Future turmoil would be reserved for the musical styles and acts that faded away in the wake of the success of The Beatles. Unless I'm mistaken, there isn't one vocal group in the top 20. A year later the look of the charts had changed completely.

Yeah Robbie, Rock and Roll in the fifties although changing the face of music didn't have the same impact as what is about to befall in late 1963. The wind of change will completely alter the direction music will take within a few months. The difference in musical styles and tastes like you say will be like night and day between early 1963 and what is to come later in 1963 and then taking off completely in 1964.

Overnight even the biggest names in popular music will suffer, the domination that Elvis, Cliff, The Shadows will evaporate and although they will continue to be popular they will never be the same force in music again as pre 1964.

George Martin's famous remark upon the recording of Please Please Me, "Congratulations gentlemen, you've just recorded your first number one" has a sad ring to it today.

Ignore RR Splodj as the irrelevance it was. Please Please Me was a #1.

A sad ring for revisionist history, and music fans who don't know the facts, but a joy for actual truth! As true chartists, we are to FIGHT for truth and history, and bring it to the masses who've been indoctrinated with revisionism. I do it all the time, in the many forums and blogs I frequent, and some occasional one off visits. In book reviews on Amazon etc (which reminds me, I still need to respond to the new 'official' chart books of the 60s). I take every opportunity to tell the truth, and expose it to others. The responses I get are interesting, most times others are thankful for the hidden truth being revealed. Occasionally some are stubborn and refuse to acknowledge history and logic. A new line I'm going to start using: how can a company that did not exist prior to Feb 1969 decide in 2001 what was 'official' for 1963? It's ridiculous, and hilarious, and I do have fun explaining it all, ha... Never quit, never give in, never never never !!

That's a battle I fight as well Robin. Here is an interesting fact on history being re-written. Back when the BBC stopped using their own chart on POTP and adopted that aberration the RR 'official' ha ha chart I wrote to the BBC to complain about this. I did get a polite but curt reply to the effect that, and get this, that they never had a chart of their own I must be mistaken, there had never been a BBC chart and there was no record of such in their archive.

Effectively they paint brushed their own chart conveniently out of existence. I think 'The Official Charts Company' leaned on the BBC to adopt the RR chart retrospectively to give it credibility and gain wider acceptance.

The above chart covers the very day (4 September 1962) when the single version of 'Love Me Do' was recorded (the recording session included Ringo Starr on drums, the album version, with Andy White on drums, was recorded a week later on 11 September 1962). The recording followed three weeks of turmoil for The Beatles following the sacking of Pete Best.

You're not mistaken there are no groups in the 20 apart from the Shadows, who didn't sing. Why? Well the money you were paid for a single was 1d per copy per side. So it didn't make sense to have a group, which had to split the money between them. Even the Shadows started out as Cliff's backing group. With only a few Record Labels in charge, they were saying that groups were over. You can imagine loads of groups going to them with "Shadows" style tracks. And of course they said no, there was the Shadows and nobody would have bothered to create another act like them. Nearly all the chart acts were given songs to sing. The Music Publishers got the writers of songs to send into them. They picked out the best and submitted them to the A&R department of each Record Company. The A&R Men would then pick them for the artists, who sang and recorded them. The situation changed when George Martin wanted an act that would sell for the Parlophone Label. His previous efforts were comedy acts, such as Peter Sellers. So he gambled on the Beatles being enough to knock out the big guns of the rival label Columbia - all part of EMI. But the connection to George was only made when Brian Epstein went back to EMI and the boss of the Record Company to ask for a favour. As Epstein was considered one of the top Manger's of a Record Shop in the country and was that good with his predictions of what would sell and what would not, resulting in if Epstein ordered more copies of one single than the norm, the word went out to reps to push that record! So the boss of EMI would have asked George Martin to look at this band.
Of course after there success all the other bands from Liverpool were signed up by Epstein and then of course Parolphone! And after that the other labels signed everyone else. Including the man from Decca, who signed the Rolling Stones. He wasn't going to make that mistake again!
Of course the real success of the Beatles (mostly underplayed) were the songwriting of Lennon and McCartney. That helped put an end to the gravy train of the previous Music Publishers system. But for a while the song writing team helped many an act have a big hit with their songs, just like the old system. But the music was all based on black music from America and of course people like Buddy Holly.

True story now, guy walks into a record shop and says "have you got Buddy Holly Sings The Beatles?".

Surprisingly it's MM out of step this week with Elvis at #4 but #1 in all other 3 charts. Just weird.
1962 comes alive with the utterly brilliant and captivating Telstar by The Tornados setting the chart alight. It will also become the UK's third US number one.

To me it looks like it should have been placed on the BBC chart as a new entry for that week as the points indicate such, but it was not. Then it is completely absent for the weeks 17th, 24th, and 31st on the transcript. It re-appears on 6th September.

Interesting. "I'm Telling You Now" is missing from the EARLY Dave/Trevor BBC files for Aug 1963, but shows up in the LATER file revisions, at #28, #12, #3, #2.

'Let's Dance' is a classic. My mum owned the record and I recall hearing the song many times as a youngster. The song has a late 50s vibe / sound to it though, I keep forgetting its from 1962.
