Wikipedia has 5 acts beating Acker's 45 consecutive weeks in the Top 40, but the earliest of these is in 2013. He is the only one with uninterrupted longevity from the era of high record sales.
It is when you open it up to non-consecutive weeks that My Way does well, particularly as a non-Christmas recurrent.

I've just finished compiling August 4th 1962 and 'Stranger' is still Top 20 on its 36th consecutive week there equalling Frankie Laine's record of 36 weeks in the Top 12 back in 1953 with I Believe, but it looks likely 'Stranger' will drop out next week. That said though Acker did it with lots more competition around.
A lot has since been made of Sinatra's My Way record beating longevity but most of that was spent hovering around the lower reaches of the Top 50. He never came anywhere close to 36 weeks in the Top 20 though.
I can't think off the top of my head though if anyone since Acker has spent 36 consecutive weeks in the Top 20 and is he still the last to hold that record, or does anyone know better ?

Wikipedia says 'Stranger on the shore' was released in October, although provides no source. The TV series started on 24th September https://genome.ch.bbc.co.uk/81def5f2...9d62fb18db9037 so this is possible. On the other hand it is also possible that with the TV exposure demand could have built up sufficiently for it to reach the charts on 2 days sales.
The description of number one as 'pole position' reminds me of the Big L Top 40 show when Tony Windsor would say: "We start with the record at our anchor position."
Mrs Mills first appearance this week, in the good old British pub-type pianist tradition of Winifred Atwell and Russ Conway.

^ Off-topic really but some fascinating stats there! I was vaguely aware of this record having had a significant stranglehold in the Danish charts for a long time in the '00s but wasn't cognisant of just how long that was, albeit of course down in part to the steep decline in physical CD sales and digital downloads being yet to be counted in their official chart.
Back to the Sixties (sorry didn't mean to make a naff eighties Tight Fit reference there!) - I have a completed list of the known/believed official million-selling singles in the UK on paid-for sales which includes various pieces of key information about each single. I say "complete" as it's not quite there for a few entries - I always include the original release date, which I've not managed to pin down for 'Stranger On The Shore' (which according to OCC's Feb '20 update was the 95th biggest-seller at around 1.19m). As it first appears in charts week-ending Sat 2 Dec '61 I have assumed it was Nov. As its maiden appearance on the UAC works out as high as No 18, can I safely assume that its release date was Fri 24 Nov '61 as its first two days of sales would've been sufficient to land it at such a high combined position first week?
Thanks.

A contender for the longest run at #1 in any national chart would be Trine Dyrholm, a Danish singer/songwriter/actress, and the song "Avenuen" (Mr. Nice Guy EP) which entered the Danish Top 20 in December 2004. The first half of 2005 it was in and out of the Top 20, but during the second half of 2005 it started to progress, and on Sept. 9th 2005 it reached the pole position for the first time.
The longest span (of 11 occasions) at # 1 was 18 weeks in late 2006 and the beginning of 2007. When the Danish charts officially began to include downloads by November 2007 its days were counted. But in the span of almost three years it spent 62 non-consecutive weeks at #1, a total of 135 weeks in the Top 20, and 151 weeks in the not openly published Top 50.
This was a time when singles sales were very low and beta charts including downloads from 2006-2007 tells a different story. According to those charts it notched up 41 weeks of which 6 weeks were spent at # 1. Last appearance in this chart was Jan. 19th 2007.

I couldn't say about the longest at the top for a world record. I did a Google search and all you get is UK and USA number ones, expanded it to World and it turns into Tennis results. Even the Guinness World records site has no results, except the UK and USA ones.

The Springfield's were soon to become the first British group to make the Billboard Top 20 with 'Silver threads and golden needles' which appears to have flopped in the UK.

Having just posted this post, I find that my last statement to be incorrect, as the comment option does appear on my own posts. This means that you could add a comment to somebody else's comment, you just need to add something like: "re:name" to the comment as it won't let you quote directly. If you can't comment and you are allowed, then contact UKMIX and report a fault.

Until Acker Bilk, Frankie Laine held the record for consecutive week chart residency, 36 weeks for I Believe in 1953, Only NME of course compiled a record chart at that time and it was only a Top 12 with much less competition.
Still to date, I Believe is the all time record holder for weeks at the top of the singles chart. 18 weeks. A few have got within striking distance but fell at the last hurdle. It was in 3 runs at the top though, 9 weeks, 6 weeks, and 3 weeks.
