Beyonce's RENAISSANCE challenged by Eminem's Curtain Call 2 for Official Albums Chart Number 1

Beyoncé's chart-topping seventh studio album faces some tough competition from Eminem's second hits collection Curtain Call 2 this week
    By Carl Smith
The race for the UK’s Number 1 album is already heating up; as Beyoncé and Eminem are currently duking it out to see who will triumph at the top of the Official Albums Chart this Friday

Last week saw Beyoncé score her fourth solo chart-topping LP in the UK with the disco-indebted RENAISSANCE, joining Dangerously In Love (2003), 4 (2011) and Lemonade (2016). At the mid-week stage, Bey could be set to score a second week at Number 1...but she has some serious competition in the form of Eminem.

It’s none other than Slim Shady who's hot on the superstar’s heels with Curtain Call 2, the sequel to his 2005 greatest hits compilation Curtain Call: The Hits, which has spent an incredible 512 weeks on the Official Albums Chart to date.

Less than 100 chart units currently separate Beyoncé and Eminem in our Official Chart Update, so it’s still all to play for. Can Bey hold on for a second consecutive week, or will Marshall Mathers secure his 11th UK Number 1 album? Keep your eyes peeled on OfficialCharts.com for more updates as they come...

Calvin Harris also eyes a Top 5 entry with his sixth studio record Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 2. The album, which sees the Scottish producer team up with the likes of Dua Lipa, Normani and Charlie Puth, could become Calvin’s fifth Top 5 to date, following 2009’s Ready for the Weekend (1), 2012 release 18 Months (1), 2014 LP Motion (2) and 2017 album Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1 (2).

ABBA’s chart mainstay ABBA Gold: Greatest Hits enjoys a midweek boost as the Swedish superstars announce a 30th Anniversary Edition of the album (6). Set to be released on September 23, the reissue will see the ABBA Gold collection available on brand-new formats – including special 2LP picture disc - for the first time.

Becky Hill’s Only Honest on the Weekend is also set to surge back into the Top 10 this week (10), already up 16 places following her performance at the 2022 UEFA Women’s Euro Final Show and the release of brand-new Joel Corry collaboration HISTORY. Meanwhile, Elvis Presley’s ELV1S – 30 Number 1 Hits collection could continue its ascent as Baz Luhrmann-directed biopic Elvis wows audiences (11).

Four-piece metal group Dub War could be heading for their first-ever UK Top 20 album this week with third studio LP Westgate Under Fire. The Welsh group, comprising Benji Webbe, Mikee Gregory, Jeff Rose and Richie Glover, currently track for Number 12 after a weekend of sales.

Neil Young and Promise of the Real look set to claim a Top 20 debut with live album Noise & Flowers this week; an LP recorded during their 2019 European tour (14). Meanwhile, American ska group The Interrupters could mark their first-ever appearance on the Official Albums Chart with fourth studio album In the Wild (17).

Sitting just outside the Top 20 midweek is Heather Small, the voice of English dance group M People, aims to land her second Top 40 solo album with Colour My Life (21).

Oxford-formed indie rock outfit Glass Animals could see their 2020 Number 2-peaking record Dreamland re-enter the Top 40 following the release of a special anniversary edition featuring new artwork and format availability (27).

London eight-piece collective KOKOROKO look set to enjoy their first-ever Top 40 album with Could We Be More this week (28). The rising group will discuss the LP on The Record Club with host Jess Iszatt, this Wednesday August 10 at 6.30pm.

Swedish death metallers Amon Amarth eye up a third UK Top 40 album placing with The Great Heathen Army (30). Meanwhile, Australian DJ Mall Grab could score his first with debut work What I Breathe (33).

And finally, Tool’s Fear Inoculum could return to the Top 40 this week thanks to a deluxe vinyl release (36). The LA rockers’ fifth studio album originally peaked at Number 4 upon its release in 2019.

        • Was expecting Eminem to be #01 this week. I'm shocked how low his sales are for Monday update chart. I was expecting him to be already over 10k.
Guess he will end up at #02 or #03 most probably.

              • So the top 3 singles have all increased in sales so unless this is due to more information being available this week compared to last LF System will probably be reset and not go to ACR.

Kasabian are on course to claim their sixth UK Number 1 album with The Alchemist’s Euphoria.

The seventh album from the Leicester band, and their first in five years, The Alchemist’s Euphoria is the first to feature Sergio Pizzorno on lead vocals. At the mid-week mark, Kasabian are currently out-selling the rest of the Top 5 of the Official Albums Chart combined.

Their previous chart-topping LPs are; Empire (2006), West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum (2009), Velociraptor (2011), 48:13 (2014) and For Crying Out Loud (2017). See Kasabian’s Official Charts history in full here.

Manchester-based indie rock quartet Pale Waves are aiming for their highest-ever UK chart position with third album Unwanted. Currently on track for Number 2 debut, Pale Waves have reached the Top 10 with previous albums My Mind Makes Noises (Number 8) and Who Am I? (3).

There could also be two further new entries inside the Top 10 this week; synth-pop legends Erasure could secure their eleventh Top 10 record with Day-Glo (Based On A True Story) (6), while eight-piece ska band The Dualers could gain their first with Voices From The Sun (8).

Elsewhere, US super-producer Danger Mouse and Philadelphia based hip-hop collective Black Thought’s first collaborative album together Cheat Codes has its eyes set on a Top 20 debut (16) and Swedish death metal band Arch Enemy could gain their highest charting record yet with Deceivers (25).

Following the start of their sold-out six-night run at Wembley, Coldplay’s former chart-topper Music Of The Spheres could break back into the Top 40 (29).

Last year, Scottish rockers Del Amitri gained their first UK Top 10 album in 23 years with Fatal Mistakes, and now its companion album featuring as-yet-unheard material, Fatal Mistakes: Outtakes & B-Sides, is on course to debut at Number 31 - potentially their eighth Top 40 album.

And finally, acclaimed Compton rapper The Game’s tenth LP Drillmatic: Heart vs Mind could become his eighth UK Top 40 entry (38).

"My G" is dedicated to Aitch's little sister Gracie. Funds from the video are being donated to the Down's Syndrome Association. plus Aitch's real name is Harrison, so like H = Aitch and G = Gee, for his family nicknames

Athree-way midweek chart battle is underway on the Official Albums Chart with Steps, Madonna and rapper Aitch all vying for a taste of Number 1 success.

Steps lead the charge on today’s Official Albums Chart Update, currently out in front with their Platinum Collection.

The pop group, comprising Claire Richards, Faye Tozer-Smith, Ian ‘H’ Watkins, Lisa Scott-Lee and Lee Latchford-Evans, celebrate a glittering career spanning 25 years with their latest release. Should it hold on, Platinum Collection will become Steps’ fourth UK chart-topper to date, and first in 11 years.

The iconic quintet already boast Number 1s with second studio LP Steptacular (1999), plus previous compilations Gold: Greatest Hits (2001) and The Ultimate Collection (2011). Read our exclusive interview with Steps’ Lisa here.

It’s by no means a done deal, however, as the undisputed Queen of Pop Madonna is hot on their heels with new compilation Finally Enough Love: 50 Number Ones. The record, which sees her eclectic back catalogue remixed by the likes of Honey Dijon and Felix Da Housecat, is currently tracking at Number 2 debut after a weekend of sales. But could Madonna go all the way and add to her list of 12 UK Number 1 albums? Explore Madonna’s full Official Charts history here.

Meanwhile 22-year-old rapper Aitch looks set to give both acts a run for their money with his debut LP Close to Home. The Mancunian rapper, born Harrison James Armstrong, is ahead of them both on streams, out-streaming Steps by nearly 7:1, which will play to his advantage as the chart week progresses. With 7 UK Top 10 singles under his belt, as well as two Top 10 EPs - 2019’s AitcH20 (3) and 2020 release Polaris (7), could Close To Home be the record to finally take him all the way to Number 1?

Viva Las Vengeance could provide Panic! At The Disco their fifth UK Top 10 record this week. Their third album released as a solo Brendon Urie project, and seventh under the band name overall, eyes a Number 4 entry.

25 years after its original release, Oasis’ Be Here Now is on track for a return to the Top 5 thanks to a new collection of silver anniversary formats (5). The third studio album from Manchester-born rock legends Liam and Noel Gallagher, famed for its unconventional release rollout, first topped the chart in August 1997. The last of what could be eight new entries in this week’s Top 10 comes courtesy of Five Finger Death Punch, with their ninth studio record AfterLife (9). To date, the Las Vegas-formed heavy metal group boast three UK Top 10 albums; 2015’s Got Your Six (6), 2018 LP And Justice for None (7) and 2020 release F8 (7).

David Bowie could add to his 67-strong list of UK Top 40 albums this week, with live record No Trendy Réchauffé (Live Birmingham 95) set to enter at Number 15 thanks to a re-release. The album originally peaked at Number 86 upon its release in November 2020.

Further down the midweek chart, Port Talbot-born male singing group Fisherman’s Friends eye their fourth Top 40 entry with the soundtrack to their latest feature film Fisherman’s Friends: One and All (26). Elsewhere, Aussie punk-rockers The Chats may bag their first-ever UK Top 40 album with Get F*cked (36) while Isle of Wight-born singer-songwriter Lauran Hibberd could also score her first Official Albums Chart appearance with debut LP Garageband Superstar (37).

40 years on from its original release, a standalone CD edition available for the first time sees R.E.M’s debut EP Chronic Town on track for a Top 40 entry (38).

And finally, The Waterboys’ latest studio album All Souls Hill could land the Scottish-Irish folk group their 11th UK Top 40 release to date (40).

Steps are out in front in the race for the No.1 album this week, but it’s still an open contest with no fewer than eight new releases currently pushing for a Top 10 finish.
