  • I have to admit I loved Joe Meek's sound. I have lots of his hits and lesser ones too.

Unbelievably The Four Preps are still active although only lead vocalist Bruce Belland is still alive. One member (who died in 2014) was Glen A. Larson whose name may be more familiar to televison viewers - he created many TV programmes including Alias Smith And Jones, Battlestar Galactica, Buck Rogers in the 25th Century, Quincy, M.E., The Fall Guy, Magnum, PI and Knight Rider.

I used to love Alias Smith And Jones as a kid, not even realising it was a rip-off of Butch Cassidy and The Sunshine Kid! By the time Battlestar Galactica arrived a few years later, everyone could see that was a (bad) copy of Star Wars.....

The wikipedia page for Glen A. Larson reveals he was much cricitised for plagiarism and indeed was fined for stealing plots and characters from The Rockford Files for his own programmes. His response to the fine was to steal the theme music instead which apparently led to James Garner punching him when the two met...

                  • Bill Bailey Won't You Please Come Home - Bobby Darin. Is that the song about the fella who won the Strictly Come Dancing competition?

Stairway To Heaven - Neil Sedaka. An early version of the Led Zeppelin tune?

He'll Have To Go - Jim Reeves. He'll Have To Stay - Jeanne Black. So that's where The Clash got the idea for Should I stay or should I go?

                      No it's completely different.
                      A few of the lyrics:
I'll build a stairway to heaven
I'll climb to the highest star
I'll build a stairway to heaven
Cause heaven is where you are
Education for anyone aged 12 to 16 has made a mess of the world!

                          • Jimmy Jones achieves #1 status this week as he holds that position in 3 of the four charts.
The Shadows kick off their solo chart career with a stunning single that is as vibrant today as it was back in 1960. The same applies to Johnny Kidd.
It's purely a personal opinion but I think Jericho Brown's Look For A Star is superior to Garry Mills' version.

                            • Looking at these charts you can see why the Beatles had a hard time getting signed. The acts are nearly all solo artists. The only group being the Shadows and that was all instrumental! The rest of the groups were backing acts for solo artists, even the Shadows!
You go along to a record company with an act like the "Beatles" and they would have said plenty of backing bands, who's the singer?
The other reason was the money. EMI would give you 1d a side (45 rpm). So a group would have to split that four ways in the Beatles case plus 5 ways for their manger!
Education for anyone aged 12 to 16 has made a mess of the world!

Donald Peers' Papa Loves Mama was much played by Uncle Mac on Childrens' Choice back in the day. Happy Memories of that show on a Saturday morning.

to Elvis Presley and 9.75 to Connie Francis
and awarded to NME to give a more representative

                                    • NME, RM, MM, Disc all go with Cliff at #1 and RR goes with Johnny Kidd. It kinda stands out who is out of step big time. Nuff said

                                      • Shirley Bassey wanted to play Nancy in the film version of Oliver Twist, the song that the character sings in the musical, which has just entered at 22. Though the film itself was still in the future at this point. Of course the film people went with a white woman in the end. However it was a bitter blow for Shirley and was probably for racist reasons should didn't get the part. Many years later the production of Oliver Twist would include a black woman playing Nancy. It's just a shame Shirley wasn't given the part in the film. She was the better singer after all.

                                        • On the 30th July 1960 Adam Faith - "Made You" should be #10 in NME Charts while "When Johnny Comes Marching Home" which your right is at #16 in NME.

On the 6th August 1960 Jimmy Jones "Handy Man" you've put down twice and should be on 110 points on Total Points Scored.

                                          • Hmmmm. I'll go back and fix those , thanks again. The early sixties are more difficult to work with due to five charts and all the split sides on NME. However for the foreseeable future I will post one chart a day in order for me to take more time checking each chart to eradicate these occasional errors.

                                            • Guys, I have amended the two charts for those of you that copy them. Adam Faith's Ultimate Chart Position and points were correct I had simply not changed the NME position back to 10 once I had completed the average for the split title position.

I normally get a prompt when I type in a duplicate title but somehow I missed the Jimmy Jones one.

Posting one chart a day is better for now as these earlier years take a bit longer due to working with 5 charts, the NME's split sides which are more frequent at this time, and I now want to check each chart in detail before posting because of these higher risks of error. Hope this is ok with you guys , as I strive at all times to give you 100% accuracy.
