I assume that the bleep in 'A Boy Named Sue' was put in as a joke, because the unexpurgated version on the album reveals the missing words to be merely 'son of a bitch'. Even the BBC could have played that!

There is a lot of consistency between the three charts again this week in the top ten with general agreement and records at most just one position out between any chart.

Some good records too around the chart, especially, David Bowie about to break in, Crosby Stills and Nash, Mama Cass, Lou Christie,The Box Tops and Bob Dylan hanging around too.

Ha Ha, yeah enjoy the moment, that said they often will, or sometimes two out of the three will agree, but there are some times ahead when there will be a three way split on #1

Cliff's duet with Hank Marvin is interesting as by this point the hits had dried up for The Shadows and they had disbanded at the end of 1968 (they would later reunite and score hits in the 70s and 80s). Perhaps this was Cliff's way of helping out his former backing group's lead guitarist.

'Space Oddity' has yet to chart. It was released in time to coincide with the moon trip, but this backfired somewhat ...

The first time I heard it on the radio was on 27 July on the David Symonds show. He said that they had deliberately not played it earlier because they wanted to ensure that the astronauts had returned safely first.

The sound of Motown really was changing. Although that was to be expected, the clamour for 60s style Motown never went away in the early 1970s as can be seen by the numerous re-issues and chart re-entries of old Motown releases that follow in the next few years.

I meant to post the other day, 20 July 1969 was "one small step for man" but a historic day for mankind as Apollo 11 touched down on the moon and Neil Armstrong walked and talked himself into history. The success of 'In The Year 2525' with its futuristic leanings must have been fuelled by the moon landings although 'Bad Moon Rising' is somewhat of a negative take on things...

The Temptations debut with their new 'psychedelic' soul rock sound as opposed to their previous style. Diana Ross and The Supremes though were the first to take this path with Love Child. Stevie Wonder will follow with a more progressive change in sound in mid 1970 followed by Marvin Gaye in 1971.

Yeah Top Pops had the same problem overall as especially the earlier years of RR in that they used a very low sample of shops and all W H Smith so the overall poll wasn't anywhere near robust enough.

Yeah the Creedence record was easily their best although I loved all their material at this time.

Thanks again brain for liking each chart

Although 'Bad Moon Rising' was number one for 3+ weeks on the three major charts, it never made it in Top Pops. Similar situation with 'Wandrin Star'.

I think these ommisions are worse than the unique number ones it did put there. One of these, 'My Cherie Amour', I recall made number one in NME's midweek chart in the Sunday Mirror.

These are the anomalies that intrigue us though and keep us hooked on these charts. One guy isn't very keen on this round of Ultimate Average Charts as he feels I am comparing oil and water, ie, comparing sales against points, and yes there are differences between both compilation methods but on a fun basis it does make for an interesting chart, and obviously still enjoyed by many.

There are two other placings in that last chart that seem odd ...

BMRB has 'It Mek' dive to 22 when it is up at 10 & 12 in the other two. Conversely MM has 'Something in the air' up at 12 when it has fallen to 21 in the other two; next week in MM it will dive to 26 on its way out.

Yes, of course. Sorry, mis-typed. Meant to say as in RR. I'd not forgotten about RM.

For this the last week, weeks, etc are all back. The last week positions do match that chart though. So it could very well be down to either some sales being removed for that record (if they thought it odd) or a supply issue. The shops reporting to BMRB had lower stock than others.

Tragedy behind the jollity though, as by this time their 19 year old drummer who had been responsible for the novel percussive effects was dead.
