              Catalog Albums/Billboard 200 Chart Update – July 25, 2020

Dead At Work: “Workingman’s Dead” Reaches Sales Top 5

A 50th anniversary edition of Grateful Dead’s Workingman’s Dead returns to the chart this week at #5 on Top Album Sales and #53 BB200. Jerry Garcia passed away right at the midpoint of those 50 years in 1995. The Dead have a faithful following and their re-releases and packaged live shows still sell well; this is their third different album that has been the week’s top catalog seller. The Best Of – Skeletons From The Closet topped the chart for three weeks after Garcia’s death in 1995, and Anthem Of The Sun was a top catalog seller for a week in 2018. Workingman’s Dead had a single week on the Catalog chart in 1995 at #35... The Beatles’ Abbey Road has an uptick to #13 TAS and is in second place among catalog sellers this week. Besides Workingman's Dead, Abbey Road is the only other catalog album to reach the top 5 of TAS this year; it had a week at #5 in the year's first week.

On the Catalog chart, Queen’s Greatest Hits spends its 15th straight week at #1, running its 2020 total to 25 weeks. With 55 weeks at #1, it is now the second-longest running #1 Catalog album, with all of its #1 weeks coming in 2018 and after. The top-running #1 is of course Bob Marley & The Wailers’ Legend with 126 weeks atop the chart; it is the #2 Catalog album for the 11th straight week, although the gap widens on the BB200 to 18 positions (#28 vs. #46).

              MIG’S MILESTONES
Michael Jackson, The Essential Michael Jackson – #28 Cat, #121 BB200 – Reaches 350 weeks in the top 200 albums(*) as a catalog album. It had only five weeks on the old Comprehensive chart as a current when it was released in 2005.
Elvis Presley, The Essential Elvis Presley – #167 BB200 – This Essential series album was on a bit more of a slow burn, but reaches 50 weeks on the BB200 as a catalog album. It, too, had just five weeks on the Comprehensive chart as a current after its release, in 2007.
Billy Joel, The Essential Billy Joel – #43 Cat, #148 BB200 – I guess it was an Essential week on the charts! This 2001 release reaches 200 weeks on the BB200, including 16 as a current and 184 as a catalog album.
Eagles, Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975 – #24 Cat, #107 BB200 – Week #550 on the Catalog chart for this album, one of the big sellers (if not the biggest seller) of the 1970s.
(*) = Total includes Comprehensive chart weeks from late 2003 – late 2009.

              NEW ON THE CHARTS
Grateful Dead, Workingman’s Dead – #3 Cat, #53 BB200, #1 CS – This album is a re-entry on Catalog (and Catalog Sales) after charting for one week at #35 in 1995, and is a first-time catalog entry in the top 200, where it makes its first appearance since 1971.
Go-Go’s, Go-Go’s Greatest – #42 CS – The Go-Go’s were the first all-female band to reach #1 on the albums chart in the USA (Beauty And The Beat, 1981 release, reached #1 in 1982). This 1990 release reached only #127 BB200 and is the second chart entry for the band, whose #1 hit album reached #24 Catalog/Catalog Sales in 2009.

WANDERING STARS – Reserved for long-absent albums returning to the charts:
Grateful Dead, Workingman’s Dead – See above under New On The Charts.
Harry Styles, Harry Styles – #177 BB200, #25 CS – This BB200 #1 from 2017 returns to the BB200 for the first time in 2020.

CATALOG NOTES – Parenthetical numbers are weeks in the top 10 followed by 2020 weeks in the top 10:
On Catalog Sales/TAS: It was a rare week with four entries in the top 10, led by Grateful Dead’s Workingman’s Dead returning at #1 for its first top 10 week. Also getting its first week in the top 10, after a chart return earlier this year, is Mac Miller’s The Divine Feminine, rising to a new high of #8… BTS’ Love Yourself: Answer (4/4) and Prince & The Revolution’s Purple Rain (Soundtrack) (32/3) return to the top 10 at #6 and #9, respectively. The first of these albums had a 19-position climb, the week’s best… Last week’s three top 10 entries all fall out this week, with Selena’s Ones (2/1) dropping 1-13, Alan Jackson’s Precious Memories Collection (7/1) falling 2-28, and Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours (80/23) down 10-17… Joining them in falling from the top 10 is Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side Of The Moon (526/27), ending a 13 week top 10 run… Dropping from the Top Album Sales chart, and thus the catalog sales tally, for the first time in 13 weeks is Queen’s Greatest Hits I II & III: The Platinum Collection.
On Catalog/BB200: In addition to the return of Grateful Dead’s Workingman’s Dead at #3 for its first top 10 week, 2Pac’s Greatest Hits (50/9) and The Beatles’ Abbey Road (63/8) return to the top 10 at the bottom two positions. The former album reaches 50 total weeks in the Catalog top 10; the latter rises 10 positions to #10 for the week’s biggest Catalog chart jump… The Fab Four also lose a top 10 as The Beatles’ 1 (229/27) drops 9-11, ending a 22 week run in the top 10… Also leaving the top 10 are Zac Brown Band’s Greatest Hits So Far (8/1) and Lynyrd Skynyrd’s All Time Greatest Hits (4/1), both after entering the top 10 last week… Melanie Martinez’ Cry Baby leaves the Catalog chart after an 11 week run which topped out at #13, the album’s first weeks on the chart since 2017.

TOP CATALOG ALBUMS WITH NO TOP 10 WEEKS IN 2020 / NO TOP 10 WEEKS EVER – Numbers in parentheses are overall chart weeks, overall top 10 weeks, weeks on chart in 2020, overall peak position, 2020 peak position, current position. If the top album with no 2020 top 10 weeks is the same as the album with no top 10 weeks overall, only one is shown:
Catalog Sales: Charlie Daniels, 16 Biggest Hits (2/0/2/#12/#12/#12)
Catalog: AC/DC, Back In Black (1029/169/30/#1/#12/#12)
              Kendrick Lamar, DAMN. (4/0/4/#13/#13/#16)

I'm in complete agreement. Over the past few years, it seems like more weeks than not, the Hot 100 has been overtaken by songs from an album (or 2, and sometimes 3) that dropped the week before, with the majority of those being from artists representing the so called "mumble rap" genre. I recognize the music industry has changed. Labels releasing proper singles to promote an album is increasingly becoming a practice of the past. It's true that audiences don't get to choose which songs are played on the radio, and streaming is a direct measurement of what audiences are choosing to listen to.

Others may disagree, but, I don't necessarily think of a bunch of album songs which chart for a week or two due to large streaming numbers as "hits". If someone purchases a digital single, there's no way to factor how many times that person listens to that song - but if they are streaming the song through a monitored service, every play counts. Also, it seems like with streaming, there is far less week to week turnover of songs, outside of those debuting from a new album and quickly falling off the charts.

I'm not sure what Billboard can do to adjust the formula, because I think there's a portion of music lovers whose music consumption can't be tracked in a way Billboard can apply to its charts.

Has anybody checked out Rolling Stone's 'Top 100 Popular Songs' chart? It's based entirely on streaming, and is even less genre diverse than the Billboard Hot 100 has become. I think it's fair to say the Hot 100 has always been driven by what's popular with younger audiences. Perhaps older audiences prefer to listen music from "back in the day", liking what's familiar and what's nostalgic.

A question: I've noticed Billboard now has genre specific "Hot" charts. I tried to research how they're calculated, and, what makes them different than already existing charts - but couldn't find anything specific. I'm guessing a chart like "Hot Alternative Songs" is compiled exactly like the Hot 100, with the difference being it only features songs Billboard assigns to the given genre?

^ Hot alternative songs is compiled from airplay, downloads and streaming, same as the billboard hot 100. This chart only started in June of 2020.
There is another chart called Alternative airplay which as its name suggests is compiled from airplay only.

I don't really mind albums taking over the hot 100. If an artist is popular enough to have album tracks score more points from streaming than singles do from streaming+airplay(+sales) then they should be amongst the top 100 tracks. If you want to know the 'real' current hits then the album tracks aren't that hard to filter and if you want to know the past hits you can just look at Hot 100 Recurrents or year end charts. Then of course there are the 50 song deep separate streaming/digital sales/airplay hot 100 component charts. And separate Hot and component charts for every major genre besides Pop (why doesn't that exist? would be more useful than Hot Rap Songs).

If anything is bad in the streaming era, it's the albums charts. There are so many old albums and artist compilations charting it's not even funny anymore. Especially on Rock/Alt/Folk.

^ I almost think Billboard have too many different charts, i mean has anyone actually counted how many in total they have ?
Also the Hot 100 changed from being a "singles" chart to a "songs" chart back in 1998!! Since then album cuts have been permitted to chart so it's nothing new. I do think they should limit the amount of album tracks that are allowed to chart at once ( they do this in the UK), with i think three being the maximum.

They post about 150 charts, and then have another 100 they compile but not post. Those 100 used to appear in the search (as did about 300 archived and test charts) but while the data is there, as you can still find it in artist histories, it won't show up on the search anymore.

They did cut down the charts a bit earlier this year, 68 charts, mostly album and digital song sales, ceased being compiled from January 18th on.
