "Islands in the Stream," with Dolly Parton (15,000, up 4,723%)
            No. 7, "Lady" (10,000, up 6,215%)
No. 9, "Through the Years" (9,000, up 5,282%)
No. 13, "We've Got Tonight," with Sheena Easton (7,000, up 7,230%)
No. 20, "Coward of the County" (6,000, up 4,517%)
No. 24, "She Believes in Me" (5,000, up 7,578%)
            No. 26, "Lucille" (5,000, up 6,847%)
No. 28, "You Can't Make Old Friends," with Parton (5,000, up 24,021%)
No. 37, "Ruby, Don't Take Your Love to Town," with The First Edition (4,000, up 6,836%)
No. 40, "You Decorated My Life" (4,000, up 8,816%)
No. 50, "Don't Fall in Love With a Dreamer," with Kim Carnes (3,000, up 7,077%)

"Gambler" and "Islands" also re-enter the streaming-, airplay- and sales-based Hot Country Songs chart, which they topped for three weeks in 1978 and two weeks in 1983, respectively.

"Gambler" returns to the tally at No. 14, having drawn 5.2 million U.S. streams (up 462%) and 1 million in airplay audience in the tracking week. "Islands" re-enters at No. 20, with 3.1 million streams (up 378%) and 1.1 million in radio reach.

As previously reported, Rogers additionally claims the No. 1 title on the Top Country Albums chart, as his 2018 set The Best of Kenny Rogers: Through the Years (which includes "Gambler") debuts at the summit, marking his first leader on the list since 1986.

Billboard to Temporarily Suspend Boxscore, Dance Club Songs Charts
              3/31/2020 by Billboard Staff

The surveys are scheduled to return on a date to be determined.

Amid the widespread social distancing being practiced in reaction to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, Billboard is suspending the weekly Billboard Boxscore and Dance Club Songs charts.

The pauses reflect the numerous postponements and cancellations of live music events, from individual artist tours to festivals and more, as well as the closures of clubs, against the backdrop of quarantining as public gatherings are limited and/or prohibited throughout the United States and worldwide.

The most recently updated Dance Club Songs chart, until further notice, is dated March 28. Billboard Boxscore will update once more, on March 31, with the survey dated April 4, before it goes on hiatus.

The Boxscore chart ranks the top-grossing concerts as reported by promoters, venues, managers and booking agents.

Dance Club Songs ranks the week's most popular songs played in dance clubs, compiled from reports submitted by a national sample of club DJs.

Both charts are scheduled to update again on a weekly basis on a date to be determined.

Billboard, meanwhile, will continue to provide complete coverage of both the touring and dance spaces, including the many performances that artists are livestreaming from, among other locations, their homes.

Plus, the Hot Dance/Electronic Songs, Dance/Electronic Streaming Songs, Dance/Electronic Digital Song Sales, Dance/Mix Show Airplay and Top Dance/Electronic Albums charts will continue to update weekly.

                Catalog Albums/Billboard 200 Chart Update – April 4, 2020

                Kenny Rogers: 1938-2020

Kenny Rogers had already had a lengthy career behind him when he became a huge force in country music, with plenty of cross-over success onto the pop charts, in the late 1970s and much of the 1980s. He passed away at age 81 in Georgia on March 20. With the exception of Once Upon A Christmas, a perennially-charting Christmas album with Dolly Parton, Rogers has never had much presence on the general Catalog charts, reaching the charts with only four other albums and none since With Love in 2010. A 1993 hits album, Daytime Friends: The Very Best Of Kenny Rogers, is a new entry and the top-selling catalog album of the week, ranking #23 on Top Album Sales, but only #190 on the Billboard 200. Another collection, 1990’s Greatest Country Hits, is also a new entry at #17 in the catalog sales ranking (#78 Top Album Sales), without reaching the BB200.

This isn’t to say that there was no chart recognition in honor of Rogers’ notable career, as he did reach the top 10 on both the Billboard 200 and album sales charts this week. The Best Of Kenny Rogers: Through The Years was the top Rogers entry, coming in at #5 Album Sales and #9 BB200 in its first week on both charts. This was a 2018 release, and apparently is just short of the number of weeks of release to qualify for Catalog status, otherwise it would easily have been the #1 Catalog chart album and also the top catalog seller. On that technicality, then, Queen’s Greatest Hits holds for a ninth straight week at #1 (and 40th week overall) on the Catalog chart.

                MIG’S MILESTONES
                J. Cole, 2014 Forest Hills Drive – #25 Cat, #128 BB200 – Reaches 150 weeks on the BB200 as a catalog-status album.
Blake Shelton, Reloaded: 20 #1 Hits – #183 BB200 – Makes it to 100 weeks on the BB200 in catalog status.
Imagine Dragons, Evolve – #20 Cat, #116 BB200 – This is week number 50 in catalog status on the BB200.
Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band, Greatest Hits – #184 BB200, #16 CS – This mid-1990s release is now at 600 weeks in the top 200 albums overall.(*)
Zac Brown Band, Greatest Hits So Far… – #30 Cat, #137 BB200 – Week #250 on the BB200 overall for this album. It’s closing in on the 289 week total for their debut album, The Foundation.
Daryl Hall & John Oates, The Very Best Of Daryl Hall & John Oates – #50 Cat, #170 BB200 – Reaches 50 weeks on the Catalog chart.
The Beatles, Abbey Road – Has been in the top 10 of catalog album sellers for over half a year now; it reaches 27 straight weeks this week.
(*) = Total includes Comprehensive chart weeks from late 2003 – late 2009.

                NEW ON THE CHARTS
Kenny Rogers, Daytime Friends: The Very Best Of Kenny Rogers – #190 BB200, #1 CS – Best entry for the late country star that is truly in Catalog status. This was a 1993 release.
Kenny Rogers, Greatest Country Hits – #17 CS – Another debut from Kenny, this one from 1990, charting only on Top Album Sales this week.

WANDERING STARS – Reserved for long-absent albums returning to the charts:
George Strait, 50 Number Ones – #17 Cat, #110 BB200 – Hits album from country superstar Strait is on the BB200 for the seventh time this year, but makes the Catalog chart for the first time in 2020.
Dolly Parton, Ultimate Dolly Parton - #19 Cat, #115 BB200 – First appearance on the Catalog chart and BB200 this year for this album, which first charted as a catalog album last year. Its return is no doubt due to Kenny Rogers’ passing, as he is featured on a few songs.
Lionel Richie, The Definitive Collection – #22 CS – First appearance in catalog sales of 2020 for this collection.

ERRATAJordan Davis’ Home State was listed as a catalog album on the BB200 for the last three weeks, but should not have been. This week it rises into what would have been Catalog chart territory, but is not listed there, so I have concluded it is still current.

CATALOG NOTES – Parenthetical numbers are weeks in the top 10 followed by 2020 weeks in the top 10:
On Catalog Sales/TAS: With the number one debut of Daytime Friends: The Very Best Of Kenny Rogers, one album is squeezed out of the top 10: Nirvana’s MTV Unplugged In New York, dropping 9-15… Kendrick Lamar’s good kid, m.A.A.d city abruptly drops from Album Sales after a #12 catalog sales ranking last week… Prince & The Revolution’s Purple Rain (Soundtrack) leaves the chart after 18 straight weeks listed, while ABBA’s Gold – Greatest Hits ends a 12-week run.
On Catalog/BB200: The top 10 on the Catalog chart remain the same 10 albums, with three albums making it to 13 straight weeks in the top 10: Queen’s Greatest Hits, Creedence Clearwater Revival’s Chronicle, and Cardi B’s Invasion Of Privacy... The Weeknd’s Starboy and Beauty Behind The Madness rise four spots each to #5 and #6 Catalog, respectively, as the artist’s new album After Hours becomes 2020’s biggest-unit #1 to date… Adele’s 21 leaves the Catalog chart after a 12 week run… A few longer runs end on the BB200, including Metallica’s Metallica (26 weeks), Lana Del Rey’s Born To Die (17 weeks) and Eminem’s Curtain Call: The Hits (16 weeks).

TOP CATALOG ALBUMS WITH NO TOP 10 WEEKS IN 2020 / NO TOP 10 WEEKS EVER – Numbers in parentheses are overall chart weeks, overall top 10 weeks, weeks on chart in 2020, overall peak position, 2020 peak position, current position. If the top album with no 2020 top 10 weeks is the same as the album with no top 10 weeks overall, only one is shown:
Catalog Sales: Neil Diamond, All-Time Greatest Hits (122/16/4/#1/#12/#12)
Kenny Rogers, Greatest Country Hits (1/0/1/#17/#17/#17)
Catalog: Billy Joel, The Essential Billy Joel (120/16/12/#1/#12/#12)
Dolly Parton, Ultimate Dolly Parton (2/0/1/#19/#19/#19)

On that technicality, then, Queen’s Greatest Hits holds for a ninth straight week at #1 (and 40th week overall) on the Catalog chart.
I think Billboard have this wrong - the album was released September 21, 2018, and has finally charted this week on it's 80th week of release. They've made the correct call on the sales based charts, as it's not listed on the Top Current Albums chart.

U.S. Digital Album Sales Hit 7-Month High
                          4/2/2020 by Keith Caulfield

After overall U.S. album sales bottomed out to their worst week on record a week ago, the music industry has some good news. Total album sales volume increased in the latest tracking week, while digital album sales hit a seven-month high.
In the week ending March 26, total U.S. album sales grew 2.3% to 1.558 million copies sold across all formats (CD, digital album download, vinyl LP, cassette, etc.), according to Nielsen Music/MRC Data. That’s up from the record low of 1.523 million in the week ending March 19. (Still, the 1.558 million represents the second-worst week for album sales since Nielsen Music/MRC Data began tracking sales in 1991.)

Digital Album Sales Hit Seven-Month High: Meanwhile, digital album sales vault 49.1% to 811,000 sold in the week ending March 26 — the biggest week for digital albums in seven months. The last bigger week for the format was the week ending Sept. 5, 2019, when 856,000 digital albums were sold.

Both overall album sales and digital album sales were boosted by the arrival of The Weeknd’s After Hours, which was released on March 20 and splashed in with 275,000 in sales in the week ending March 26 (with 167,000 of that figure in downloads, while the rest were CD sales). The album’s sizable sales start was goosed by sales generated from a concert ticket/CD album sale redemption offer, along with over 80 merchandise/digital album bundles sold via The Weeknd’s website.

Physical Album Sales Fall Again: Physical album sales (CD, vinyl LP, cassette, etc.) declined 23.7% in the week ending March 26 to a new low of 747,000 copies sold – down from the previous record-low, set just a week previous, with 979,000.

Overall album sales continue to be impacted by coronavirus concerns – with most states under stay-at-home orders, and many indie brick-and-mortar record stores temporarily closed (for in-store business, at least), along with big mass merchant stores likely focused on merchandising non-music products in these uncertain times. Further, consumers in general are likely focused on other matters outside of music, and perhaps choosing to be more selective with how they spend money.

Download Sales of Older Albums Surge: We can break down the overall digital album sales gain further, by isolating just sales of older albums – referred to as “catalog albums.” Digital catalog album sales jumped 18.8% in the week ending March 26 – rising to 389,000 sold. That’s the biggest week for digital catalog album sales in 2020, and the biggest week for the category outside of the always-busy Christmas shopping season, since the week ending Oct. 3, 2019 (410,000 sold).

However, a chunk of the digital catalog album sales gain can be attributed to the late Kenny Rogers, who sold 17,000 digital albums in the week ending March 26 — all from catalog albums. Without those 17,000 in sales, digital catalog album sales would have totaled 373,000 — the sixth-largest sales week of 2020 for digital catalog album sales.

On the Horizon: While The Weeknd’s After Hours and Kenny Rogers’ albums sent sales surging in the week ending March 26, there are a number of albums on the horizon that could also post significant sales figures.

On March 27, a trio of big acts dropped albums that are sure to sell in decent quantities, including 5 Seconds of Summer’s Calm (which will benefit from a ticket/album bundle as well as many merchandise/bundles), Pearl Jam’s Gigaton and Dua Lipa’s Future Nostalgia. On April 3, there’s Sam Hunt’s Southside and All-Time Low’s Wake Up, Sunshine. On April 10, The Strokes are due to issue The New Abnormal, while on April 24, Luke Bryan is scheduled to release Born Here Live Here Die Here. Some albums that were supposed to arrive in March and April, including Alicia Keys’ Alicia, Lady Gaga’s Chromatica and The 1975’s Notes on a Conditional Form, have been delayed to dates after May 1.

1.58 million copies sold this past week; 1.52 million (all-time low) set this past week (March 19). Back in 2010, Billboard reported the first instance the top 200 dipped below 5 million! That’s a 70% reduction in pure album sales in the course of a decade.
