I suppose it wouldn't be logical to keep calling them 'The Motown Spinners' when they were on Atlantic - probably neither record company would approve!

Maybe the name 'Detroit Spinners' was chosen because The Detroit Emeralds were also having hits here around this time.

That makes sense. Though they were from Detroit so the change to that would have been more logical.
However looking at the discography of the band it seems they fluctuated back and forth between the names, even when the record was put out by Motown UK. From 1961 to 1965 they were just called the Spinners - even in the UK. They put out two record in 1967 and one in 1965 under the name Detroit Spinners, then in 1970 and 1971 they put out the two records on Motown as the Motown Spinners. The first record on Atlantic in 1972 they went back to The Spinners. All the rest of the releases were under Detroit Spinners.

So it looks like it was all to the fact that the record companies couldn't make up the minds what to call them till 1973! They were all in a spin

Technically it could be either really. I went for new as it had left the chart for some time and it was its first chart appearance in 1970. But yeah I get it could be a re entry also.

My Way never left the chart. By the end of 1970 it had amassed 91 weeks in the chart and sold over a million copies in 1970 alone! It continued into 1971 and probably was still in the top 100 in 1972. I would have tracked longer in 1971, but I made an error in the size of the weeks column which only allowed for two numbers not three. So I stopped at 100 weeks. Otherwise I would have had to spent ages resetting all the columns and moving them to accommodate the three figure weeks column. I will still have to do that when I eventually get to that week!

By the way the last BMRB chart of the year does have some faults in it. Frankie for instance drops down to 50 for no reason at all, he was at 23 on the Real Chart, that week.
There's no record of Clive Dunn appearing on TV singing that song till he reaches 17 in the BMRB chart. He then gets on TOTP to perform and there's other appearances that same week. That sends him to the runner up spot eventually, 6,000 records short of being the Christmas chart topper. Though he does spend a week at the top in the New Year.

Yeah I Believe achieved its 18 week run at #1 in three blocks 9, 6, and 3 weeks, allowing Eddie Fisher and Mantovani to snatch a week each.

I think Guy Mitchell's Singing The Blues had the same fate. I remember reading that Philips couldn't keep up with the demand and that's what allowed Tommy Steele's version to have a week at the top before guy returned there.

The dealers’ charts from RM extending the official RM chart of the 50ies will not only make it possible to construct a more reliable and prolonged chart, but can also mean an impact on the average chart of these years. Do you happen to know when BL will reopen?

They are open Kjell but reduced hours and by appointment only. I'm waiting for normal service.

But, another week or so and the 'fun' Ultimate Chart will finish in March 1971. The main purpose here remember was to highlight all the charts for this period side by side to compare how the sales chart looked in comparison to the points charts and displaying a fun average as a sideline.

The serious next phase Ultimate Averaged Chart will be posted in a week commencing on October 1955 through December 1959. NME and RM till April 1956 when MM joins and then Disc from February 1958.

I know you are looking forward to this period and hope all my other regular followers are too, to witness the birth and progress of the rock'n'roll era.

More likely that the shops were too busy to fill in the logs or the Post Office were too busy to get the chart returns in on time. It was Christmas and the Post Office would have that much mail that they just couldn't meet the chart deadlines. I think the later since none of the records fell that much sales wise. Perhaps it was the case that Mr Tibbs was right for once and BMRB got 175 returns and not 300

The diversity in music at this time is exemplified in this last chart of the year. Something for everyone, rock, soul, old fashioned ballads, Northern Soul, sing-a-long, even a religious hymn. We can't say that about now, can we ?

Whilst I enjoy looking at other charts I've never really rated Top Pops as a main player in the charts field. It only sampled around 12 stores and all W. H. Smith branches. As a result it often came up with even stranger chart movements than the often maligned RR chart. You have mentioned a few in the other thread relating to this. But like I say it is an interesting minor chart just the same for a chart freak like me lol.

I find it interesting that in its last few months, from Band Of Gold on, Top Pops had the same number one each week as MM during what was not a period of general concensus in chartdom!

I never knew 'When I'm Dead And Gone' was a MM as well as a NME number 1. So the UAC number 1 differs to the BMRB. I don't think I knew of the McGuinness Flint single until the mid 1970s and remember being a bit underwhelmed by it. When I found out it had been a (RR/MW) number 2 hit I was quite surprised. The chorus is decent but the verses are a bit bland. And it's the UAC Christmas Number One for 1970 - not very festive!
