Yes! It was a National chart! It was compiled in 1968 by Colin Bostock Smith from about a Dozen branches of WH Smith & sons record section! By 1970 the Music Now chart as it was re-titled expanded to around 50 branches of `Smith's. Now compiled by Tony Norman and Karen De Groot! Not a major chart-but certainly of some interest! It is by far-the toughest chart to research due to the rarity of the papers!
I think Alan also posted somewhere that the WHS&S stores being sampled were their 'largest' stores. I have no concept of how large WHS&S stores were. Were they huge, medium, or small?
So yes, while TP/MN was not a major chart compared to the others of the day, at their peak they were sampling as many shops as the other charts were in the 50s, and RR up to 1964. One could argue at their peak they were relatively more important than RR was prior to 1964. I consider them worthy of study. The more the merrier !! Rock on...
