  • Top Pops and Music Now Weekly Charts

Now for the "Holy Grail" of "other" Top 30 singles charts. They will be added, incrementally, in a manner similar to threads about Melody Maker's 1970's and '80's charts (with comparisons between NME and BMRB then Gallup added thereon, plus whatever was not listed in a week's Top 30). The corresponding positions in New Musical Express (NME), Melody Maker (MM), and Record Retailer (RR) up to 08 February 1969 and BMRB (carried by RR) after 15 February, will be shown in the line below a record's TP and MN chart position.

Let me start with the first two charts (biweekly, thus two weeks of "other" charts per TP chart included):
DISCLAIMER: Any wrong title or artist credit is on TP / TP&MN / MN. In some extreme cases [sic] will be put on.

What were Top Pop and Music Now? Did they compile their own charts?
I can't seem to find info on them.

Top Pops was a publication that, beginning in 1968, began their own compiled chart sampling up to 12 stores in the WH Smith's chain. It changed names twice, to Top Pops/Music Now on 27 September 1969, and Music Now on 21 March 1970. The Number Ones are already chronicled here and on Wikipedia.

Thanks. I couldn't find it on Wiki as i was looking for "Top Pop" as stated in the title, not Top Pops. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Top_Pops_(newspaper)

Mysterious how that poster Robin was promising almost all the charts in 2019 but never followed up on it. Hope he's OK.

I, in a sense, am fulfilling that promise. In some cases where charts are missing (i.e. 27 July 1968) I hope to reconstruct as best as possible based on the next week's chart - and if others have access to that chart, fill in the blanks.

Robin still posts at ukmix, mainly in the Ultimate Averaged Chart thread at the moment. He did post the charts, or at least I think he must have done, as I have them as PDFs on my computer with a download date of 06/05/21. It's possible they were posted as links in the thread I have just mentioned.

Edit: found the post, it was in the above thread. It contains a link to the Top Pop charts https://www.ukmix.org/forum/chart-di...2#post10618972

I checked and corrected all the dates for the Top Pops charts then posted them all in my Dropbox. The link for this is in my Ultimate Average Chart thread.

31-Aug-68 is the week of the infamous 3-way tie at number one in the BBC chart. I believe that Dave Taylor was coming round to the view that the Bee Gees were the rightful number one, if the notes on the BBC chart list were his last words on the subject.

We differ a bit there in our view Splodj. The info Dave gave me based on information he had from further sampling from EMI (who compiled an averaged chart but then conducted additional store sampling on top of this for their own use) indicated Herb Alpert to be ahead of the Bee Gees and the Beach Boys. Although Dave suspected that the Bee Gees were joint #1 on RR that week there has never been conclusive evidence from RR to uphold this. To date the official record shows the Bee Gees at NME 2, MM 3, and RR 2. Given that it was not ranked at #1 on any chart it is therefore dubious it could later be awarded this accolade.

Interesting how far apart the three titles that tied at number 1 on the POTP chart are on the Top Pops chart (numbers 1, 4 and 6). I think the Top Pops chart had a very small sample though or am I thinking of another chart? And no, I don't mean Record Retailer!

Top Pops was solely a W. H. Smith chart Robbie based on or around just 12 of their stores.

Yes he also says that on this site when discussing the EMI chart. But I thought his comments on the BBC chart file represented a change of view, assuming they were made later. (I know he was not the sole compiler, but these comments have his trademark 'should of' for 'should have'.)

The Real Chart resolved that weeks ago. The Bee Gees were top with 163,000. The other contenders were not even close to the second place, which was Amen Corner! (6,000 less). Beach Boys were three down from one (8,000 less). Tom Jones was at five, it's highest slot (74,000 less) and Herb was down from 4 to 8 (103,000 less).

He did post the charts, or at least I think he must have done, as I have them as PDFs on my computer with a download date of 06/05/21. It's possible they were posted as links in the thread I have just mentioned.

Hey all, I'm very much alive and well, ha, just too busy for my own good, ugh. Regarding the TP/MN charts, I did make an effort to collect them all, and with HUGE thanks to Alan Smith, Lonnie, and Kjell, we found all of them except 2. I started to work out the kinks, as some of the chart scans and copies were somewhat of a mess, and the dates given (or hand written on them) did not match up with the number of weeks. Plus there were skipped weeks where TP/MN didn't publish an issue/chart. Back then, I didn't have enough spare time to sort it all out. Meanwhile, I had sent all the charts to Brian/Mr. Tibbs, and thankfully he dropboxed them for all of us, and had worked out all the correct dates and issues with our collective assembled available information. I independently worked my way thru them as well, and came out exactly with what Brian had put together. I hope that ChartAfondicio is in agreement with us, ha.

I should also say the list of TP/MN #1's as posted in the thread by Alan has a bug for 1970. And the Wiki list has 3 bugs, 1 each for 1969, 70, and 71. So Brian's dropbox file has the correct #1's.

I don't recall if I posted the following info, but I had sent this to Lonnie, Kjell, and Brian. Alan sadly is missing in action, hasn't posted here, nor responded to my emails, in 2 years. Come back Alan, we miss you !!! This is a summary of what is known about the TP/MN charts we have (in Brian's dropbox):

                                            ----------------

                                            15 May 2021
                                            Brian,

I’m done with checking TP/MN for 1968, and I think everything you have is correct. You done good !! I checked the last week positions, Alan’s penciled in issue #’s, and compared the discrepancies of TP/MN missing charts against NME, and to the best of my observations (which were relatively good but not crazy overly thorough) all your dates line up as they are, no changes necessary.

So to sum up the irregularities for 1968:

--BIWEEKLY: Alan’s language about the 2 early biweekly issues (inferring no published weekly charts between or after them) was not completely clear, and has confused some (most?) of us (me). While the 25 May 1968 and 8 June 1968 issues/charts were biweekly (as in 2 weeks since the previous issue), the evidence indicates they went to weekly publishing beginning 15 June, NOT on 22 June as Alan told us. So there is only 1 not published weekly issue/chart in there = 1 June, and the heretofore assumed not published issue/chart for 15 June was indeed published, and we’ve had it all along.

--MISSING: the 27 July 1968 chart/issue #31 is missing from our stash, but we can recreate most of it from the next issue’s last week positions.

--NO HOLIDAY ISSUE: the 28 Dec 1968 issue/chart appears not to have been published due to the holidays. This is new news to me, but this is what the evidence indicates, from last week positions, Alan’s penciled in issue #’s, and vs. NME.

So for the above 2 unpublished weeks, Alan froze the “weeks at #1” in his thread.

I expect, Brian, you’re right about 1969 to 1971 as well.

Most of 27 July has been taken care of. It's now a matter of taking care of the rest. ;-) What's been a challenge is some of the lo-res scans that look like faxes, especially figuring out some of 27 July's positions on the 03 August chart. I notice they don't mention if a blacked-out number is a new entry or re-entry. I've been learning, though. ;-) I also noticed something about the delineation between the TP and MN eras insofar as the typesetting for the charts. But this is not the only paper to change titles in mid-stream. Same thing happened in the U.S. in 1964 when Music Vendor changed its name to Record World. (Ironically, up to 1970 their chart was called "100 Top Pops," afterwards it was changed to "The Singles Chart.")
