She’ll be 17 years old when she gets the #1, where does that sit in amongst youngest ever artists to debut at #1? Obviously older than Billie Piper but the same age as Britney, although Britney was technically younger.

Wellerman: Viral TikTok sea shanty is heading for this week's Official Singles Chart

Sea Shanties are the latest global music trend sparked by TikTok.

                      https://www.officialcharts.com/chart...-chart__32146/

                      By Rob Copsey
Unless you've been living under a rock for the past couple of weeks, you'll be aware that sea shanties are the latest global music trend sparked by TikTok.

The movement has been gathering pace over the past few months but went stratospheric at the end of last year when 26-year-old postman and musician Nathan Evans, from Airdrie, North Lanarkshire, posted a video of himself on TikTok performing popular sea shanty Wellerman.

Within days, shanties had overtaken the social media platform and become a global online obsession, known as ShantyTok, with people posting their own sea shanties and memes.

The movement is now sending the song that started it all into the mainstream; a recording of Wellerman by Bristonian band The Longest Johns is currently at Number 33 on the Official UK Singles Chart in the latest update (January 18).

The song itself is a classic sea shanty, written and sung by the crews of whaling boats working for the biggest whaling and export company out of New Zealand, named Weller. The version by The Longest Johns was recorded in late 2019, when the sea shantie trend first kicked off online.
MORE: Viral internet sensations that became huge chart hits

The band, comprising of Jonathan 'JD' Darley, Andy Yates, Robbie Sattin and Dave Robinson, have spent the last eight years performing sea shanties at festivals across the UK and had garnered a small but loyal fanbase.

Towards the end of 2020, The Longest Johns allowed Twitch streamers to use their music for free in the background of their streams, and one song in particular exploded: Wellerman.

Why is this happening now? Apart from the obvious response - why not? - The Longest Johns credit their success down to genre's simplicity, similar to football chants, making them easy to sing along to.

Others are putting the explosion of sea chanties down to the pandemic; the songs are usually about people stuck in a difficult situation but assured better times are ahead. Lyrics to Wellerman include: "Soon may the Wellerman come/ To bring us sugar and tea and rum/ One day, when the tonguin’ is done/ We’ll take our leave and go."

                          According to JosephStyles on BuzzJack
Interestingly, Olivia Rodrigo's All I Want is still on ACR despite a mammoth increase in streams last week
if it re-enters, it will be the song's 10th week in the top 100
it shouldn't have even been on ACR before this week?

Hands up who has heard of the album at 47?

KT Tunstall is in fact a re-entry - it's her Ultimate Edition.

if it re-enters, it will be the song's 10th week in the top 100
it shouldn't have even been on ACR before this week?
I can never work out how the OCC applies its rules. The Chart Rules booklet used to be straightforward at one time but since the addition of streaming data to the charts it's become a complete mess with different interpretations of the rules. I thought that so long as a record is within its first 3 years of release its chart status is "frozen" when it falls off the top 100. On its last week inside the top 100 back in March 2020 the single had just one week of decline so at the very least it should be charting on SCR for another two weeks. Seemingly not though, I just think the OCC are making up the rules as they go along.

actually you don't know how does it behave (increase or decrease) while being below top 100 so it may break the 3-week decline rule there. Just my guess

but it should still be allowed 10 weeks on the chart before ACR even comes into play - how it behaves below the top 100 should have no bearing

This is my understanding of how ACR is supposed to work, it's how a track performs in the top 100 alone that should determine when it moves from SCR to ACR. SCR / ACR is supposed to only apply to the top 100 or at least that's how I interpreted the chart rules.

The OCC only officially publish the Top 100 ACR-adjusted chart, so logically this would be what the rules are based on, otherwise there is no transparency to how they apply their rules and its all a big fiddle! Of course the charts are complied for the music industry and not us, and we know that they compile a non-ACR chart and probably compile a chart that includes every single song that has had at least one stream or sale for internal use. Some of the music industry perhaps do get to see the unadulterated charts and/or a top 200/500 or whatever number they wish to go down to, meaning that those in the music industry may know when/why the rules are applied and in that sense I guess it doesn't have to be only the top 100...

I don't think ACR/SCR is applied to top 100 only. Imagine if the track run was like:

                                                40 (SCR) -56 (SCR) -67 (SCR) -99 (SCR) - 101 (SCR?) -100 (SCR) -99 (SCR) - 99 (SCR) - 99 (SCR) -120 (ACR) - 50 (+25% increase= reset to SCR?)

I don't know if this is the way how it can work
