The Temptations did make up for it many years later after the film of the same name.
But I think a lot of the problem was down to the BBC and their attitude to pop music on the radio and TV. It was very hard to get a lot of these songs played on Radio and TV. A lot of the one's you mention were black singers and groups. And unless they were in the top thirty it was just about impossible to get a spot on TV or radio with some of these acts. One mention of black magic and spells would see a ban from the religious censor at the BEEB. And political protest songs were out too.
The pirates did help. Radio London not playing a sales top 40. Though since some of records were not actually for sale and by the time of issue, were not playlisted anymore by the station, didn't help. I can tell you that since the pirates ended while I have been doing the 1967 charts afterwards the stopped, that newer records struggle to sell. And when Disc joins with Melody Maker, the 250 strong chart slows it's pace right down. Sometimes with less new hits than NME, which seems to become the better chart.

At the end of the day I wish I could tell you that The Real Chart had all the list of records selling much better than the other charts. But with one or two exceptions I can't. For the simple reason that again with the odd exception, that records in the top 50's were selling in all the other record shops because the public saw these top 50 charts and would buy the records in them. Even if the record companies made certain they got in. In some cases the record company was fiddling a record that in the rest of the country was selling well. Just not that well in these 250 shops, perhaps because the record companies were targeting these shops too much!

In conclusion anyone who thinks that records missed out (regularly) due to these charts at the time would be wrong. Though the odd one would slip through the net created by these charts and sell much better than any chart showed.
The only ones not showing up of course are the Embassy (Woolworth's) records. But the store switched to the big labels in 1965.
The only way you can tell if these records were big sellers is by looking through the racks of old records in second-hand stores and see them cropping up with all the other big hits of the times. Or the most collected ones on 45Cat etc.

Before I move on to 1966 later today, here's the ones I think should have happened in '65 and were criminally ignored. Ouch !

Barbara Lewis - Make Me Your Baby
    Etta James - At Last
The Ian Campbell Folk Group - The Times They Are A-Changin' - Soooo much better than Dylan's
The Impressions - People Get Ready
Martha Smith - As I Watch You Walk Away
Nina Simone - I Put A Spell On You
    The Temptations - My Girl
Peter and Gordon - I Go To Pieces
The Ronettes - Is This What I Get For Loving You
The Supremes - Back In My Arms Again
    Sue Thompson - Paper Tiger

How did we let those miss !!!!!

The Tony Bennet track was around the 100 for weeks. Even Disc's top 100. It even cropped up again in 1967! Being marketed again by the record company. The fact that it didn't get near to the top ten in the charts and spent less time in the Record Retailer chart, hides the fact that it was massive seller in the UK.

Yeah thats true. It was just a case of forgetting to change that back to 19 from 15 once I had calculated the average so it doesn't alter the outcome of the chart, but I like complete accuracy so thanks for picking up on that Woz

NME and Disc always seem to be ahead of the other two charts on New Entries, probably because of their policy of including advance orders and as mentioned above by Graham RR always seems to be the last chart that existing hits leave. No doubt about it as so many of you have pointed out before RR is by far the weakest chart.

I did a little more digging and discovered that the Yardbirds AA was issued on 1st October and if you look at the other charts they have in for those two days of sales. But RR doesn't pick it up for the following week. However the 22 entry position is not for the week ending date, but Record Mirror's Thursday date of publication of the 14 October. I'm not certain what date RR came out. The same date is also given in publications of the Hit Singles books and is still used today on the Official Chart. This might fit in with the current dating system of charts, but this was a recent innovation, designed not to give only two days of sales for new entries. If the same system had been in place back in 1965 new hits would have entered the RR chart HIGHER than they do. Since they would have a full six days of sales (no Sunday selling back then).
It's another bizarre oddity in Record Retailer life.

I believe the only way you can look at how Record Retailer worked in practice is that it wasn't using all 85 shops to produce the chart. Alan Smith says that the chart was compiled by one man. And given that he had a day less to produce a chart than the other charts, had less time to do it in. To get around this problem he must have cut the number of shops he actually used to a VERY low level. Plus the postal system would also limit the number. The British Market Research Bureau had the same problem with the post in the 70's and onwards, cutting shop returns down. The less shops used would limit the sales level. It will show up with new hits especially. At that time records were issued on Friday, giving only two days of sales in the first week. However the stores can shift a lot on Saturday alone. If you take the Stones - Cloud record. It was issued on the 22 October. But the week ending date is misleading since it looks like the Stones had 8 days of sales, or at least seven! When in fact the sales period of the Chart for the week ending 30 October was actually the 18 to 23 October! The Stones track itself would have had a lot of orders meaning the record shops would have lots of copies to sell on the 22 and 23 October. The more shops you sample the more sales you will get. Cut down the number of shops and have more smaller stores taking part and you reduce the impact of new sellers. Many of the big stores that would have taken more orders and got the lion's share didn't take part and probably refused to do so in these charts.
It's interesting to note that the Real Chart for the 24 October, covering the same seven days, has the Stones top on 159,000. And Ken on 145,000. A gap of only 14,000 copies.

My conclusion is that Record Retailer was probably only using 25 stores to compile it's chart each week out of the 85, while the others were using 50+ depending on how many stores were sending in information.
