  • I stand by that statement completely. The selling of a record at 50p would be all on the record company. The 50p would be profit for the store as they got it for free. At that price they probably didn't have to sell any others at full retail price anyway.
And yes the record companies would take into account how many stores they needed to supply just on the general level. Record shops would be reluctant to buy copies from a record company who could not supply them with copies they wanted.
Where do you think the record shops got the numbers of records they would order from? Looking into a crystal ball? The record company staff went around telling people in the shops this record would sell loads.
There's only one recorded case (that I know of) of the owner of a shop saying what's going to be a hit and even he was listening to records sent out by a record company. That man was so good the staff at the record company knew then they had a hit and told the rest of the reps to promote only those records. He was that good that when he went to EMI and said I've got a band called The Beatles they took him serious!

    • GM76 - so if your Mr. Heinz, you calculate how many shops there are in the country and simply manufacture and distribute the number of cans accordingly even though they are already over-stocked and can't shift them because austerity, inflation, pandemic-causing furlough (and non-furlough) etc. has caused people to move to own brand baked beans?

You ignore the sell by date and the unsold tins that are coming back from the stores and just keep working out the number of shops in the country and keep supplying them regardless?!

That won't please your shareholders very much...

Basic economics of over supply is a race to zero value. If any Beatles record is pressed up to the tune (lol) of ten times its actual physical purchase (your own 'Free As A Bird' example) then it becomes worthless to everyone. Not the music, you understand, just the price you can charge for it at every stage of the 'food' chain.

Are you a Keynsian by any chance?

      • These days nobody has to calculate the amount of stock, it's already done by computers. Most of the supermarkets are indeed over stocking even under this system. A great deal of waste is either given away to food banks or disposed of at landfill. Amazon have recently being criticised for dumping items too.
You don't even no much about tinned Baked Beans. They don't have a sell buy date, just a best before date. As long as the tin doesn't have a hole in it the beans will last years. Many shoppers are ignorant on the dates put on food. Only a use by date is the one you shouldn't go past. The rest are perfectly safe unless the seal or tin is damaged. They might not taste as good after the best before date depending on how long. But they will be fine.

It's rare that any records were pressed or made beyond a certain limit. In the case of that Beatles track I would expect a first run of at least 600,000. All of which my sources say sold. And subsequent runs were thus needed. Selling the numbers I quoted.
Now you can believe it or not. If you report 300,000 sales you will get clobbered by a Government who wants to spend money on anything they want, but not on what you want. But if you report two million sales, you will be hit really hard. More than the smaller figures of sales.
Even these days things haven't changed and the government spent millions of pounds on the studio so Boris can tell us to stay at home, but not pay the people who care for those sick.
If you were a record company making millions would you let it all go to pay for a billion pound railway so people can get to London quicker to see the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace?

        • I have removed some posts from this topic. Can I remind everybody that we are supposed to stay on topic and the odd little silliness is fine in moderation, but not when taken too far. Thank you.

            16 July 2021
            Official Top 40 best-selling singles of 1998

Some of the biggest songs of the year included Believe by Cher, Celine Dion's My Heart Will Go On and C'est La Vie by B'Witched.

            By George Griffiths
It's exceedingly rare for an artist to return from a period in the commercial doldrums with a record-breaking Number 1 single, let alone nearly 30 years into their career. But in 1998, Cher proved once and for all that she was not most artists. To the rules, she was always an exception.

But Believe could never have been made in any other year than 1998, and it couldn't have been released by anyone other than Cher. Taking the fairly new technology of AutoTune, it seemed to rejoice in stretching Cher's iconic, deep voice into the realms of absurdity. The perfect fit, really, for a song that's about learning to love yourself after you've been left alone and changed by someone.

Believe proved to be revelatory for Cher, who was 52 at the time of its release. Debuting atop the Official Singles Chart and stayed at Number 1 for a total of seven weeks and is still her best-selling single in the UK today.

With sales totalling over 1.5 million copies (1.8 million overall), Believe was the UK's best-selling single of 1998 - and the first song by a female solo artist to be certified Tripe Platinum. It also holds the distinction of being the highest-selling single by a female act - ever - on the Official Charts.

Now that's what you call a comeback.

Meanwhile, taking second place is a little-known song from a little-known film by a little-known singer. Celine Dion's My Heart Will Go On helped Titanic become (at the time at least) the highest-grossing film of all time, and its reception on the Official Singles Chart also reflects that, it also reached Number 1 and stayed at the top for two weeks and shifted 1.3m that year.

In third is Jason Nevins' remix of Run DMC's It's Like That, on 1.09m. The rework of the hip-hop classic was hugely popular across Europe before its UK release, helping it soar to the top spot and achieve the unthinkable: breaking Spice Girls' run of Number 1 hits as their single Stop was forced to settle for second place.

Two Irish acts also made a massive impact on the charts in 1998. Boyband Boyzone continued their dominance with their cover Whistle Down The Wind's No Matter What becoming their fourth UK Number 1 and the fourth most popular song of the year (1.07m).

But it was the girls that came out on top that year. Seen as many to be the natural successors to Spice Girls, B'Witched made a massive impression with the most entires in the year-end Top 40, with three. They include debut single C'est La Vie (5, 851k), Rollercoaster (21) and To You I Belong (33), all of which peaked at Number 1.

Elsewhere in the Top 10, Chef, a character from South Park made a punt for Christmas Number 1 with Chocolate Salty Balls (PS I Love You) but still manages to place seventh at the years-end (682k). That year's actual Christmas Number 1 was Spice Girls with Goodbye (680k). Their third consecutive Christmas Number 1 single, they became the first act to earn the accolade since The Beatles - a feat that was also equalled last year by LadBaby. Another Spice Number 1 that year, Viva Forever, lands at Number 13.

            • I always thought that whoever wrote Rollercoaster pinched the song from the 70's kids TV series The Double Deckers.
Cher stayed at number one for ages, because nobody else released anything good. As soon as somebody finally did, it was off the top spot.

              • Wow none of those songs from 31-40 got a look in on the "other songs" parts of the show this week. Justice for T-Spoon! Where was Ray Of Light btw?

I've also got 1994, 1995 and 1996 but there are big differences between those charts and the ones published recently by the OCC. The differences are due to the charts being based on sales figures from the time (using panel sales / multipliers) rather than DUS.

shouldn't the chart peak for that year (1998) be [2]? OCC site made this error as well. As the TV show said, it didn't get to number 1 til new year 99.

I think it showed no.2 on the show.

Anyone know if this will continue into the 00's as there was an 80s series before this one?

Definitely number 1 as it was number 1 based on the last sales week of the 1998 chart year (27/12/98 to 02/01/99, chart dated 09/01/99). The confusion is caused by the chart being published / announced in, and dated to, 1999.

There's not much difference in 1999 either. However in 2000 sales fell back quite sharply and then went into freefall from 2001. By 2005 the physical singles market was pretty much dead.

1999 saw the arrival of a popstar for who global domination would be instant: Britney Spears.

The former child star of Disney TV show The Mickey Mouse Club, Britney soon grew up in front of our very eyes, starting out with the undeniable classic ...Baby One More Time. Aided by a deliciously cheeky music video, the track stormed in at Number 1 in February, scoring 463,722 sales in its opening week, and finished the year on 1.45 million sales to be the UK's best-selling single of 1999.

The Max Martin-produced track kick-started a new ultra-slick style of pop from the US that would also earn Number 1 success in the UK for Backstreet Boys (May chart-topper I Want It That Way ranks 35th), and later *NSync and Pink.

Britney's follow-up single Sometimes - also released that year - wasn't quite the runaway hit of its predecessor, peaking at Number 3, but still places at 34 on the end-of-year Top 40. View Britney's Official UK Chart history in full here.

1999 also saw the rise of Europop dominating the airwaves and charts. Italian dance group Eiffel 65 scored the year's second best-selling track with three-week Number 1 Blue (956k), German DJ ATB ranks fifth with summer smash 9pm (Til I Come) (791k), French musician Mr Oizo is at 9 with Flat Beat (678k) (a Number 1 thanks to its use in a Levi's advert), and Dutch outfit Alice Deejay land just outside the Top 10 at 12 with Better Off Alone.

Another act waving the flag four Europop that year was Vengaboys, who claim three entries in the end-of-year Top 40: Number 1s Boom, Boom, Boom, Boom!! (15) and We're Going To Ibiza! (38), while Top 3 smash We Like To Party! (The Vengabus) places at 29.

Latin-inspired music was also on the rise in 1999, including Lou Bega's two-week Number 1 Mambo No.5 (A Little Bit Of...), the year's fourth best-seller (850k), and Ricky Martin's Livin' La Vida Loca at 6 (776k), which spent three weeks at the top in July.

Elsewhere, UK outfit Shanks & Bigfoot place at Number 8 with Sweet Like Chocolate (707k), the UK's first garage Number 1 in May, while several British pop acts scored big: S Club 7 with their first release Bring It All Back (11), former Eastenders star Martine McCutcheon topped the chart with her debut single Perfect Moment (14), and Steps with their first chart-topper Heartbeat/Tragedy (19).

Finally, plenty of US stars also enjoyed UK success in 1999, including Christina Aguilera with her debut effort Genie In A Bottle (13), R&B trio TLC scored a long-running Top 40 hit with No Scrubs (16) and Whitney Houston enjoyed two sizeable hits with My Love Is Your Love (22), and It's Not Right, But It's Okay (25).

The OCC have overlooked 'The Millennium Prayer' by Cliff Richard (861k) and 'When The Going Gets Tough' by Boyzone (671k).

1999 not only marked the end of the 20th Century (unless you believe it ended on 31 December 2000) but it also marked the end of the singles boom. Singles sales fell back a bit in 1999 but the top 20 still sold 500k+ for the second year in a row. Singles sales were subdued in 2000 and then fell off a cliff. By the time downloads were finally incorporated into the singles chart in April 2005 the physical singles market was in terminal decline.

The number 40 sold 380k, higher than 1998. The top 87 sold 200k+, down from 97 in 1998. The number 100 ('In Our Lifetime' by Texas) sold 181k.

                                          • Sadly, 1999 appears to be the last year in the series. It would have been nice for Channel 5 to have continued into the 2000s. Perhaps they will, but not at present. Next Friday the channel is broadcasting "1988: Britain's Top 30 Hits". It's marked as a new programme rather than a repeat of the 1988 Britain's Biggest Hits programme.

                                            • ^ yes, it's 3 hours long so it must be the songs are being played in full. So a revised extended repeat judging by the description?

This is a split single. Buffalo Tom on their own, Liam and Steve on their own.

                                              • The Madonna song from the Austin Power's movie is another that doesn't feature in the actual movie at all. I watched it the other day on one of the freeview channels and there was no Madonna track on it at all. Even at the end!!
Whereas the Ronan Keating track does feature. Don't understand what that bloke was on about it not fitting the movie. In the scene it features they are sat on the bench, like Ronan does in the video, saying nothing at all!
Cliff's video is now rare. Last time I searched for it on YouTube they only had one that someone had recorded off one of the MTV type channels. You couldn't get the proper video at all.
The Shania Twain song is now famous for being in the most misheard lyrics of all time category. The line being "I can't believe you kiss your car at night". But most hear "car" as being the male organ! PS I had to say that I don't want the censor lobby on here giving me 20 points for words as common as muck again.
