  • I just remembered that when Brian, Robin and I were trying to find all Top Pops / Music Now charts I registered five NON-Guinness hits. Today I’ve looked thru’ my notes of yesteryear and they say that The good, the bad and the ugly by Leroy Holmes (No 29 on 68 Oct 26) and Skinhead moon stomp by Symarip (entry 69 Dec 13) were also NON-Guinness hits. In fact I myself discovered only one of the two, another of this sites contributers found the other. That of course doesn’t change the fact that this thread is quite enjoyable. Thanks for doing this Afondicio.

      • I knew about the Leroy Holmes hit in NME. If you look into the Guinness book you will not find it there. I admit that I didn’t know Moonstomp charted in Guinness more than a decade later. However, it was not a hit in Guinness when Top Pops / Music Now was at large, so according to my train of thought it was a NON-Guinness hit in 69.

On the other hand, I find it right that you enlighten me and other chart fans of things we didn’t know.

Are these catalogue number and track listing correct for this chart entry? The catalogue numbers and tracklisting match a US promo release called 'Excerpts From Tommy' https://www.discogs.com/The-Who-Exce...elease/3917054

There is also a UK release (catalogue number Track 2252 001) which seems to have been given the informal title of 'Excerpts From Tommy' though that exact title doesn't appear on the record https://www.discogs.com/The-Who-Tommy/release/3343004 https://www.45cat.com/record/2252001

The UK release date ties in with its Music Now chart entry. This release is listed on the Breakers list in Record Retailer for 9 January 1971 under the title 'Overture/Christmas/I'm Free' (though I'm Free is listed as I Am Free).

It might have been a US Import before the UK Release?

but saying that the EP was released in UK in November 1970

            Probably a typo error?

            Anyway updated the above

It was definitely meant to be educational, informative and instructive. The vast differences within the stores in the Smiths chain vs. all the others sampled within the other three charts is certainly highly interesting.

              • Postscript

At the time of Music Now's last-ever chart of 27 February, there were three new entries that, on the other three charts, would advance to varying positions. We will start with this, and then go to other charts descending to the beginning of the month, picking up the pace from 06 March (in format 21-13-8-5-3-2-4-8 etc., with each chart in a different paragraph, colour coded as always, peak position in underline).

                From 27 February 1971:
                ROSE GARDEN - Lynn Anderson
                NME - 9-7-3-3-2-3-4-5-13-19-21

                BMRB - 10-4-4-3-3-3-3-5-12-17-22-28-32-30-37-37-38-48

                BMRB - 19-12-18-13-26-30-40
                SWEET CAROLINE - Neil Diamond
                NME - 10-6-8-9-9-20-27
                MM - 10-7-7-6-11-14-23-29
                BMRB - 9-8-9-8-13-15-22-39

                From 20 February 1971:
                TOMORROW NIGHT - Atomic Rooster
                NME - 16-12-9-10-17-22-28
                MM - 18-13-10-8-12-18-28-43
                BMRB - 12-13-11-14-18-27-32-43
                CHESTNUT MARE - Byrds
                NME - 19-15-18-28-25-25

I THINK I LOVE YOU - Partridge Family
                NME - 17-21-25

                RUPERT - Jackie Lee
                NME - 20-30
                MM - 17-20-26-34-48
                BMRB - 14-27-20-36-31-44-45-46
("Rupert" had already reached peaks of #19 on NME and #16 on Melody Maker prior to 06 March; "I Think I Love You" had already peaked at #18 on BMRB.)

                From 13 February 1971:
SUNNY HONEY GIRL - Cliff Richard
                NME - 27
                MM - 25-33-36
                BMRB - 30-33
                BABY JUMP - Mungo Jerry

                BMRB - 1-1-2-4-5-10-13-32-37-42
FORGET ME NOT - Martha Reeves & The Vandellas
                NME - 14-14-14-26
                MM - 13-14-14-22-28-37
                BMRB - 11-15-25-29-43
("Sunny Honey Girl" had already reached peaks of #18 on both NME and Melody Maker, and #19 on BMRB, prior to 06 March; "Forget Me Not" had already peaked at #12 on NME.)

                From 06 February 1971:
27 (NE) - COME 'ROUND HERE I'M THE ONE YOU NEED - Smokey Robinson & The Miracles
                NME - 15-16-22
                MM - 11-17-20-31-43
                BMRB - 15-18-32-49
                28 (NE) - IT'S IMPOSSIBLE - Perry Como
                NME - 2-4-6-5-11-11-13-21
                MM - 3-3-6-5-6-8-10-19-22-29
                BMRB - 5-5-5-5-9-9-12-20-24-32-32-38-35-37-38-40-46-46
("Come 'Round Here I'm The One You Need" had already reached peaks of #11 on NME, and #13 on BMRB, prior to 06 March; "It's Impossible" had already peaked at #4 on BMRB.)

There was no need to further descend on that score. But this pretty much sews up the whole saga.

It does beg the question, though: Would a Music Now chart that lasted past 27 February have had "Rose Garden" at #1, if only for one week? "It's Impossible"?

                • It did indeed nudge to the top some records that didn't quite make it on the other charts, so I expect this pattern would have continued but there is no way of knowing which ones.

The thing I remember about "Its impossible" is a Ronnie Corbett sketch. He is at a party and the introduction to the record plays, he sits down to chat to an attractive lady and just as he opens his mouth the vocal kicks in!

The Who released two records from the Tommy Album during 1970. Both charted in the Real Chart.

See Me, Feel Me - Released 9 October 1970 on Track 2094 004 made number 42, but 45 Cat says the record was deleted - probably before the 1 November as it dropped from 42 to 56 and vanished. Nevertheless sufficient copies must have reached the shops for 35 Cat members to own it!
It was probably deleted to stop it interfering with the sales of the EP - released on the 6 November charting on the 15 and peaking at 20 on the 13 December.
Education for anyone aged 12 to 16 has made a mess of the world!

                    • Let us now turn our attention to the albums chart. At the outset of Top Pops' charts, there were 10 slots. As the number count increases (to a Top 20, and then a Top 30 by the time they changed names to Music Now), we will list accordingly when it happened. The first weekly chart only showed the singles, so whatever could be traced from the second album chart will be brought up. As there are few comparisons to other album charts on here (if there are any, please let us know; I know of at least one, Melody Maker's, within here), the cross-references on all the weekly singles charts will, pending further notice, not be on here. However, the same formatting will otherwise be held - TW (LW) positions, #1 albums in underline, and all titles and artists in bold. Unlike with the singles charts, each post will cover two months rather than one.

It's ongoing, but . . . I'd love as much as you to see how NME, MM and RR (as of this point; we're not yet into the BMRB era) LP charts stack up (sorry 'bout that) against these TP charts as have been unfolded thus far. I think around here there's a list of MM LP charts for the '70's . . .

                                        • Blodwyn Pig (at #4 on the charts dated 23 and 30 August 1969) were formed by ex-Jethro Tull member Mick Abrahams. Abrahams had left Jethro Tull after falling out with Tull vocalist Ian Anderson over the direction of the band. It looks like Ian Anderson was getting the last laugh here...

Hopefully these are at least readable enough to decipher the missing bits. They are all still currently on eBay, by the way, if anybody wants to go searching (Search for either music Now or Top Pops and selects 'Books Comics Magazines' as the category).

That 15 Nov 1969 chart is especially eye-opening. Namely, at the time TP&MN was carrying the Top 10's of U.S. Record World's charts - one of the few UK publications to do so. (Sadly, after becoming Music Now they switched their U.S. chart count to Cash Box.) Those positions corresponded to the 15 Nov chart of RW, per:
Barry's Hits of All Decades Pop rock n roll Music Chart Hits (Record World 1969 Charts)

All those have been duly saved to my computer, and I will be going by both. Hopefully the earlier charts will go forward to fill the gaps, many of which are very considerable, and likewise as you note.

The 05 July 1969 chart has been duly updated (and whatever could be recreated from 28 June) by this search method.
