As Disc did not compile a chart for 3rd January as well as 27th December it was not possible to take a reliable average for use in the UAC.
** Although the BBC compiled a chart this week it did not say how this was done. I assume it used only the NME and RM chart.

** Although the BBC compiled a chart this week it did not say how this was done. I assume it used the NME, Disc and RM chart only.

                      • I was just thinking about the bridging charts. Since we have Lonnie Donegan - Rock Island Line, Bill Hayes - The Ballad of Davy Crockett and Tennesse Ernie Ford - Sixteen Tons charting in the 31st December 1955 chart solely based on the bridging RM chart, were they actually available to do so that week since they didn't chart on NME? While I understand the principle behind the bridging chart, this may be something we need to take into account (if we can) and exclude tracks that couldn't chart due to not being released yet. Of course this information may not be available so it may be academic anyway....

I seem to remember there was some debate about whether release dates were available and/or whether all records were released at the beginning of the month?
My apologies if this was already discussed.

                        • Also note that on the 31st December 1955 chart, The Big Banjo band is a re-entry.

                            Corrected thanks.

                        • For the January 2nd 1960 chart, I think the BBC used the previous week's RM chart in their calculations. Everything matches except for Johnny Staccato Theme and Among My Souvenirs being at 10 and 9 instead of 9 and 10.

I looked into this David as it is a valid point actually.

From what I can gather Rock Island Line was released in November 1955, Sixteen Tons in October 1955 so both could have realistically charted. Davy Crockett is harder to pin down and I think some of our other experts may pin it down The 45 rpm version was released on 7th January 1956 but back then the 7'' version often followed behind the 10'' version which was still the predominant format.
It entered the Sheet Music Chart on 7th January which suggests it was around before then also. Bear in mind too that the published charts at the time were a week behind the sales week referred to.

The 'bridging' chart itself is a 'possibility' chart and not to be taken too seriously. Like I've said before discount it and just refer to actual published charts for the exact facts for those weeks but also bear in mind that none of the charts were likely to have been completely accurate either. In the early sixties remember MM charted an Elvis single that hadn't even been released yet.

                                • They’re interesting and you’re working so fast that I barely get time to paint the house in between. There is one tiny bit that can’t be solved by these charts, and that is the hit that would have charted at the bottom of the original charts if they didn’t skip those weeks. The main issue here is that your in between charts are a whole lot better than using frozen charts which not only recapture certainly wrong positions but often also wrong number of weeks.
