Metallica Has Half of the Week’s Top 10 Best-Selling Albums
                  By Keith Caulfield
                  2/10/2021

Plus: Grateful Dead, Weezer and "Now 77" debut in top 10.

Metallica holds five of the top 10 best-selling albums of the week in the U.S., as reflected on Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart (dated Feb. 13). It’s the first time since 2016 that one act has five out of the top 10 on the tally.

Metallica jumps 67-3, while the group notches re-entries with Ride the Lightning (No. 4), …And Justice for All (No. 5), Master of Puppets (No. 7) and Kill ‘Em All (No. 8), respectively. The takeover is owed to the band's release of six of its earlier albums on limited edition color vinyl via Walmart on Jan. 29.

Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart ranks the top-selling albums of the week based only on traditional album sales. The chart’s history dates back to May 25, 1991, the first week Billboard began tabulating charts with electronically monitored piece count information from SoundScan, now MRC Data. Pure album sales were the measurement solely utilized by the Billboard 200 albums chart through the list dated Dec. 6, 2014, after which that chart switched to a methodology that blends album sales with track equivalent album units and streaming equivalent album units.

Here’s a look at Metallica’s five albums in the top 10 on Top Album Sales, along with a sixth that missed the region, but is at No. 15. Nearly all of the sales for each title are from their vinyl editions.

Title; Rank; Total Copies Sold on All Formats (Gain)

                  Metallica; No. 3; 10,000 (up 383%)
Ride the Lightning; No. 4; 9,700 (up 617%)
                  …And Justice for All; No. 5; 9,400 (up 776%)
Master of Puppets; No. 7; 8,100 (up 1,102%)Kill ‘Em All; No. 8; 8,000 (up 917%)
                  Hardwired… To Self-Destruct; re-entry at No. 15; 5,500 (up 2,433%)

The last act to have five of the top 10 on Top Album Sales was Prince, following his death in 2016, when he claimed half of the region on the list dated May 14, 2016.

Metallica also has six of the top 10 on the Feb. 13-dated Vinyl Albums chart – the third time an act has held six of the top 10. It previously happened on March 19, 2016 (David Bowie) and Dec. 1, 2012 (The Beatles).

Back on the Top Album Sales chart, Morgan Wallen’s Dangerous: The Double Album is steady at No. 1 for a third nonconsecutive week, with 25,000 sold (up 102%).

Grateful Dead’s Dave’s Picks, Volume 37: College of William & Mary, Williamsburg, VA debuts at No. 2 (21,000). On the Billboard 200, the new Dead set starts at No. 19 – the group’s 105th entry and highest charting set since 2014’s Dave’s Picks Volume 10: Thelma, Los Angeles, CA: 12/12/69 debuted and peaked at No. 17 on the May 17, 2014-dated chart.

Weezer’s new album OK Human bows at No. 6 on Top Album Sales with 9,000 sold, marking the band’s 12th top 10 on the tally. Weezer’s first top 10 came with its second self-titled set (also known as the green album) nearly 20 years ago, on the June 2, 2001-dated list (where it debuted and peaked at No. 4).

The Now 77 hits compilation starts at No. 9 on Top Album Sales with 8,000 sold – the best opening sales week for a Now That’s What I Call Music album since Now 73 bowed with 11,000 (Feb. 8, 2020 chart).

Harry Styles’ Fine Line closes out the top 10, falling 3-10 with 8,000 (down 1%).

                      Catalog Albums/Billboard 200 Chart Update – February 13, 2021

Metallica Blitz! Top 6 Selling Catalog Albums

Metallica scores the top six selling catalog albums of the week, five of which place in the top 10 of the Top Album Sales chart. The albums with their years of release and TAS rankings this week are: Metallica (1991, #3); Ride The Lightning (1984, #4); …And Justice For All (1988, #5); Master Of Puppets (1986, #7); Kill ‘Em All (1983, #8); and Hardwired… To Self-Destruct (2016, #15). Vinyl editions lead the way, as Metallica also secure the top five albums, and six of the top seven, on the Vinyl Albums chart. Ride The Lightning leads the way there.

This marks the sixteenth time that Metallica has gotten three or more of the top selling Catalog albums going back to 1991. Seven times between June and August 1996, Ride The Lightning, Master Of Puppets, and …And Justice For All were together in the top 10; these three were joined by Metallica for a week in June 2003; Master Of Puppets, …And Justice For All, and Metallica made the top 10 together in September 2008; the same set of three had top 10 weeks together in late 2015 and early 2016; the first week of May 2016 saw Kill ‘Em All, Ride The Lightning, and Metallica reach the top 10 together; and for three more weeks in the spring of 2017 (on the Catalog Sales chart only), …And Justice For All and Metallica were joined by Master Of Puppets for one of the weeks, and Ride The Lightning for the other two. At no time during those previous 15 occasions did the group ever get both of the top two spots, or any more than two of the top five in the same week.

This week marks the first time that any artist has swept the top six selling catalog albums since after the death of Prince in the spring of 2016. The Artist swept the top 10 on May 14, and had the top six on one other occasion (May 28). Tom Petty came close, getting the top five on October 21, 2017 after his death; and Tool also swept the top five catalog sellers on August 17, 2019. Besides Metallica, Prince, Tom Petty, and Tool, only two artist have swept the top five selling catalog albums in a single week: Michael Jackson, who did it for 10 straight weeks starting July 18, 2009 following his death; and The Beatles, who did it on Sept. 26, 2009. Only Metallica, Prince, and Michael Jackson have ever been able to sweep the top six.

Other superlatives from Metallica’s week at the top: Four of the albums gain a new high for their rank in album sales (Metallica and Hardwired… To Self-Destruct were #1 albums at their original release). Ride The Lightning, at #4, peaked only at #100 BB200 on its original release (eventually making #48 in 2016 as a catalog album), and had not previously been higher than #22 TAS. …And Justice For All re-enters at #5, one position higher than its original BB200 peak, and also higher than its previous TAS peak of #12. Master Of Puppets (#7) peaked at #29 BB200 on its original release, and had previously reached #13 on TAS. Kill ‘Em All (#8) originally peaked at #120 BB200, made #66 BB200 as a catalog album in 2016, and had been only as high as #27 on TAS… The Metallica album surges to #38 BB200, its best position on the Billboard 200 or its predecessor, Top Comprehensive Albums, in 472 weeks of charting as a catalog album from 2004 to the present. Its previous best catalog position was #51… Ride The Lightning reaches a new catalog sales peak at #2, and Kill ‘Em All scores a new peak at #5, in both cases besting their previous peak by one position… Metallica is only the second artist to place five catalog albums in the same week’s TAS top 10. Prince also did it on May 14, 2016 with The Very Best Of Prince (#2), Purple Rain (Soundtrack) (Prince & The Revolution – #3), The Hits / The B-Sides (#4), Ultimate (#5), and 1999 (#6)… Metallica is the second artist with six different catalog albums reaching the TAS top 10, with The $5.98 EP: Garage Days Re-Revisited reaching #7 on April 28, 2018. The other is Prince, who in addition to the five albums mentioned from 2016, reached the TAS top 10 with Sign ‘O’ The Times (#7) in October of last year... Only Michael Jackson (34) and The Beatles (20) have more weeks with 3 or more albums in the catalog sales top 10 than the 16 weeks for Metallica.

Staying at #1 for a third straight week on the Catalog chart is Queen’s Greatest Hits, climbing six spots to #36 BB200. Metallica’s Metallica re-enters the chart at #3, but it’s the only Metallica album in the Catalog top 10 this week.

                      MIG’S MILESTONES
Creedence Clearwater Revival, Chronicle – #9 Cat, #62 BB200, #17 CS (#43 TAS) – Spends its 200th week in the top 10 of the Catalog chart, only the tenth album to do so.
Adele, 21 – #173 BB200 – Reaches the half-millennium mark, week #500, on the Billboard 200 overall. The album was released in March 2011, first left the BB200 in late 2017, and has been on since then except for a handful of weeks, including a 13-week stretch in 2018.
Kanye West, Graduation – #148 BB200 – Reaches 150 weeks overall among the top 200 albums(*).
Fleetwood Mac, Greatest Hits – #4 Cat, #48 BB200, #29 CS (#61 TAS) – Spends its 600th week on the Catalog chart, the 12th album to reach that milestone. It has 688 weeks on the catalog sales top 50, but it’s only ranked #29 there this week, versus #4 Catalog.
(*) = Total includes Comprehensive chart weeks from late 2003 – late 2009.

                      NEW ON THE CHARTS
Pitbull, Greatest Hits – #197 BB200 – Kind of an oddity, but this December 2017 compilation finally makes the BB200 over three years later. Pitbull has only made the BB200 with one previous catalog album, Global Warming, for a single week at #172 in 2015; he still hasn’t made the Catalog or catalog sales charts with any album.
PJ Harvey, Is This Desire? – #28 CS (#59 TAS) – Harvey’s fifth charting catalog sales album, all since the beginning of last year. This 1998 release reached #54 BB200 in a four-week run.
Paul Chambers Quartet, Bass On Top – #33 CS (#68 TAS) – The first of two Blue Note re-releases to debut on this week’s chart, a 1957 release originally. Chambers (1935-1969), as the album title suggests, was a jazz double bassist who was only 33 when he died of complications from tuberculosis.
Lee Morgan, The Rajah – #36 CS (#71 TAS) – Jazz trumpeter Morgan (1939-1972) recorded this album in 1966 but it was wasn’t released until 1985. Morgan tragically died of a gunshot wound, also at age 33.

WANDERING STARS – Reserved for long-absent albums returning to the charts:
(Note: List will only include albums returning after a year or more, for first three months of 2021)
Metallica, Ride The Lightning, …And Justice For All, Master Of Puppets and Kill ‘Em All – #11, 14, 27, 37 Cat; #64, 70, 94, 107 BB200; #2, 3, 4, 5 CS (#4, 5, 7, 8 TAS) – All of these albums return to the BB200 and Catalog chart after more than a year’s absence. [colror=red]Kill ‘Em All[/color] last appeared in 2016 on both charts; Ride The Lightning last appeared in 2017 on both charts; Master Of Puppets last appeared in 2017 on the Catalog chart and 2018 on the BB200; and …And Justice For All last appeared in 2018 on both charts.
Metallica, Hardwired… To Self-Destruct – #6 CS (#15 TAS) – Returns to the catalog sales and TAS charts for the first time since 2019, but does not return to the Catalog chart or BB200.
Lady Gaga, Born This Way – #45 CS (#86 TAS) – First appearance on catalog sales since 2017, the year of her Super Bowl halftime appearance.

CATALOG NOTES – Parenthetical numbers are weeks in the top 10 followed by 2021 weeks in the top 10:
On Catalog Sales/TAS: Metallica score six top 10 returns at the top six spots, led by Metallica (1991) (474/1), jumping 34-1 (also the week’s biggest climb), along with returns to the chart at positions #2 through #6… Each of the following albums reaches the top 10 for the first time in 2021: Ride The Lightning (11th top 10 week overall); …And Justice For All (83); Master Of Puppets (72); Kill ‘Em All (2); and Hardwired… To Self-Destruct (7)… A seventh album returns to the top 10 as Queen’s Greatest Hits (172/5) jumps 14-9… Among last week’s top 10 albums, The Beatles’ Abbey Road (111/6) ends a 10-week top 10 run, Kendrick Lamar’s good kid, m.A.A.d city (33/6) ends a six-week top 10 run, and Seatbelts’ Cowboy Bebop (Soundtrack) (1/1) leaves the top 50 entirely after reaching #9 last week… Nirvana’s Nevermind (19/1) leaves the catalog sales listing after a 43-week run… Khalid’s American Teen ends a 10-week run.
On Catalog/BB200: Some variation in the top 10 this week, as Metallica’s Metallica (342/1) re-enters at #3, and Fleetwood Mac’s Greatest Hits (88/1) comes in at #4. These displace Journey’s Greatest Hits (574/4) after a four-week top 10 run, and Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours, which, victimized by a sales shift to the hits album, leaves the top 10 after a five week run and also sees an 83 week run on the Catalog chart come to an abrupt end… The largest in-chart jump of the week goes to Rihanna’s ANTI, climbing 36-29.

TOP CATALOG ALBUMS WITH NO TOP 10 WEEKS IN 2021 / NO TOP 10 WEEKS EVER – Numbers in parentheses are overall chart weeks, overall top 10 weeks, weeks on chart in 2021, overall peak position, 2021 peak position, current position. If the top album with no 2021 top 10 weeks is the same as the album with no top 10 weeks overall, only one is shown:
Catalog Sales: Prince & The Revolution, Purple Rain (Soundtrack) (236/32/7/#1/#11/#15)
                      Mac Miller, Swimming (10/0/7/#20/#20/#26)
Catalog: Metallica, Ride The Lightning (467/9/1/#5/#11/#11)
                      Ed Sheeran, % (Divide) (8/0/6/#11/#11/#15)
