Paolo Nutini's Last Night in the Bittersweet set for Number 1 album, with new entries from Shinedown, UB40 featuring Ali Campbell and Astro and more
The Scottish singer-songwriter's fourth album sees off competition from Shinedown, UB40 featuring Ali Campbell and Astro and more midweek
By Carl Smith
Paolo Nutini is on course to claim his third UK Number 1 album, with Last Night in the Bittersweet currently outselling its closest competition 4:1.
The 35-year-old Scottish singer-songwriter’s fourth studio album marks his first release in eight years and tracks to score him a hat-trick of Number 1 albums. Paolo has previously topped the Official Albums Chart with 2009’s Sunny Side Up and 2014 record Caustic Love. See Paolo Nutini’s full Official Charts history here.
MORE: Paolo Nutini's full Official Charts history so far
Eyeing a Number 2 entry this week are Florida-formed rock group Shinedown, with their seventh studio album Planet Zero. The record could also prove a career-best and a first Top 5 hit in the UK for the band who comprise Brent Smith, Barry Kerch, Zach Myers and Eric Bass. Their last album, 2018’s Attention Attention, peaked at Number 8.
Unprecedented, the new record from British reggae legends UB40’s founding members Ali Campbell and Astro, is heading for a Number 6 debut at the midweek stage. Recorded between lockdowns, the collection of covers and original songs was due to be released last year, but was postponed following the passing of Astro in November 2021. Their last collaborative album A Real Labour of Love, recorded with former bandmate Mickey Virtue, reached Number 2 in 2018.
Elsewhere, Nick Cave’s Seven Psalms, a collection of spoken word pieces set to music recorded with long-time collaborator Warren Ellis, could provide the Australian singer-songwriter his eighth solo [eh?
] UK Top 10 album to date (8). See Nick Cave’s solo Official Charts history so far here.
The release of Imagine Dragons’ Mercury – Act 1 and Act 2 collection could see the American pop-rock group enjoy their sixth UK Top 10 album, currently on course to land at Number 9.
Elvis Presley’s ELV1S: 30 Number 1 Hits collection tracks to return to the Top 20 following the release of Baz Luhrmann-directed biopic Elvis (16). The album topped the charts upon its initial release back in 2002. See Elvis Presley’s full Official Charts history here.
Northern Irish rockers Ash could see their debut album 1977 back in the Top 40 thanks to a vinyl reissue (27). Originally released in 1996, the record peaked at Number 1.
Adele’s 30 flies up 46 places to Number 28 midweek, following her BST Hyde Park performances at the weekend and, finally, 30-year-old British hip-hop artist Pak-Man eyes his first-ever UK Top 40 album with Big Pakachino, currently at Number 31.

It’s a silly rule but let’s not forget that most of us weren’t even born when Kate Bush was last #1 on the singles chart - who would have ever thought we’d see her at #1 in 2022? Her success is deserved and has been enjoyable to watch.

When a track gets a reset it is subject to the rules on "decline" from day 1. Most tracks which are reset tend to still be growing and so don't usually fall back to ACR as quick as 3 weeks after being reset. In the week that RUTH was reset its streams were already declining from the previous week so the track immediately went on to week 1 (of 3) decline straight away.

So a fake no.1 this week as Kate's back on ACR. Only time will tell whether it can be a real no.1 - assuming things don't change before Friday.Last edited by braindeadpj; Sun July 3, 2022, 18:02.

And finally, this week’s highest new entry could belong to Paolo Nutini. Throughout The Echoes is taken from Paolo’s newest album Last Night In The Bittersweet, and it’s pacing for a Number 23 debut. It would be the Scottish singer-songwriter’s highest-charting single since 2014’s Scream (Funk My Life Up).

Porcupine Tree leading the way for possible first UK Number 1 album
But can streaming giants Harry Styles and Drake close the gap?
By George Griffiths
Porcupine Tree are currently on course for their first UK Number 1 album of their career this week, with Closure/Continuation.
The eleventh studio album by the English progressive rock band, and their first since entering hiatus in 2009, would not only be their first chart-topper, but their first to even reach the Official Albums Chart Top 10. Discover Porcupine Tree’s Official Charts history in full here.
However, while Closure/Continuation has a strong showing on physical sales so far, streaming giants Harry Styles and Drake will offer up a very real challenge for the top spot with Harry’s House (2) and Honestly, Nevermind (3) respectively.
Elsewhere in the Top 10, there could be further new entries on this Friday’s chart from Chris Brown with Breezy (6), American country artist Luke Combs’ Growin’ Up (7), the second studio album from singer Conan Gray, Superache (8), and Eric Clapton’s Nothing But The Blues (10), a collection of 17 previously-unreleased live performances from 1994.
MORE: Glastonbury effect set to boost Billie Eilish, Sam Fender & Wet Leg
Post-hardcore rockers Alexisonfire are also on track for their first UK Top 40 LP with Otherness (13), while Black Stone Cherry eye up a new entry with live album Live From Royal Albert Hall (23). Californian pop trio MUNA could also secure their first-ever entry on the Official Albums Chart with self-titled third record MUNA (26).
Machine Gun Kelly’s Mainstream Sellout could re-enter the Top 40 thanks to the release of a life in pink Deluxe Edition (30), as could Kanye West’s former Number 1 Donda after its own deluxe edition was released on vinyl for the first time (33).
US progressive rock group Coheed & Cambria’s tenth album Vaxis – Act II: A Window Of The Waking Mind is looking to become their highest-charting work yet (32), while indie-rock act Soccer Mommy’s breakout third album Sometimes Forever could be her first to chart in the UK (35).
And finally, former Fleetwood Mac member Christine McVie’s solo album Songbird (A Solo Collection) is on course to enter the chart at Number 37. Her second solo record and first since 1984, it could be her first ever solo Top 40 entry.

Just having a very cursory flick through online I couldn't see that a video has been issued yet for 'LNT' either, so even if one takes a single release nowadays as a track that's not necessarily issued separately to audio-stream or download to buy but is given an associated video release to stream, which does sometimes happen (Adele and The Weeknd's notional 'second singles' from their last LPs only seem to actually have received a stand-alone release on video), it doesn't seem to qualify yet even under that measure, and neither does 'MFASR'.

Foals have been one of the most underrated acts singles-wise over the last decade. They've done better on albums, but still not as enduring as the quality of their compositions and live performances imply. I am rather hoping they can show sometimes that the charts can reflect musical superiority and beat off the repetitive substandard auto-tuned (and yet somehow still flat!) meanderings of Drake. If Harry does it though, so be it.

His 3 songs on the singles charts being now outside the TOP 5 show that he is really having less streaming support on this album than the previous album.
