  • 'Dont Be Cruel' was flipped to 'Hound Dog'.

    • I think it was much more difficult in the fifties to tell the earliest example of this because records were more thought of as having two songs of equal value rather than having a defined A side and a B side. This shows up in just how often both sides of a single would chart.

Two good examples I can think of in the sixties though where planned A sides were then flipped happened in 1964. The Four Pennies #1 Juliet was originally the planned B side to Tell Me Girl, to my mind a good decision. Later in the year Sandie Shaw's Always Something...
follow up was intended to be I'd Be Far Better Off Without You but was then flipped in favour of Girl Don't Come.

        • As Brian mentioned here comes Cliff charting for the first time. Little did he know at that time that his career was about to impact greatly on popular music for decades to come.

Lonnie Donegan had a remarkable gift of foresight as well as hit making capacity. He forewarns us in 1958 at #28 of the cost of living crisis looming in 2022

          • Welcome back to the UK Brian!

'Move It' is an excellent record. The intro alone is mighty fine.

              • Bernard Bresslaw and Charlie Drake both inside the top 10 and Max Bygraves in the top 20 - was there something in the water in 1958? Three awful records by British comedians (though Bresslaw and Bygraves had yet to establish themselves as comedians). Bernard Bresslaw's career is the one that surprises me. I only know him as playing hapless characters in the Carry On films but he had a varied career which included writing poetry and playing an Ice Warrior in the 1967 Doctor Who story The Ice Warriors (which also featured Peter "Cleggy" Sallis). His hit here isn't his finest hour.

                • 'Bird Dog' poised for number one. Or is it?

Looking at the records not in the 'official' pantheon of number ones that topped ALL other charts pre-BMRB, and sorting by longevity, 'Bird Dog' is the 2nd worst injustice.

                  1. 19th Nervous Breakdown - 3/3/3
                  2. Bird Dog - 3/3/2
                  3. Please Please Me - 2/2/2
                  4. Ma He's Making Eyes At Me - 2/2
                  5. Stranger On The Shore - 2/1/1/1
                  6. Do You Want To Know A Secret - 2/1/1
                  7. Eloise - 2/1
                  8. A Picture Of You - 1/1/1

(Figures on the right are weeks spent at no. 1 in each non-'official' chart)

Totally agree Robbie. you have seen me rant here a few times about some of the appalling records that became hits at this time and the three here you mention certainly join those ranks.

I still stand by that by some margin Jackie Dennis's La Dee Dah is the worst. The accent to a fellow Scot is so exaggerated and cringeworthy it's embarrassing to listen to.

Ah Splodj you will have to wait and see if the UAC comes good for Bird Dog

Eloise lost out solely on the basis it topped NME and MM on different weeks or it would have gone top on the UAC. It did on points if you remember but lost out on the three point rule to Hugo Montenegro.

Do You Want To Know A Secret lost out by a fraction on the UAC as although it topped 2 of the 4 charts in the same week so did From Me To You which held #1 on the basis of bigger store numbers.

All of the others went to #1 on the UAC so all in all justice was done.

                            • King Creole was not released as a single in the USA. Elvis was in the army and on 1-Oct arrived in West Germany. RCA had one more single in the can (One Night) which, for me, was his last with that special exciting atmosphere.

Much as I liked One Night I always preferred I Got Stung. Strangely although One Night was the designated A side NME led with I Got Stung not One Night and it was and is often referred to as a double A side.

                                • We discuss hits more than artists. I use both this thread and kingofskiffle’s 70 years of hits to find interesting artists, and continue looking for other hits by these artists. Many artists perfects their styling and if you like it you can go both backwards and forwards to track other of their hits. It’s of course easier to find hits in a yearly setting than in a weekly, but this thread of Brian’s till 71 is quite usable for the years that kingofskiffle hasn’t completed yet, his 1964 of nearly a thousand pages came this week.

                                    • Interesting that the BBC split Volare and Come Prima as NME did even though MM and RM didn't (note that MM listed only Volare the week before) and Disc appears to only list Come Prima.

This was the most difficult single to date to work with on the UAC due to what you just describe David. It was split, changed, split somewhere else. This had to be down to the store returns I think joining or separating sides.

The Everlies are struggling, after dropping they only manage to hold on to #6 with Bird Dog. Maybe they aren't gonna make it to the top on the UAC either
