And finally, the ascent of Metallica’s 1986 track Master Of Puppets continues as the song eyes a Top 40 position this week (23). Thanks to its inclusion on Netflix show Stranger Things, introducing the 37-year-old song to a whole new generation, could this latest success story ‘do a Kate Bush’ and prove a future chart-topper?

Metallica's Master of Puppets heading for first Official Singles Chart Top 40 appearance following Stranger Things' Eddie Munson's guitar solo scene

The track - which served as the sole single [ but not in the UK] from Metallica's 1986 album of the same name - could become the group's first Top 40 single in 14 years
      By Carl Smith
The Stranger Things effect looks set to create another success story, as Metallica's Master of Puppets sees a huge uplift following its feature on the Netflix series.

Last month, Kate Bush smashed three Official Charts records simultaneously as Running Up That Hill reached Number 1 on the Official Singles Chart some 37 years after its release. The song's unprecedented surge in popularity was thanks, in large part, to its inclusion during one of Stranger Things Season 4, Volume 1's pivotal scenes.

And now, Metallica's 1986 track could experience a similar ascent as it ascends to Number 23 in the latest Official Singles Chart First Look. Why? Well, it's all down to character Eddie Munson's guitar solo scene.

Why is Metallica's Master of Puppets on the rise following its inclusion in Netflix's Stranger Things?

Viewers have been left in awe of character Eddie Munson's - played by actor Joseph Quinn - guitar solo scene in Stranger Things Season 4 Volume 2. So much so, the song has jumped to at Number 23 in today's First Look.

Should the song continues its ascent at such pace, it could reach the Official Singles Chart Top 40 for the first time ever this Friday.

The group, comprising James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett and Robert Trujillo, are loving the audience's rediscovery of the song, too.
What have Metallica said about Master of Puppets and Eddie Munson's guitar solo scene?

In a statement, the band praised Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer for the 'next level' ways in which they've incorporated music into the show.

They said: "[We're] beyond psyched for them to not only include Master of Puppets in the show, but to have such a pivotal scene built around it’.

"We were all stoked to see the final result and when we did we were totally blown away.

"It’s so extremely well done, so much so, that some folks were able to guess the song just by seeing a few seconds of Joseph Quinn’s hands in the trailer!! How crazy cool is that?"

When was Metallica's last Official Singles Chart Top 40 entry?

Metallica's last UK Top 40 single was 2008 release The Day That Never Comes, lifted from their Number 1 album Death Magnetic released the same year.

Should Master of Puppets ascend into the Top 40, it'll be the group's first to achieve the feat in 14 years and would become their 20th Top 40 hit to date.
Tell me more about Metallica's Master of Puppets single...

Master of Puppets was released in the UK in July 1986 [no, it wasn't! It was in France only https://www.discogs.com/release/1104...ter-Of-Puppets ], and served as the only single from the group's album of the same name. The album peaked at Number 41 upon its release.
Find out if Metallica's Master of Puppets makes the Official Singles Chart Top 40 this Friday 15 July at 5.45pm.

        • Not sure whether this means Metallica was reset or whether its just continued momentum from Stranger Things. A near halving of position (47 to 23) kinda suggests the former perhaps....
Go has gone to ACR, only time will tell if Peru has joined it.....

I did wonder if Metallica was on SCR but it's possible it could be down to downloads. The Sunday update only includes streaming data from Friday but download sles from both Friday and Saturday.

Can James Bay Leap to a second UK Number 1 album this week?

He previously reached the top with 2015 debut album Chaos And The Calm.
                By George Griffiths
James Bay is currently on track to Leap to a second Number 1 album in the UK this Friday.

The Official Chart Update sees the Hertfordshire-born singer-songwriter ahead of nearest competition Harry Styles, although at present less than 300 chart units separate Leap and Harry’s House, so it’s all still to play for. Can James hold on throughout the week?

If he indeed does, Leap would become Bay’s second chart-topping album, having previously reached the top spot with debut LP Chaos and the Calm in 2015. Discover James Bay’s Official Charts history in full here.

Reigning chart topper Paolo Nutini falls three places midweek to Number 4, while Burna Boy’s sixth album Love, Damini could deliver the Afrobeats star his first UK Top 10 record (5) after previously scoring two Top 20 records with 2019’s African Giant (16) and 2020’s Twice As Tall (11).

A first Top 10 appearance is also on the cards forUS R&B singer Brent Faiyaz’s Wasteland (6) while Neil Young and Crazy Horse eyes another Top 10 debut with Toast (7)which sees the Canadian singer-songwriter finally release a fan-favourite ‘lost’ album that was originally scrapped in 2001. It would be the veteran artist’s 10th UK Top 10 record.

Elsewhere, two acts are looking to secure their first-ever Top 40 album in the UK. Swedish post-punk outfit Viagra Boys could muscle into the Top 40 with Cave World (20), while Bristol-based singer-songwriter Katy J Pearson re-invents herself with Sound of the Morning (25).

US rock band Journey return with their first album in 11 years, Freedom. On track to debut at Number 26, it would be their highest-peak since Greatest Hits reached Number 12 in 2010.

And finally, indie pop darling Rae Morris could net her third consecutive Top 40 album with Rachel At Fairyland (37), her first album in four years. [ Rachel@Fairyland to be exact ]

Metallica are still at 23. Reset, probably.

Kim Petras suddenly appears at 74 even though the song was on Amazon from the beginning of June - it was for Pride Month, nothing to do with cashing in on Stranger Things. Some playlist shenanigans happening?

                    • So LF System has increased by 5,285 'sales' (~30%) compared to last week while Kate has increased by 1,255 (an 11% increase though this includes ACR-adjusted streams so could be closer to 20%?); in fact the whole top 5 has increased so far compared to last week... Kate probably has a slender lead in real terms but that may be overturned during the week with LF System getting the real no.1 - only time will tell.... I look forward to the wednesday update for clearer information....

Is it a real increase or was data missing from the previous week's update that is included here?

You say that but except for Kate, the top 5 singles have all increased in sales compared with Wednesday's update last week. Of course if there is less missing data this week, then that may explain it. Both LF System and George have increased by over 15%. The other increases are smaller (2.5% for Harry and 5.5% for Beyonce). Kate has declined by 6%. Depending on her real sales, but if they are less than 3,000 Kate is ahead of LF System just (if it is 3,000 real sales then she is only around 100 ahead). There is a good chance that LF System will be the real no.1 this week.
Album sales are definitely lower this week. Harry's declined by nearly 15% while Ed declined by 7%.

This may have been an error as it is nowhere to be seen on the 100 today, nor does it appear on any of the streaming charts.
Possibly some of Kate's streams were mis-attributed?

                                • While i'd rather Kate didn't fall this quickly, I hope she does get to 7 at some point (and also 10) so tthat another record can be set. First to reach all 10 positions in the top 10 though of course it'd be with an asterisk as the positions are faked since ACR.

Actually without ACR, I believe that Bad Habits has actually peaked at every position in the top 10.

Mabel is leading the race for the UK’s Number 1 album this week, as she eyes up her first-ever UK Number 1 album with pop-tastic record About Last Night…

Centred around a house party, the second studio album from the 26-year-old star follows on from two previous Top 40 collections; 2018 EP Ivy To Roses (28) and 2019 debut LP High Expectations (3). See Mabel’s full Official Chart history here.

But there’s still all to play for, as beabadoobee’s Beatopia tracks for a Number 2 debut this week, currently the biggest release of the week on physical formats. The Filipino-British singer-songwriter, born Beatrice Laus, could enjoy a career best with her second studio album. Debut record Fake It Flowers reached Number 8 in 2020.

The UK’s current Number 1 album, Harry’s House by Harry Styles is also in contention at Number 3 midweek.

Elsewhere, Yorkshire synth-rock export Working Men’s Club could score their first-ever Top 10 album with Fear Fear. The band, comprising Sydney Minsky-Sargeant, Liam Ogburn, Hannah Cobb and Mairead O’Connor, eye a Number 6 debut.
