    10 December 2021
Adele’s 30 reigns supreme on Official Albums Chart for third week at Number 1

JLS also gain this week's highest new entry with 2.0.
    By George Griffiths
Adele’s 30 reigns supreme on the Official Albums Chart this week, holding at Number 1 for a third week.

30 shifted over 73,000 chart sales in its third week on sale, comprised of 81% physical and digital download copies.

This week’s highest new entry is courtesy of boyband JLS, who debut at Number 4 with 2.0, their first album of original material in eight years. It becomes their sixth UK Top 10 collection.

Michael Buble’s Christmas rises into the Official Albums Chart Top 5 for the first time this year, while Andre Rieu and his Johan Strauss Orchestra enter the Top 10 with Happy Together, rising six places to Number 6. It’s now the celebrated Dutch composer’s 12th UK Top 10 album.

Following on from the news last week that Little Mix will enter an extended hiatus in 2022 to focus on solo careers, their greatest hits collection Between Us is up two to Number 7.

Meanwhile, just outside the Top 10 alt-pop band The Lottery Winners are a new entry at Number 11 with their third album Something To Leave The House For, their first Top 20 album and a career-best peak for them on the Official Albums Chart.

Following on from the release of a special boxset to celebrate its 30th anniversary, Nirvana’s iconic second album Nevermind is this week’s highest climber, breaking back into the Top 40 after vaulting 27 places to Number 24.

Further down, Dutch rock band Volbeat’s Servant of the Mind is straight in at Number 31, and finally Polo G’s Hall of Fame 2.0 debuts at Number 32. The collection is a deluxe, expanded edition of his recent album Hall of Fame which peaked at Number 3 upon its release earlier this year.

      Music Week Singles Report
      by Alan Jones

Friends since 2011, when the former signed to the latter’s management company as part of a joint venture, Ed Sheeran & Elton John’s first collaboration, Merry Christmas, debuts atop the singles chart this week (76,708 sales, including 14,055 download sales and 8,101 CDs), ending the seven-week reign of Adele’s Easy On Me (1-2, 53,072 sales). It is sweet revenge for John, as Easy On Me dethroned his last No.1 (Dua Lipa collaboration Cold Heart) in October.

An original song penned by the pair, Merry Christmas provides Sheeran’s 12th No.1 in all (third of 2021), and John’s ninth (second of 2021). Only Elvis Presley (21, or 18 if you exclude reissues), The Beatles (17), Westlife (14), Cliff Richard (14) and Madonna (13) have had more No.1s than Sheeran, who ties for sixth place on the list with Take That. All of Sheeran’s No.1s have come since 2014 – a remarkable feat. It’s the most of any act in the near 21 years of the 21st century, leaving joint runners-up Calvin Harris and Eminem (10 apiece) in his wake. Sheeran’s track consumption, tallying actual sales and sales-equivalent streams, is an awesome 74,191,208. Thirty-eight of his tracks have achieved platinum certification, the most unlikely being Tenerife Sea, which only reached No.62, but has to-date consumption of 802,558 units.

The 10th No.1 to include Christmas in its title (11th if we include Xmas), Ed & Elt’s effort is one of over 150 such Top 75 entries but the first entitled simply Merry Christmas. The biggest-selling of more than 50 songs of that title released this century is Bryan Adams’ 2011 effort, which sold a mere 3,990 copies.

Sheeran’s 59th hit, and John’s 91st, Merry Christmas is the third seasonal single by Elton John to make the chart, following 1973’s Step Into Christmas and 1984’s Cold As Christmas. The latter is almost forgotten, as is Ho Ho Ho! Who’d Be a Turkey At Christmas, the original flipside of Step Into Christmas, though ‘Step’ itself has latterly become a massive annual chart hit, with 21st century consumption (mostly sales-equivalent streams) of 1,230,875 units. It jumps 30-16 this week (23,382 sales), making the Top 20 for the fifth year in a row.

The aforementioned Elton John & Dua Lipa single, Cold Heart provided the most disparately-aged No.1 duet of all-time, with 48 years between Elton (74) and Dua (26). Elton is still 74 and Sheeran is 30, making the pair the second most disparately-aged chart-topping duo. In the Top 75 as a whole, the record is arguably held by Amy Winehouse & Tony Bennett. There was 57 years between them when their collaboration Body And Soul was recorded – Winehouse was 27 and Bennet was 84 – but Winehouse died shortly thereafter, and the track was released on what would have been her 28th birthday in 2011, subsequently reaching No.40. Amongst duos alive at the time a record was a Top 75 hit, Elton & Dua’s track broke a record set in 2002, when Andy Williams, then 73, reached No.23 with a new version of his 1968 hit Can’t Take My Eyes Off You, accompanied improbably by Denise Van Outen who, at 28, was his junior by 45 years.

The only 2021 recording amongst them, Merry Christmas is but the most prominent of seven Christmas songs in the Top 10, the others being Last Christmas (4-3, 43,865 sales) by Wham!, All I Want For Christmas Is You (3-4, 42,975 sales) by Mariah Carey, Merry Christmas Everyone (17-6, 29,911 sales) by Shakin’ Stevens, Fairytale Of New York (16-7, 29,764 sales) by The Pogues feat. Kirsty MacColl, It’s Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas (20-9, 26,777 sales) by Michael Buble and Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree (22-10, 26,700 sales) by Brenda Lee.

A little snowed under, Gayle’s debut hit, abcdefu, drifts 2-5 despite increasing consumption 13.51% to 36,391 sales, with ArrDee’s Flowers (7-8, 27,199 sales) completing the Top 10.

The seasonal obsession sends five regular releases tumbling out of the Top 10: Overpass Graffiti (9-13, 24,404 sales) by Ed Sheeran, Seventeen Going Under (8-15, 24,183 sales) by Sam Fender, I Drink Wine (5-18, 22,387 sales) by Adele, Oh My God (6-23, 20,581 sales) by Adele and All Too Well (10-24, 20,509 sales) by Taylor Swift. ACR wasn’t a factor in any of the declines – and without ACR, by the way, Merry Christmas would be No.3 this week, trailing Last Christmas and All I Want For Christmas Is You, whose tallies would be 86,814 and 84,637.

The only new releases to make it through the morass of Christmas perennials to make their debuts are: I Hate U (No.38, 14,911 sales), the 11th hit in all but only third solo hit by R&B singer SZA; Make You Smile (No.42, 13,539 sales), the 32nd hit for D-Block Europe and the 28th for AJ Tracey; Wandered To L.A. (No.59, 10,334 sales), the 21st hit (14th posthumous) for Juice Wrld and the 74th for Justin Bieber; Little Things (No.61, 10,000 sales), ABBA’s 30th hit: and Santa Can You Hear Me (87-66, 9,844 sales), the 21st hit for Kelly Clarkson and the 42nd for Ariana Grande.

Meanwhile, there are new peaks for Come On Home For Christmas (36-26, 19,943 sales) by George Ezra, The Christmas Song (46-39, 14,325 sales) by Olivia Dean, I’ll Be Home For Christmas (59-48, 12,296 sales) by Camila Cabello, Christmas Tree Farm (60-52, 11,405 sales) by Taylor Swift and Snowman (73-55, 10,962 sales) by Sia.

Singles consumption smashes through the 24m. mark for the first time ever, rising 4.16% week-on-week to 24,606,453 units – 11.45% above same week 2020 consumption of 22,078,868 units. Paid-for sales are up 8.12% week-on-week at 379,451 – 14.99% below same week 2020 sales of 446,340.

        Music Week Albums Report
        by Alan Jones

No.1 for the week, and now No.1 for the year – Adele’s 30 racks up its third straight week atop the album chart, with sales of 73,212 copies (including 55,115 CDs, 4,294 vinyl, 2,018 digital sales and 21 cassettes). That’s more than twice as many as any other album, and raises its 21 day cume to 437,349.

It thus becomes the biggest selling album of 2021, pushing Olivia Rodrigo’s Sour album into second place. Released in May, Sour has spent a grand total of five weeks at No.1, with an initial two-week reign followed by three single week returns to the summit. It moves 17-16 on its 29th week on the chart on sales of 6,918 copies, raising its career tally to 377,048.

30 rockets 9-4 in the to-date standings for the 102 weeks that have thus far elapsed in the 2020s, trailing Lewis Capaldi’s Divinely Uninspired To A Hellish Extent (615,843 sales), Dua Lipa’s Future Nostalgia (486,224 sales) and Harry Styles’ Fine Line (462,983 sales). Lipa’s album was a 2020 release, so its cumulative sales are identical to its 2020s sales, but Capaldi and Styles’ albums were both 2019 releases, and have overall consumption figures of 1,256,737 and 532,626, respectively.

Styles, of course, was previously a member of One Direction, one of a plethora of acts who came to fame on ITV’s now defunct The X Factor in a 15-season run from 2004 to 2018. Fifth season (2008) runners-up JLS provide this week’s highest new entry with their first album in nine years, 2.0, debuting at No.4 (23,705 sales, including 1,508 vinyl albums and the week’s top cassette tally of 907). It is their sixth Top 10 album, a tally which includes all five of their studio albums and 2013 compilation, Goodbye: The Greatest Hits.

The only X Factor graduates with more Top 10 albums are Little Mix, whose seventh such release, compilation Between Us, moves 9-7 (10,210 sales) on its fourth straight week in the Top 10. Olly Murs has also had six Top 10 albums, while One Direction have had five. Of course, if we include individual members’ solo releases, One Direction top the list with 11 – Styles and Niall Horan have had two, Zayn Malik and Louis Tomlinson one apiece. Fifth member Liam Payne’s only solo album, LP1, peaked at No.17.

After a fortnight at No.12, Happy Together sprints to No.6 (12,531 sales) for Andre Rieu & His Johann Strauss Orchestra. Recorded after Covid forced the normally prolific Rieu and his cohorts to spend more than a year apart, it’s a celebration of music from all around the world, and becomes Rieu’s 12th Top 10 album.

The rest of the Top 10: = (3-2, 36,067 sales) by Ed Sheeran, Voyage (4-3, 25,920 sales) by ABBA, Christmas (6-5, 14,206 sales) by Michael Buble, Wild Dreams (2-8, 10,207 sales) by Westlife, The Lockdown Sessions (10-9, 9,568 sales) by Elton John and The Tears Of Hercules (7-10, 8,797 sales) by Rod Stewart.

Dipping out of the Top 10 are The Dream Of Christmas (5-13, 7,172 sales) by Gary Barlow and Red (Taylor’s Version) (8-14, 7,031 sales) by Taylor Swift.

Without a chart album to their name two years ago, indie quartet The Lottery Winners from Leigh have now had three, with the latest, Something To Leave The House For, debuting at No.11 (8,339 sales) this week to become their first Top 20 success. Available in no fewer than 20 variations, the album follows their earlier success with a self-titled March 2020 album, which reached No.23, and Sounds Of Isolation, a lockdown covers set which reached No.61 in September 2020. Sounds Of Isolation includes covers of tracks by fellow Greater Manchester acts Oasis, Joy Division, The Smiths and Rick Astley, as well as an a capella rendition of Caravan Of Love that gives The Housemartins’ version a good run for its money. The band – all in their late 20s and early 30s – supposedly released an album called The Art Of Communication back in 2011, but there is no reference to it on their website, it has never recorded an OCC sale, and is available nowhere, suggesting it was shelved, and that the eponymous set mentioned above was their first album.

In a threadbare week for new releases, there are also debuts for Servant Of The Mind (No.31, 3,897 sales), the eighth studio album and third chart entry for Danish heavy metal band Volbeat; and Hall Of Fame 2.0 (No.32, 3,659 sales), which is the third chart album by 22-year-old Chicago rapper Polo G. It is technically an expanded (by 14 tracks) version of Hall Of Fame, which debuted and peaked at No.3 in June on first week sales of 8,229.

There’s a vinyl-fuelled leap for Nirvana album Nevermind (51-24, 4,213 sales, 2,952 on vinyl). Released in 1991, Nevermind reached its peak position (No.5) 20 years later following the release of an anniversary edition, and now, a few weeks after its 30th birthday, reaches its highest position since. Renewed vinyl sales - 1,847 of them - also boost Amy Winehouse’s 2006 chart-topper Back To Black (58-41, 3,005 sales).

Now That’s What I Call Music! 110 tops the compilation chart for the third week in a row (12,807 sales).

Overall album sales are down 0.02% week-on-week at 2,259,168 – 3.24% below same week 2020 sales of 2,334,848. Physical product accounted for 760,981 sales, 33.68% of the total.

After all the extensive discussion of the ages of various duet performers in the preceding paragraph, I'm surprised / disappointed that there is no indication here of whether Brenda Lee, whose 77th birthday is tomorrow, is the oldest living female singer ever to appear in the top ten in the UK. I found myself wondering that, not for the first time, when listening to the Official Chart show this afternoon. Or is there any older lady previously achieving this feat that I'm overlooking?

So as Alan Jones already states Wham get their 2nd week at no.1 without ACR. Interestingly Mariah beats Wham on sales (1,313 vs 916) but not streams (41,662 vs 42,949 halved chart streams, or 83,324 vs 85,898 total chart streams).
Shaking Stevens is at 4, The Pogues at 5, Michael Buble at 6, Brenda Lee at 7 and Adele falling to 8, Band Aid at 9, Elton John - Step Into Christmas at 10, Kelly Clarkson at 11, Ariana Grande at 12, Andy Williams at 13, Cold Heart at 14 and Wizzard at 15. Gayle is probably at 19 without ACR.
