Wolf Alice on course for first Number 1 on the Official Albums Chart with Blue Weekend

James, Crowded House and Rise Against are other new entries aiming for this week's Top 10.

    By Jack White
Wolf Alice are heading for Number 1 on this Friday’s Official Albums Chart with their third studio album Blue Weekend.

The alt-rock group are outselling the rest of the Top 5 combined in today’s Official Albums Chart Update (June 7) having notched up the most physical and download sales across the first three days of the tracking week.

The London band will discuss the making of Blue Weekend on this week’s episode of The Record Club, our livestream series with Record Store Day and National Album Day, in association with Bowers & Wilkins.

Wolf Alice’s 2015 debut album My Love Is Cool and 2017 follow-up Visions of a Life both reached Number 2 on the Official Albums Chart, missing out to Florence + The Machine and Shania Twain respectively after being in the lead at the midweek point.

Meanwhile, Manchester band James are on course for their 10th Top 10 album with All The Colours of You (2), while last week’s Number 1 SOUR (3) from Olivia Rodrigo rounds out the Top 3.

Amazon has three. But i think only 1 is an official UK release. There are 3 more listed on Discogs as US. All are available to buy in UK.

Easy Life and Texas take on Olivia Rodrigo for this week’s Number 1 on the Official Albums Chart

Easy Life are looking to claim their second consecutive Top 10 entry, while Texas could pick up their highest-charting album in 20 years.
    By Jack White
Easy Life and Texas have emerged as the chart challengers to Olivia Rodrigo for Number 1 on this week’s Official Albums Chart.

Following her record-breaking Official Chart Double last week, 2021 breakout star Olivia is in pole position for a second week at Number 1, but rising talents Easy Life and Scottish music royalty Texas won’t let her secure the top spot without a fight.

Olivia’s SOUR – which claimed the year’s biggest week of chart sales last Friday – is on the cusp of a second week on the chart throne, racking up the most album streams over the Bank Holiday.

Leicester indie-pop quintet Easy Life are at Number 2 midweek with their debut album Life’s A Beach. The album has the most combined physical sales so far this week and is on track to mark their second Top 10 entry following their 2020 Junk Food EP, which topped out at Number 7.
MORE: The Official Top 40 biggest albums of 2021 so far

Rounding out the Top 3 at 3 are Scottish legends Texas with their 10th studio album Hi. The collection – inspired by unearthed tracks that didn’t make the cut for their seminal 1997 album White On Blonde – was the most downloaded over the Bank Holiday weekend. Hi is on course to become Texas’ highest-charting album since The Greatest Hits which reached Number 1 in 2000.

Returning to the Top 40 following its release on vinyl is Taylor Swift’s sixth Number 1 album Evermore (4), the best-seller of the week so far on the format. Closing out the Top 5 currently are Scottish rockers Del Amitri with Fatal Mistakes (5) their first album in 19 years.

David Bowie rarities set The Width of a Circle is new at Number 7, experimental rock outfit Black Midi are heading for their first Top 10 with Cavalcade at Number 8, Bugzy Malone’s second LP The Resurrection is in line for the Top 10 at Number 9, and country rock band Blackberry Smoke could clinch their second top flight album with You Hear Georgia at Number 10.
MORE: The Official Top 40 best-selling vinyl releases of 2021 so far

Orchestral album Reprise from Moby could become his 13th UK Top 40 album (12), while vinyl reissues could see Toyah’s The Blue Meaning (22), David Bowie’s The Man Who Sold The World (30) and RIOT! by Paramore (36) return to the Top 40.

Finally, two more new entries could claim Top 40 places including Surrounded by Buckinghamshire rock singer Justin Sullivan at 38, and Live in Stuttgart 1975 from German group Can at 39.

I didn't even notice the Penfriend album had jumped to 16 yesterday! She said the initial #36 had missing sales (should have been #12) and still says they aren't all being reported.

There's some more detail on what has occurred here: how the system works in terms of an independent artist ensuring your sales are counted.

ESC songs always underperform because of streaming not being as strong. It's actually very impressive that an Italian language rock song can be top 40 in the mids. It's holding up better than a winner usually does at this stage. In fact......

However the track is likely to increase its streams this week by more than 25% and so will get an automatic reset back to SCR. So it will vanish from the chart this week and will re-enter inside the top 20 next week.

Sounds familar. Not quite as bad as when Ed Sheeran released his collab album and the no.1 streamer/seller was removed because of ACR knocking it down to the 4th or lower 'seller', so it vanished from no.2, only to re-enter the following week due to the SCR reset (though I think it only re-entered at 2 or 3).

It'll be back in short order and will probably stay charted for a tediously extended time, but it still jars with me that a clearly singular chart run gets interrupted temporarily by a totally arbitrary and artificial rule that says it can't appear if there are three or more tracks from that artist that were consumed more. It is especially noticeable with big hits.
