            • The curse of the competing versions strikes again. Both John Barry and The Ventures reaching the bottom end of the Top 10 with a record that could have been bigger if sales were not split.

Brian you should be able to put this piece of text outside the boxes. Or you can put it in the initial right up at the start. If you are using Google Chrome it should allow the "past as plain text" option for it.

                      • Gerry Marsden being talked about a lot, quite rightly, but almost unnoticed was the death of Geoff Stephens on Christmas Eve. His Wiki entry https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geoff_Stephens lists a load of hits he was associated with. But even this seems incomplete – e.g. 'Smile a little smile for me' by The Flying Machine is not mentioned yet got to number 5 in the USA.

                        • Yeah another two sixties legends leaving us sadly. I always preferred Flying Machine's follow up 'Hanging On The Edge Of Sadness' which did not chart here on in the States, but they did have a minor American hit with a cover of Marmalade's Baby Make It Soon.

averaged chart position so an average was taken
from the other 4 charts giving an average of 4.75
to The Everly Brothers and 12 to Elvis Presley
and awarded to NME to give a more representative

                              • Interesting to see one version of 'Never on Sunday' pull away from the others. I recall that record shops would offer to play different versions of a song to help you decide which to buy.

                                • Yeah three versions on the Top 30 Splodj and Don Costa having the slightly bigger hit, but again sales were divided so no big winner.

                                    • Elvis and I'm trying to resit singing "from Walls Ice Cream" according to 45 Cat had 270,000 advanced orders!
Here's another comment from 45 Cat that sums it up:
This eagerly awaited record sold in droves and shops were cleared out of their stock within minutes of them arriving. To this day there are thousands still around, most of them well worn but also a few gems in pristine condition.
Elvis never looked back after this and it established him as the undisputed leading figure in popular music, at least until the The Beatles came on the scene.
There's no actual release date (just October) on 45 Cat. But the chart date would put the record as being out between 24 and 28 October. If they were using Friday dates I suspect that would have been 28 October.

By the way the title proper is:
Elvis Presley With The Jordanaires It's Now Or Never (O Sole Mio)
Education for anyone aged 12 to 16 has made a mess of the world!

                                        • All 5 newspapers were agreed on Elvis entering at number one. This is what NME said,

"Its copyright problems solved relatively quickly, It's Now Or Never was cleared for UK release and amassed a staggering advance order from dealers of almost half a million - the largest ever known at this time. Its immediate Number One entry was the only the third in chart history, and Presley's second after Jailhouse Rock. Such was the customer demand that first weekend that at least one London record shop closed for normal business and concentrated simply on selling huge stocks of It's Now Or Never."

I assume NME is including My Old Man's a Dustman, which only entered at number one in the NME and RM.

Similarly 'Jailhouse Rock' only entered at number one in the NME and RM. However, unlike Dustman, I expect Jailhouse Rock will enter at number one in the Ultimate because the only other chart at that time was MM.

(The first Disc chart had Jailhouse Rock at number one, jointly with Story Of My Life by Michael Holliday. But this was w/e 8-Feb-58, so we don't know if it would have entered the Disc chart at number one in the week of release.)
