Did Billy Fury not record It's only make believe, or is that a different song?
Billy Fury's version is my favourite one. The song suited his voice perfectly. It was made for him.

              • The Platters now dominate on all charts. They never quite got the recognition they deserved for their contribution to music in the latter half of the fifties.
Buddy Holly is making surprisingly hard work of climbing the chart.
Number 18, least said the better.
Billy Eckstine, a class act. What a voice.
As an overview of this chart it's kind of a battle between the old and the new with the older traditional ballad style songs still holding on and obstinately refusing to let go.

                      • So what is the UAC tiebreaking method used here - NME allegedly having the largest survey?

                        • Yip. 3 point rule applied, equal points, equal hierarchy too so goes to highest sample of shops NME so Russ is #1.

                          • On the 28th February Chart, Chris Barber, The Beverly Sisters and The Everly Brothers should be equal 8 on the BBC Chart as they all have 36 points, No logical reason for spliting them as they did (if anything Chris Barber was climbing further than The Beverly Sisters while The Everly Brothers were stable).

On the 7th March Chart, Perry Como and Billy Eckstine are equal 19 on the BBC chart with 77 points. Perhaps they split them based on Perry Como being a new entry in the Top 20 while Billy Eckstine was at 18 last week (and so dropping).

On the 14th March Chart, pointwise, Buddy Holly and the Teddy Bears appear to have been transposed as Buddy Holly is on 55 and The Teddy Bears on 56 points for the BBC chart.

No errors on the other two BBC charts.

                              • There was one POTP in which their points calculations were revealed. That was the 1966 chart of the year, available on the web. I tried to recreate the points for a few records but gave up, concluding that it was riddled with mistakes.

Just realised that Pub Without is in waltz time, which is unusual for a singalong-type song and adds to its quirkiness. That other Aussie favourite Waltzing Matilda is not in waltz time, so maybe they got them mixed up!

                                • Disc again seems to be a week behind all the other newspaper charts when it comes to records with momentum - 'It Doesn't Matter Anymore', for example, plus records that were new to the UAC top 20. Thankfully it's relatively low sized sales panel doesn't drag down newer hits by much.

                                  • In a sales-based chart Buddy might have already been number one.

My theory is that sales for 'records with momentum' rise unevenly. So in some stores sales increase slowly but in others they are soaring ahead. This might be why BMRB and Gallup had them shooting up faster than the points-based charts which were unable to reflect sufficiently the 'soaring ahead' aspect. (I would be interested to hear alternative explanations!)

But I don't know why Disc are slowest now - nor why in the 60s, pre-BMRB, NME were fastest. Perhaps the 'soaring ahead' stores were largely the same and speed depended on the proportion of them you had.

                                          • Marty Wilde 5, Ritchie Valens 30. Yet today when 'Donna' is played on the radio it is always the Ritchie Valens version. Buyers of it would have had the bonus of a B-side (La Bamba) that was still hip enough to make the Top 50 in 1987.

                                            • As you know I already have finished compiling all the charts for 1959 and am posting these daily. I am now working on the missing 'bridging' charts where one of the music papers did not publish a chart for the year end/beginning for the years 1955, 1960, 1962, 1963, 1966, 1967 and 1968.

Once 1959 has all been posted I intend to post all the 'bridging' charts for former missing weeks to run in order from 1955 to 1968 and also the chart for the subsequent week as the Last Week positions will naturally change on some occasions due to the 'bridging' chart being added. From what I have seen so far the addition of the 'bridging' chart doesn't hugely change a lot of positions, just those that were close in points BUT it does overall make the outcome more robust by smoothing the year end charts out a bit.

Having all these together will allow those of you who keep a record of the UAC to amend your collection without searching through the entire lengthy thread to find these.

Hope you enjoy these when the time comes in about a month.

Yip, in the fifties and early sixties a lot of the British cover versions were inferior to the originals but often got the greater exposure on radio and television hence becoming the bigger hit version. There were a few exceptions of course where the British version was an improvement on the original and there is one coming later in 1959 that I think was the better version.
