Brands Bank on Live Music’s Return: ‘They’re Sick of Being on the Sidelines’

Fifteen days before a Notorious B.I.G. tribute concert starring Busta Rhymes, Lil’ Kim and others in Brooklyn, New York City changed the rules. Suddenly, music fans at concert venues had to show proof of vaccination — leading Budweiser, which hosted the show, to scramble to inform the 8,000 RSVPs.

Ad.Ventures Is Ready to Bring Big Branding Dollars to Venues

Steve Sternschein wants to help independent venues access the same brand dollars and sponsorship deals that usually go to major corporate promoters and venue operators.

Sofar Sounds Veteran Launches WithOthers, a Benefit Concert Matchmaker

In 2017, concert startup Sofar Sounds partnered with Amnesty International for “Give a Home,” a one-day benefit concert series with performances around the world by 1,000 artists including The National and Ed Sheeran. Held in volunteers’ living rooms and other intimate settings, the performances not only raised $180,000 for Amnesty International’s work supporting refugees’ rights, but left many attendees eager to become more involved in activism.

UMG’s Valuation Is Rising Fast Ahead of Public Listing — Here’s Why

In 2013, when the Japanese technology company Softbank offered to buy Universal Music Group for $8.5 billion, some analysts were surprised that UMG parent company Vivendi declined what was characterized as a generous offer. That was before the streaming boom. In late 2019, Chinese company Tencent Holdings agreed to buy up to 20% of UMG at a price that valued the music company at $33 billion, which seemed optimistic.

Inside Pop Radio’s Rock Revival: ‘The Industry Is Looking More Toward Guitars’

Måneskin’s “Beggin’” has been one of the most unlikely hit singles of the year, a rock cover of The Four Seasons’ 1966 soul-pop smash that the Italian quartet recorded in 2017 and watched go viral on TikTok years later. After crossing over to streaming platforms, the cover has taken off around the globe in recent months, peaking at No. 3 on the Global 200 and No. 29 on the Hot 100 so far.

Drake’s ‘Certified Lover Boy’ Credits R. Kelly, *NSYNC & The Beatles — But Who Gets What?

When Drake’s highly-anticipated sixth studio album Certified Lover Boy arrived Sept. 3, it came with a laundry list of features, interpolations and samples in its credits. Those included longtime collaborators like producer and engineer Noah “40” Shebib and OVO signee PARTYNEXTDOOR, as well as reappearances by old friends like former Young Money labelmates Lil Wayne and Nicki Minaj.

                          Catalog Albums/Billboard 200 Chart Update – September 18, 2021

Gaga Mia! Big Week for Lady Gaga, ABBA

Lady Gaga’s Born This Way returns to the charts at the #1 spot in catalog sales in the 10th anniversary year of its June 2011 release. Her second studio album and first to reach #1, it last appeared on the charts after her 2017 Super Bowl LII appearance, reaching #25 BB200 and #2 on both Catalog and Catalog Sales. It also returns to the BB200, but only at #162, outside of the top 50 ranked Catalog albums despite being #10 on the Top Album Sales chart. The album follows The Fame, which was #1 after the Super Bowl appearance, as her second album to lead the catalog sales tally.

Making a big move this week on all of the rankings is ABBA’s Gold – Greatest Hits, vaulting 11-2 on catalog sales, 33-11 on Top Album Sales, 30-3 on Catalog, and 114-34 on the BB200. The group’s first studio album in 40 years, Voyage, is due out in the first week of November. To date, they have not placed an album in the Billboard 200 top 10.

Still #1 on the Catalog chart for the 32nd time this year is Queen’s Greatest Hits, ranked at #22 BB200, eleven spots ahead of the runner-up. For the 24th time in 2021, the #2 Catalog album is Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours.

Is it too early for Christmas music? Evidently not, as Vince Guaraldi Trio’s A Charlie Brown Christmas (Soundtrack) returns to TAS at #39, and is #15 among catalog sellers. This is its earliest appearance for a new Christmas season. Time will tell if it remains on the chart all the way through January.

                          MIG’S MILESTONES
Khalid, American Teen – #140 BB200 – Reaches 50 weeks on the BB200 in catalog status, and 236 weeks overall. It was a #4 album in its release year of 2017, and has returned to #64 while in catalog status.
Whitney Houston, I Will Always Love You: The Best Of Whitney Houston – #146 BB200 – Also reaches 50 weeks on the BB200 in Catalog status, in the same week that it reaches a new high position on the BB200 in its catalog run. This album was released in 2012 after Houston’s passing and reached #14; it has been on the chart for 26 out of 38 weeks this year.

CATALOG NOTES – Parenthetical numbers are weeks in the top 10 followed by 2021 weeks in the top 10:
On Catalog Sales/TAS: This was an unusual week in that there were no debuting albums nor any albums returning for the first time in 2021 on the tally. There were still four re-entries in the top 10, led by Lady Gaga’s Born This Way (2/1) at the top spot, collecting its second top 10 week and first since February 25, 2017… Also returning to the top 10 are ABBA’s Gold – Greatest Hits (81/2) at #2, AC/DC’s Back In Black (179/7) at #8, and Prince & The Revolution’s Purple Rain (Soundtrack) (53/21) at #10… Guardians Of The Galaxy: Awesome Mix Vol. 1 drops 7-11 to leave the top 10 for the first time in 11 weeks. Also falling from the top 10 are George Harrison’s All Things Must Pass (11/4) after a four-week run including two weeks at #1; Nirvana’s Nevermind (20/2), falling 2-39 a week after a sizable jump into the top 10; and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young’s Déjà vu (3/3), falling out after returning at #3 last week… Metallica’s Ride The Lightning (12/2) has the largest jump this week at 39-21, extending its chart run to seven weeks.
On Catalog/BB200: Two albums with plenty of past top 10 experience rise into the top 10 of Catalog for the first time in 2021: ABBA’s Gold – Greatest Hits (58/1), with the largest rise on this week’s chart at 30-3; and Drake’s Take Care (126/1), up 11-9. It’s the first week in the top 10 since August 25, 2018 for the ABBA album and since February 8, 2020 for Drake…
Dropping from the top 10 are SZA’s Ctrl (32/27), falling 8-19, and Nirvana’s Nevermind (15/1), down 7-32… Khalid’s American Teen (1/1) falls from the Catalog chart after a 49 week run, even as it reaches 50 weeks on the BB200 in catalog status. It reached #10 during the run… Polo G’s Die A Legend falls from the BB200 after a 36 week run during which it reached #90.

TOP CATALOG ALBUMS WITH NO TOP 10 WEEKS IN 2021 / NO TOP 10 WEEKS EVER – Numbers in parentheses are overall chart weeks, overall top 10 weeks, weeks on chart in 2021, overall peak position, 2021 peak position, current position. If the top album with no 2021 top 10 weeks is the same as the album with no top 10 weeks overall, only one is shown:

Executive of the Week: BMG Senior VP Catalog Michael Kachko

This week, while the charts were being dominated by all things Drake following the release of his album Certified Lover Boy, another act was making history of their own. With the release of their 17th studio album, Senjutsu (Sanctuary/BMG), metal icons Iron Maiden smashed their way to No. 3 on the Billboard 200 with 64,000 equivalent album units (61,000 sales) -- the highest-charting album of the band’s long, illustrious career. It’s a significant feat for the British group, whose last two albums reached No. 4 on the Billboard 200 but which had otherwise only reached the chart's top 10 once in 2006. It’s a testament to both a longterm strategy set forth by its label and publisher BMG and to its committed fan base -- and it helps earn BMG senior vp catalog Michael Kachko the title of Billboard’s Executive of the Week.

Songwriters Organize New Guild to Take Bigger Piece Of Streaming Pie

In some ways, there has never been a better time to be a songwriter. The creators of pop hits enjoy a visibility they haven't had since before the singer-songwriter era, and companies like Hipgnosis Songs Fund, fueled by capital from outside the music industry, have helped create a thriving market for writer shares. The U.S. publishing business took in $4.08 billion last year, a nearly 10% rise over 2019, according to the National Music Publishers' Association, with the majority of that going to songwriters — whose deals, on average, let them take home 75% of the revenue their songs generate, according to NMPA president/CEO David Israelite.

Meet Universal Music Group's New Board of Directors

When Universal Music Group (UMG) makes its public listing Tuesday on the Euronext Amsterdam exchange, it will be guided by a global, 10-member board of directors that is 40% female and includes executives across a range of industries, from the brains behind the Mamma Mia! musical to the manager of the international Michelin Guide.
