  • Irish Singles Charts 1967

    Previously part of the Irish Singles Charts 1967-1969 thread, this is an amended and more complete look at the singles charts from 1967. All but 8 of the Top Thirty charts are complete and only 1 of the Top 20 is incomplete.

    Contributions in the original thread mainly from Beatlened, smiffj and CZB.

    I'll incorporate any notes from the original thread if they're still relevant.

    The original thread used the dates from Spotlight Magazine as they were the chart compilers. Spotlight's cover dates were at least a week ahead of when the magazine hit the streets. We are fortunate that the Evening Echo printed most of the Top 30 charts. Charts were also printed in the Drogheda Independent, Evening Press and Evening Herald.

    At the start of the year there was no chart show on RTE. These charts had been dropped in December.
    This was not an unpopular move within the Irish music industry as the RTE charts had long been viewed as plagued with irregularities.

    RTE introduced a "Ten Of The Best" show on 2nd January. Described as "similar in content and presentation to the Irish Top Ten, but it will not be based on statistics". Larry Gogan's book of the Irish charts used this for a few weeks. This was not based on sales but was in the opinion of the radio station the most popular records. I don't have these top tens but wouldn't used them if I had. It's unfortunate that the official Irish charts website uses the data taken from those charts.

    Eddie Kelly used the Spotlight charts in his book. By the end of February even RTE had adopted the Spotlight chart.

    A rival magazine "Top Ten" had begun compiling a chart in February 1967. The charts were compiled from a sales only from a pool of 50 record shops throughout the country. These were the "official charts of the Irish record Industry". RTE and Larry Gogan's book uses some of these charts. Top Ten actually printed a Top 15 (Top Ten, plus the Next Five) as well as unnumbered records listed as "Coming Up". Larry changed from Spotlight to using the Top 15 from this magazine for 3 weeks before Spotlight and Top Ten amalgamated. RTE's chart show was a mess. In all there were 13 of the "official" charts published. It's a pity that they appear to have lost their official status since the first publication of Larry Gogan's chat book in the 1970s. These charts are published after the New Spotlight charts in this thread.

    In May Spotlight and Top Ten amalgamated to produce one magazine and one chart. These charts continued to be used as the official charts (with a couple of changes of compiler) until late 1975. After that Spotlight continued to publish their sales charts but RTE went a different route. The strange chart compilation method applied by the National Broadcaster then has also been adopted as the official chart for the period in question. Those charts can be found here 1976-1978.

    Chart books available from Eddie Kelly (the Complete Guide to Ireland's Top Ten Hits) and Larry Gogan (The Larry Gogan Book of Irish Chart Hits). These used different dates and only feature the Top Ten and Top Twenty respectively for 1967.

    I've listed all of the dates and numbered each chart week, week 1, week 2 etc.

    The last week positions as featured in the Evening Echo weren't correct. Two records showed last week positions at #4, 2 at #14 and another 2 at #16. As there were also records at numbers 5, 15 and 17 these couldn't have been right. The last week positions here are from the previous published New Spotlight chart, as featured in the Evening Echo on 26 December 1966. The Top 20 only was published in the Evening Echo but of the #29 LW position for The Alamo is correct then a Top 30 must have been compiled and probably published elsewhere. Some of those marked as "New" may also have been in that Top 30. Those records marked as "-re-" may have been in that Top 30 but had been in the chart published the week before.

    The Top Ten is taken from Billboard magazine, the only source I can find, which differs from the Top 10 in the Evening Echo "last week" positions on 23 January 1967. Eddie Kelly for some reason did not use this Top 10 as listed in Billboard. The date above is that of the equivalent week in his books. Most chart positions taken from the Evening Echo's last week positions on 23 January which were again less than accurate. There are 2 #15s, 2#18s, 2 #19s, and 2 #26s. The records of Small Faces, Roy Orbison, The Troggs, Manfred Mann, Georgie Fame and The Barron-Knights all achieve their highest 1967 positions based on the "last week" information supplied so may not be correct. The numbers in brackets after the titles are those attributed to this chart under that "last week" column in the Evening Echo. Muirsheen Durkin and Save Me are both credited with a week in the Top 10 here by Eddie Kelly. Only 29 positions identified after all that.

    It's likely that the Radio Eireann started using the New Spotlight chart from this week as the entry dates for #13, #16 and #18 in Larry Gogan's book are 20 February 1967; This would indicate that the Top Twenty was adopted for the first time by RTE; Petula Clark is listed as entering the week before in Larry's book and this must have been in whatever chart was used by them up to now.

                    TOP TEN MAGAZINE

                    The 13 charts from Top Ten Magazine before its amalgamation with New Spotlight. The Official Charts of the Irish record industry

                    These correspond to weeks 7 - 19 of the New Spotlight chart.

                    All but the first 2 were also published in the Evening Herald.

                    The charts were published as a Top 10. Positions 11-15 were published as the Next 5 and numbered.

                    A selection of records on the move below the top 15 was also published but not numbered. This ranged from a low of 3 to a high of 7 records. I've numbered them in the order that they were listed.

                    The charts for weeks 17-19 are used by Radio Eireann and in Larry Gogan's book of Irish Chart Hits.

                    The Evening Herald chart had the same records in positions 1-11
                    12 was the Troggs, 13 The Tremeloes, 14 The Royal Guardsmen and 15 Joe Dolan
                    However the last week positions in the Herald 5th April 1967 chart match those in the Top Ten version
                    The Top Ten magazine version must therefore have been a corrected version of the one published earlier in the Herald
                    The records listed as "Coming up" were also different in both publications.

                        I've been reviewing this 1967 thread today - again very little to mention. It becomes ever clearer that "near enough's good enough" seemed to be the approach as far as several of the artist billings (and indeed some of the song titles) were concerned in Larry's book - it's great to have the corrected versions, as well as such nearly-complete data compared with what we had originally.

                        Just two or three typos I noticed this time:

                        - in week 8 Joe Dolan is shown as last week 01, should be last week 02;

                        - in week 25 "Finchley Central" should be a re-entry, it had first appeared two/three weeks earlier;

                        - in week 1 there are two hits showing last week 14 - but this could have been a misprint in the publications, or maybe they had been tied at that position.

                        Counting down this week - the UKMixParade Top 200 of 2019

                          Typos amended. Cheers.

                          The "last week" positions in week 1 are a bit of a mess. I don't have much faith in them. Two records showed last week positions at #4, 2 at #14 and another 2 at #16. As there were also records at numbers 5, 15 and 17 these couldn't have been right. I believe that they refer back to the previous New Spotlight chart from 2 weeks before. Some of the positions do and some look like typos. I've only got a Top 20 for that so I'll amend to match that.

                          Week 2 is also assembled from the "last week" column in the Evening Echo on 23 January. This also shows positions which can't be right. There are 2 #15s, 2#18s, 2 #19s, and 2 #26s. I had taken this as the best source because it seemed to match the data that Eddie Kelly had in his books. Almost! In doing so I disregarded the Top 10 published in Billboard because it had no bearing on what Eddie Kelly had published. I now think that I shouldn't have. The charts either side of that one in Billboard were correct. Billboard states the Top 10 is provided by New Spotlight. I'm going to change the Top 10 in week 2 to match and assemble the rest of the chart using those fanciful "last week" positions. It's not ideal obviously.

                          For this period, starting in December 1966 RTE had abandoned the Top 10 chart so Larry Gogan's book can't help. The information in that book is based on their "Ten of the best" popular records played instead of the usual chart.
