You are not combining Nancy's - You Only Live Twice and Nancy and Lee's - Jackson on the NME chart? It's just a double A side, not two separate records. In the end it's just a flaw in NME's compilation, with some retailers putting down the Bond Theme and some putting down Jackson. It's unlikely that any shop put them both down in the top 50. Unless the person filling in the chart return was a bit thick?
I thought you had a way of putting them together without giving the record to greater shove up the chart?

It's a shame the record company didn't release both sides as separate singles. As this split clearly stopped the Bond Theme reaching the top ten. Even the Real Chart only had it at 12 though it stayed 23 weeks selling nearly 700K.

Some of the Pirate Radio stations clearly hated the Bond Theme, especially Radio London. Who always listed Jackson in it's made up top 40. But I think it's much better than Jackson! I suspect if the Record Company had known that the "Theme" would get some stick from the Pirates, they would have issued it separate.

Joe Brown reached 34 with his version at this time in 1967. The biggest hit for it would come a year later for Joe Cocker, of course the last big hitter on the 45 market was Wet Wet Wet.
John Barry's theme to You Only Live Twice did sell, but reached only reached 51.

    RR almost back to 'normal'.

A song that hadn't charted when originally released by its co-writer Lonnie Donegan now makes it with Tom Jones.

In 1967 the Beach Boys recorded With A Little Help From My Friends but it was not released until 1983. The Seekers contemporary recording of This Is My Song was not released until 1995!

Sales figures from The Real Chart.
300,000 copies ordered. For at least 8,000 shops. That's 37 in each shop!
I can imagine some manager on the phone, "what's the idea sending me 25 copies of the Beatles!"

The actual sale of the Beatles that week was 210,000 of course going straight in at the top.
Fascinating! Where did you get that information from? What is your source??

A large store might for example run out of stock
Unlikely, after 2 days. They would have sufficient records in stock knowing it was by the Beatles (and it had been featured in the worldwide TV program). With 300,000 advance orders there would have been plenty of records in all stores, assuming a good EMI distribution system.

It is more likely that both NME and DISC had discontinued their advance orders policy. But we will see the situation in December 1967 (and how an EP got into the singles chart).

The advance orders were 300,000 by the day of release.
The Beatles track was released on Friday of the chart week, two days of sales. Advanced orders would have shown up the week before, making the single enter before it was released.
Both NME and Disc only got a return of the most popular 50 record that a shop was saying it was selling. This is why some of them added albums to the list, but some stuck to the concept of 45rpm only. Depending on how the dealer filled in the form a record could have placed at 49 on one list and 1 on another. Though in both stores that record sold the most in both stores. A large store might for example run out of stock and place the record at 20. But the actual numbers of copies sold in that store might have outsold any number one in four other stores that were smaller.
The actual sale of the Beatles that week was 210,000 of course going straight in at the top.
Generally a point system works, giving reasonably correct positions for some records, but it has two problems. One is distribution. Stores will say a record is selling well, but actually they don't have enough copies to maintain the positions that a points system will give the record. For example a record at 30 going down might be in actual sales 49. Second is store size. As above a large store can shift more copies of some singles than many small scale shops put together. But the points system treats them as equal. Balancing out the charts using several charts is great, but the problem is when there is no agreement. The Beatles could have been between One and Six that week, but only the NME was right, that week. So it's no surprise that Brian has it three, halfway point!
For example if today the same method was employed on download charts. Amazon would have equal footing with iTunes. And when the OCC was still doing download charts only, we know that you could be the top in Amazon (exclusive) and not show up in the top 100 best sellers.

Yes Robbie, I think the week of the 15th saw the start of the effect of this reduction in store returns affecting a chart that already had the lowest number of store returns anyway. You can see one early example of this epitomised in Splodj's comment above whereas Traffic were 8 8 8 in three music papers and 15 in RR and obviously way off the mark.

RR's chart got even worse on the 22nd and 29th with chart positions all over the place. I actually seriously considered not including RR in the averaging process for these weeks due to this.
I actually made a comment on the chart for 22nd July, which you are due to see next that RR positions are 'all over the place'.

Brian, the difference could possibly be due to either Disc having discontinued by now to use advanced orders or that it was because Disc used a smaller sample size of store returns than NME.

Is this not the time when Record Retailer was having problems getting dealer returns on time? I think Record Retailer changed its publication day and there were a few charts compiled in July and August 1967 that were compiled using a much lower number of returns. The RR chart became very volatile for a short while. One of the records to have a bizarre RR chart run ('With A Little Help From My Friends' by Young Idea) is new at number 29. The Mike Sammes Singers will soon chart on RR with 'Somewhere My Love' and that too has a bizarre chart run. I'm thinking that perhaps the dealers that did get returns in on time were perhaps selling more MOR type records.

Yeah Splodj when I visited the newspaper library at Colindale a while back to copy all the chart positions I was well into 1969 copying the Disc chart before I realised it was the same as MM.
If it wasn't for A Whiter Shade Of Pale Engelbert would have emulated Gerry & The Pacemakers in getting his first three hits to Number One.

Ironically the classically influenced AWSOP also owed much of its success to the older record buyer...

I could never understand why EMI in the UK went with Let's Pretend for Lulu instead of To Sir With Love,
a USA #1 for 5 weeks and the biggest selling single in the U.S. of 1967. A very strange mistake.
Actually Brian that's an easy one to understand. The film wasn't released in the UK till November of 1967, so the public would have not known in July the connection of the song to the movie.
The film was much bigger in the states than it was here. Due to the fact that a black teacher was teaching white kids. Although the UK had it's element of racism, there were no laws telling black people that they couldn't mix with white people. It was the reason why the film was shot in the UK and not the USA. Even though he was clearly an American actor, which would have been odd for an American black teacher to be teaching in the UK, unless he came to the UK to train to be a teacher! It would have been hard to get the teaching qualifications (being black) in the USA, though not impossible. But it was clearly the intention of the film to highlight the silly laws of the USA, not to get caught up in reality.
Lulu admitted herself that she was just playing herself in the film. It was a bit ironic really as Lulu missed some school later in life, so much so that the school bobby came knocking on the door and Lulu's mum answered the question "Why hasn't she been at school?" With "She's a pop star".

If I remember correctly I think Dave Taylor once told me Cashbox compiled an averaged chart of their own and then added a random sample of some stores on top of this to get their chart but it was usually a week behind which would tie in with what you said Splodj.

I wonder how Cashbox compiled their British chart. Alan Smith says it was a composite topped up with small-scale sampling.

However the Cashbox Top 20 does not bear such a striking similarity to the BBC chart as the Pop Weekly Top 30 which was supposed to be compiled in the same way (but ended in Nov-65). Looking at the 1-Jul-67 Cashbox the chart appears to be comparable to w/e 24-June published UK ones, evidenced by The Turtles entering at 16, but there are significant differences. For example, it has the Kinks at 3 instead of 5 or 7.
