And Space Station No.5 (third track on the same album!) topped this chart earlier...

One of the classic debut albums - sadly, the follow up album 'Paper Money' was mediocre at best. then Sammy Hagar left and that was that....

'Sultans Of Swing' looks a bit out of place in a heavy metal / rock chart. It's a great song but it's more bluesy than rock. I can laugh about this now but I actually bought the album thnking it was going to be a bit more punkier! It was the name of the band that caught my attention. I bought the album on my birthday in March 1979 along with 'The Incredible Shrinking Dickies' by The Dickies and 'Briefcase Full Of Blues' by The Blues Brothers albums as well as the singles 'Tragedy' by the Bee Gees and 'I Will Survive' by Gloria Gaynor.Quite a varied set of records!

I also bought the Dire Straits album on the strength of the single and was a bit disappointed in it - I think 'Down To The Waterline' was the only other track I really liked at first, but most of the others grew on me in time....

I bought 'I Will Survive' because I had the idea of buying every number 1 single from 1979. I soon gave up on that idea when 'Bright Eyes' by Art Garfunkel replaced it at number 1! Actually the B side to 'I Will Survive' turned out to be an excellent disco track and is much better than the A side. I'm sure most people wouldn't expect a disco track in this thread but I still do love this one...

As for the 'Dire Straits' album, after getting used to the album I did grow to like it but I've not heard it for years.

Agree - it's clearly punk influenced, as were many of the NWOBHM bands.

Iron Maiden, in particular, were frequently reviewed in their early days as a punk/metal hybrid act.

I've got (somewhere!) an issue of Sounds from early '77 that actually included Iron Maiden in an article on up and coming punk groups.
