    • 'Judy In Disguise' - a great song. I also love the version by Silicon Teens which was released in January 1980. I also love the kitsch sound of 'Kites' by Simon Dupree. It doesn't matter how many times I hear the song, I never get fed up of hearing it.

My mum used to own a compilation album which contained 'She Wears My Ring' by Solomon King. I remember being surprised when I found out it was a hit in 1968 as it sounds a decade out of date.

      • Yeah, agree Robbie, some cracking toons on this chart, John Fred, Simon Dupree, Monkees, Four Tops, Georgie Fame, Both Beatles, Long John Baldry, Scaffold (Thank U Very Much for 'luv'), Scott Walker, Plastic Penny, all my pocket money went on those back in the day.

        • So the MMT EP made no. 1 in the Melody Maker (and DISC) chart. Here's a scan from DISC dated 13th January 1968, with some sales figures.

          • Thanks for that Brian it confirms that by 13th January MMT was indeed already a big seller with more sales to come so perhaps its inclusion in the Top Ten singles of 1967 was justified after all.

              • There was another interview with Dick James in Disc and Music Echo when 'All You Need Is Love' was released, where he goes into the arrangements he made to get it pressed quickly and makes a fairly accurate estimate of its total sales.

On the subject of sales figures for 1967 I share the scepticism about accuracy, but tend to believe the relative sales declared by individual record companies. So for example when EMI say that 'All You Need Is Love' sold more than 'Penny Lane / Strawberry Fields Forever' I see no reason to think they are lying.

Incidentally DandME did a points chart for 1967 where the 3 Dumpertruck singles also formed the top 3, albeit with 'The Last Waltz' on top.

(Although I have seen a figure of 760,000 for 1967 sales).

Yes that is it. I saw it at the 1960smusicmagazines.com website, which unfortunately appears to have now started requiring you to go through password access and some dubious advertisment hurdles.

I assume you are aware of the post on this forum that goes into detail on Beatles singles and EP sales ...

Yes. But the figures are on the conservative side since their total is about 4 million less than the official OCC singles total of 20,799,632 given in February 2004.

                              • However if you read George Martin's own biography, even he didn't know the true size of the Beatles sales. In fact the bosses at EMI were going to give him paltry Christmas bonus, which nearly resulting in him quitting. Then the "boss" offered a new deal on the bonus. When it came through, Martin was amazed how big it was. He thought they had made a mistake, saying that would mean sales at this sort of level. His boss said that's what they were. Martin concluded even with the bigger bonus, they were still robbing his eyes out!
Anybody who believes record company figures is as thick as Trump.
Even today many record company contracts still included a breakage reduction even for digital sales!
The numbers of records stolen from shops or given away free for the shops to sell for deals would probably amount to equal of the figure talked about in real sales.

Let's talk about distribution of records!
The Newspaper article from 1964 that featured on this thread said there were 8,000 shops in the UK. So to cover those shops with a reasonable number of copies. Say 100 per shop. The record company needed to send out 800,000 copies. Even 10 copies requires 80,000 sent out.
They reported to that 71 shops had supplied them with sales figures.
They calculated the number of sales for the number one (3,954). This means that each one of those 71 shops must have at least 55 copies sent to them, assuming that the record company shared out the records evenly amongst the 71. Of course that probably didn't happen in reality. But it does show how vast the quantities of singles needed to be shipped out each week.
The only accurate shipping figures that have been published are those done by that Colin chap in the 40's and early 50's.
But even back then the record companies appear to have stopped distribution of massive sellers (at least big on the sheet music charts) while the record was still peaking.
The reason the charts were important to record companies back in the 60's was it was the only way they could tell what was selling quickly. Orders from shops would have been slow coming back. Especially if the company had sent out 100,000 plus records!
Many of the shops were not telling the Record Companies what they were selling anyway. The BMRB still had that problem in the late 70's.
I think that many of the sales figures reported in the press were the record companies bragging to other record companies. You only have to look how much they were patting on the back each other when the Foundations went top in 1967. Full page adds in some of the press! Adds like that wasn't for the average Record Mirror, or NME reader. They were aimed simply at the other companies.
Education for anyone aged 12 to 16 has made a mess of the world!

"Xanadu" is surely the most esoteric word to feature in the title of two Number One singles.....
