I think if NME has a tie at 9 & 10 this means we should be looking at combining the average for 10 & 11, because the combined sales for number 3 is the output not an input. So for example in week 17, a combined number 3 would have been the record selling 6% and NME's declared number 3 would be selling only 4.75%.

This doesn't make much difference in this case, but will when one of the sides is near the top.

Combining split record sides part 3: here's a repeat of the above BMRB table, but with chart position vs. % of Top 50 record sales, for those 4 weeks in 1976.

In this case, chart positions #1 and #2 are still radically off when comparing weeks 14 vs. 17, but after that the %'s are much closer.

But either way, using my prior example of The Yardbirds split single in NME at #9 and #10, the combination (using these tables, if one could use these tables) is still closest to chart position #3.

    Interesting, fascinating...

Combining split record sides part 2: I thought I'd post for you all a modified version of the BMRB table in Michael Cable's book, showing chart position vs. record sales for 4 weeks in 1976. Shaded numbers weren't given in the book, so I interpolated them.

So we can play the what if game of combining split sides and seeing where they might end up. But as each week is unique, it's just a loose approximation. Compare the relative sales of the records at #1 and #2 of week 14 vs. week 17, quite a difference there. And quite a difference in total Top 50 sales, 55K vs. 43K. I'll post a % table too, as that gives more insight.

Yeah I noticed that too, MM is well out of step here with the other two charts.

I wonder if there was some double counting involved for MM to put Party & Livin' at 1 & 8, considering they were 4 & 21 in NME.

Yeah Elvis is steamrollering everything in his way with release after release to satisfy demand.

I love the Jim Dale single, my dad had it on the old red Parlophone label 78 it became ingrained in my memory and I've loved it ever since.

8 Elvis songs in the UAC! Good job there was no three track rule back then...

Future Carry On star Jim Dale suddenly sees his 'Be My Girl' single burst into life after a few weeks of slow upward movement. It's another George Martin production.

I don't think so Splodj. Although they ever only listed 'Let's Have A Party' they never charted 'Got A Lot.....' so I take it from that they combined sides. From what I can see all along RM split singles much less than MM or NME.

As mentioned a couple of days ago The Crickets suddenly make their move and strongly move from #8 to #2, but, they are looking over their shoulder because Elvis is closing in too

Yip. I do use NME at this point for splitting ties as it currently uses the largest store sample. From July 1960 onwards this switches to MM who by then use the largest sample. I have therefore corrected the above tie. Thanks brain

It's a shame that All Shook Up didn't enter at no.6 on the UAC as it would then have been at every position within the top 10 as it falls to 10 this week!

Thanks Robbie and Lonnie for your 4156 and 4157 posts. I had seen but not kept a note of a previous version of this proportional re-calculation. Trouble was, back in the 70s when there were no computers or spreadsheets to help us out, my weekly mental arithmetical struggles with the straight average charts would have blown a fuse with inclusion of such a formula. So thanks a mill [proportion thereof]

I've done the change over in Jan 1957, as that's when more and more records where also 45 and 78, but I could find none that where only 78. It seemed a logical time as well.

Looking down the BBC composite Top 3s (on Popscene) it appears they got even one of those wrong ...

    26-Jan 58:
    1. Jailhouse Rock = 5 points
    2. Great Balls Of Fire = 8 points
    3. Ma He's Making Eyes At Me = 7 points
    -------

I would think that by this time (October 1957) the majority of singles were sold as 45s.

From googling I can see that in the UK the first 45s were released in 1953 and the last 78s in 1960, but not when the crossover happened.

Talking of the BBC, it was about this time that Pick Of The Pops changed to be being a chart based show. Difficult to know how much this boosted interest amongst the general public in the charts, but I suspect a lot.

The first show in the new format was broadcast on Sunday 29th September 1957 reflecting the w/e 28-Sep-57 charts. So the first BBC Composite Top 3 was easy to calculate, as all 3 charts agreed on them.

All shook up and Paralyzed were on HMV.
Teddy Bear and Party were on RCA.

The last HMV Elvis single will be in February 1958, then RCA remined his only label.
