Thanks for confirming the inevitable, Robbie. End-of-era stuff for sure. Curiously this week (ending 9th) marks the first week I began a subscription to MW 28 years ago. If you'd have told me it will no longer be a printed publication by the 2020s I'd have sneered - indeed back then it seemed all the more likely that we would sooner see the demise of both the single and the charts as we knew them than the disappearance of MW itself as a weekly journal. But then the all-conquering dominance of the internet was something only the most imaginative or technically-aware among us could've envisaged.

On a slightly related, and sad, note, and as rumoured back in November, Music Week has announced today that it will no longer be publishing a weekly magazine. This means that the issue dated 14 December 2020 is the last weekly issue to be published, ending almost 70 years of the newspaper / magazine being a weekly publication. The title will continue online and Music Week have announced that a monthly "deluxe" version of the magazine will still be printed but I can't see this being a long-term proposition. A weekly Chart Pack will continue to be published and will be available only to subscribers. The Chart Pack has been published for around a decade and contains the main OCC charts as well as the chart analysis for Singles and Albums.

My local Asda still hasn't got Evermore - even though they've got McCartney III. I suspect somebody will wake up and release they have to order it. Or maybe the suppliers haven't sent it yet? Do any supermarkets have it?

EDIT: just looked up Tesco and Sainsburys - they both seem to have stopped selling music during the current situation. Or at least stopped selling it online.
Asda just have a limited "best-seller chart". Neither Evermore or even Folklore are on it. Which is crazy!

Thanks Robbie for confirming that Levitating got a reset. Looks like it wouldn't really have been no.1 by the end of the week if it hadn't been reset anyway now as Little Mix' lead is growing and it really will be no.1 - unlike the same time last year....!

Gerry and the Pacemakers singer Gerry Marsden, whose version of You'll Never Walk Alone became a football terrace anthem for his hometown club of Liverpool, has died at the age of 78.

His family said on Sunday he died after a short illness not linked to Covid-19.

Marsden's band was one of the biggest success stories of the Merseybeat era, and in 1963 became the first to have their first three songs top the chart.

The second of those was Ferry Cross The Mersey, written by Marsden.

Marsden was made an MBE in 2003 for services to charity after supporting victims of the Hillsborough disaster.

Omg, come on Wham - I would be delighted if they finally make it!

I think this could conceivably be their last chance, as I feel that the OCC might make changes to the chart next year in view of the madness that has been this week’s chart.

Can Wham! finally make No.1 with Last Christmas?

    by Andre Paine

    December 31st 2020 at 10:21AM

Mariah Carey has done it. And now Wham! could be about to repeat her trick of taking a Christmas classic to No.1.

Last Christmas (Sony CG) could finally reach a new peak at the top of the charts on Friday (January 1). The single (actually a double A-side with Everything She Wants) by George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley was famously held off the top spot by Band Aid for five weeks during December 1984.

In the Midweek sales flash, the beloved ’80s pop duo were just 89 sales behind Mariah Carey, who was on 34,888 by the end of Tuesday (Official Charts Company).

All I Want For Christmas Is You is attempting a return to the summit after LadBaby usurped Carey’s hit on Christmas Day. Carey’s festive favourite has already earned two weeks at No.1 and is chasing a third non-consecutive week at the top.

Crucially, though, Wham! have sales momentum. As festive streaming continues in late December, Last Christmas’ sales were up 11.2% week-on-week compared to 4.5% for Mariah Carey by the end of Tuesday. Wham! could now have pulled ahead of their chart rival.

Wham!’s last No.1 single was The Edge Of Heaven in 1986. The duo had four No.1s between 1984 and 1986.

Last Christmas has so far spent eight non-consecutive weeks at No.2 since 1984.
