  • Engelbert won't go top ten again and he will only make the top twenty twice more. Tom will have to wait till the end of 1971 for another top ten hit and Cliff 1973 so yeah the old guard are indeed struggling.

Many ballads will continue to chart however, some good and some awful. By the end of 1970 though the wind of change will shape the chart with the birth of glam rock.

          • On the 3rd October chart, it looks like you neglected to put a score for The Marmalade track Rainbow (no.24 in MM) which would have been 1750 points placing them at 28 and shifting the other tracks down.

            • Ah ! I see what has gone wrong there. For some reason that row didn't have a calculation formula in it so therefore didn't follow through with a point allocation. I have corrected that and will amend 3rd October and subsequent chart positions on the 10th. Well spotted brain and thanks as I like 100% accuracy in all calculations.

              Both weeks now amended.

              • I never thought I would understand the elementary errors Tony Jasper made in his Top Twenty book but I now realise first hand how easy it is to mispresent numbers when you are dealing with so many of them in front of you. There comes a point on a spreadsheet they kinda just merge on the screen and even with checks afterwards you sometimes can't see what is in front of your eyes, the old can't see the woods for the trees saying.

You guys fresh eyes can therefore pick up what I sometimes can't see in front of me. So keep up the good work I really do appreciate your picking up on the odd number that slips through the net to keep The Ultimate Average Chart error free.

I acquired this track when I bought a Vileda mop, on a free cassette called 'Bop While You Mop'.

I had to look up what a Vileda mop was (apart from knowing it would be a mop!).

Is this the cassette you got for free? https://www.discogs.com/Various-Bop-...elease/5617449

                            • Aside from those I mentioned a few posts back there are some absolute gems on this week's chart that I bought at the time, Freda Payne, Deep Purple, Carpenters, Black Sabbath, Tremeloes, Clarence Carter, Matthew's Southern Comfort, Diana Ross, Desmond Dekker, Temptations, and that's just the ones from the top ten.

                              What a year !

Yes. I phoned them for a widget replacement and they said they would be happy to post one to me, and it arrived with the cassette.

                                • Interesting random selection of tracks on that cassette!

Was the James Brown track the first hit to contain the word "sex" in the title? I can't think of an earlier one. Can't imagine it got a lot of airplay....

I was thinking that too. But it is not on the banned list.

                                • The Don Fardon (from England actually) record would probably be banned these days for having so much false information. For a start the Cherokee were never on reservations! Cherokee people have never lived in tipis, nor do they use the term "papoose". And finally singing that they may some day "return" is at odds with fact that these Cherokee Nations still exist.

I lived for a long time in the belief that Matthews Southern Comfort was the name of brand of whiskey and was based on that! But It is based on Ian Matthew (Fairport Convention) and "Southern Comfort" by the Canadian folk duo Ian and Sylvia, Matthews favourite record.
Southern Comfort, however is an American fruit-flavored whiskey liqueur with fruit and spice accents. The brand was originally created by bartender Martin Wilkes Heron in New Orleans in 1874, and originally used whiskey as the base spirit.
Your guess is as good as mine if either Ian Matthews or Ian and Sylvia were fond of the drink!
Education for anyone aged 12 to 16 has made a mess of the world!

I'm not sure about the BBC but I do remember Radio Luxembourg playing it in their chart show.

As it never made the BMRB Top 30, I suppose the BBC could just ignore it without offIcially banning it.

Not really although Deep Purple had been top for two weeks before that chart date, it fell from 1 to 8 that week, though the following week climb is unexplained as it went down to 13. For that to happen twice it was clearly getting no coverage on TV and records above were!
I suspect that it's presence at number one on the other charts is down to the reduced number of shops (with both down to 100) taking part and both papers were turning into or had turned into "Rock" papers by this time.

The White Plains track is credited to featuring Pete Nelson. Though even on compilation albums today he's not credited. Another version by Bobby Sherman was lagging behind the record by a good distance. It stalled at 42.
Just to show you how bad all three charts were at this time, the Move single "When Alice Comes Back To The Farm" was already at 20 and would reach number 11, without a single chart appearance in the others or even being a breaker. It even got a Top of The Pops appearance! It wasn't that they were some new group either!

The previous week the Beatles single Let It Be had made the BMRB top 50 again for a week. I couldn't find any reason this would return, no TV slots etc. It wasn't in the top 100 that week, though it did come back in this week at 83 lasting two more weeks, simply on the basis it was displayed in top 50 record shops the following week.
Education for anyone aged 12 to 16 has made a mess of the world!

The Let It Be and Abbey Road albums were still in the Top 40 album chart at this date. Probably motivated some to buy the single. Perhaps it was played on Two Way Family Favourites.
