        • Roy Orbison kicks off his illustrious career with a single heading for #1, but Ricky Valance will beat him to it.

          • Merry Christmas Mr Tibbs.

I've always preferred 'The Girl Of My Best Friend' to 'A Mess Of The Blues'. At least the song became a hit in its own right in 1976.

            • Agreed Robbie. It was the stronger side. Mess Of Blues was never one of his best.

              • Interesting facts from 45cat.com: 'A Mess Of Blues' was the last RCA Victor single to be released on both 78rpm and 45rpm. The single was poorly marketed in the UK as RCA released the single as a stop gap while waiting for legal wranglings over 'It's Now Or Never' to be sorted. The problem was copyright problems in the European markets. In the US there was no such problems. In the US 'A Mess Of Blues' was relegated to the B side of 'It's Now Or Never' and 'The Girl Of My Best Friend' never saw the light of day as a single.

                    • Although Mark Wynter made the Top 20 with his version, Image Of A Girl, it potentially would have been bigger if the sales were not diluted by Jericho Brown and Nelson Keene also taking their versions into the Top 30.

This happened often throughout the fifties and early sixties when competing versions all charted splitting sales. This struck me as relevant just now as I was working on the February 1961 charts where undoubtedly Petula Clark would have had a #1 with Sailor if Anne Shelton's version was not also in the Top 10 as Petula obviously came close by topping both Disc and RR in the same week.

                        • The Ventures debut this week with Walk Don't Run soon to be joined by The John Barry Seven version and both will reach the Top 10. Even by this time this is where The Sheet Music Chart was useful working alongside The Record Chart as it detailed how well a song did overall when there were competing versions on the chart.

                                  • I printed out the 24 September Chart of Brian's and put on the sheet the own's from 45 Cat (less the value on 45 Cat, then added the points of the 30 back in giving it a new look. The owns on 45 Cat are one of the best indicators of how well a record sold since the site has a huge membership and a massive amount of record information. If you remove the valuation figure you can remove the rare collectable records and people who might have got it for the money. Though looking at some valuations and people that own the records the site must have a lot of very rich people as members!
For example Sex Pistols Anarchy In The U.K - has 112 owns with a valuation of over £700!

The Shadows remain top (I had to ignore the valuation figure as it would have cancelled out nearly all the owns) I assume the valuation figure on 45 Cat (£155) must be for an odd version. As I can't see the stock copy being that valuable since it topped the charts for weeks!!
The rest of the top ten:
                                    2 Duane Eddy
                                    3 Roy Orbison
                                    4 Johnny Kidd
                                    5 Elvis Presley
                                    6 Cliff - Tease
                                    7 Everly Brothers
                                    8 Adam Faith
                                    9 Ricky Valance
                                    10 Cliff - Nine

                                    Five out of Brian's Chart - Numbers 21, 24, 26, 27, 30.
In the chart from outside Sam Cooke 17, Bryan 20, Jim 22, Frank 28, Wanda 29.

The worst performer and very probably a hyped record is Frank Weir and Caribbean Honeymoon. This has only FIVE owns on 45 Cat! Terrible performance for an NME chart record!
Education for anyone aged 12 to 16 has made a mess of the world!

                                      * This week the split sides would have affected NME's
averaged chart position so an average was taken
from the other 4 charts giving an average of 4.25
and awarded to NME to give a more representative
chart position for both sides together.
