No prior week places were given.

I've added official national positions for the week in brackets.

Good to see Roman Holliday's underrated Stand By doing so well - it peaked at just 61 nationally.

On the other hand Modern Romance's feeble High Life ( No.8 this week in the national charts) is nowhere to be seen...

thanks for posting the Gallup chart plus the London HMV chart from Sounds too.

Sounds started to publish the London HMV chart in place of the MRIB chart once Record business folded. However from 2 July 1983 they started to publish the Gallup (i.e. industry) charts.

Here's an old post by the former (and late) UKMix poster Dave Taylor which mentions the London HMV (and MRIB Worldwide singles chart).

              • "Instant replay", "Bicycle race" and "Nice'n'sleazy" are the ones with the biggest difference between the "official" chart and Gallup (others are very close). I wonder was there any particular reason with these songs...

Also, interesting how "Denis" topped every other chart - including this one - yet spent 3 weeks at No. 2 in BMRB list. Perhaps these was minuscule difference with whatever was at No. 1 - but still a pity they didn't get to the top with this one, if only for just one week.

                Comment

                • Thanks - I should have made it clear that the BMRB peak position refers only to the period up to 3 Nov - Instant Replay and Bicycle Race went higher later.

The Stranglers and The Jam are the acts doing distinctly better here - "punk" acts generally charted higher on the non-official charts!

I remember being infuriated at the time when Blondie didn't top the official chart - held off first by Kate Bush then the dreaded Brian and Michael!

                        • Interesting posts Metalweb. I tried to make chartruns of these charts back in ‘16 but too many charts were missing. See from the 78 Mar-Nov top tens that you must have access to a bunch of those I’m missing. Will you be posting so many that a new try at chartruns will be worthwile?

                          • I don't have all the missing info unfortunately but there is some I've yet to post. I'll do so soon.

                            • This is the first Gallup chart produced after the 22 Dec 78 chart above.

Driver 67, with 'Car 67' at number 42, was singer-sonwriter Paul Phillips. Not only was he an aspiring artist but he was also editor of Radio & Record News, the publication that carried these Gallup charts.

                                http://www.annecarlini.com/ex_interviews.php?id=1337

I do recall from another interview he did that he (Phillips) said he was able to call in favours from DJs and Programme Directors from various ILR stations and was able to secure a decent amount of airplay prior to the single charting.

                                • Interesting interview....

Car 67 is a seriously irritating record though - I remember several deejays at the time seemed to think it was about a cop rather than a cabbie!

I vaguely remember the creepy follow-up Headlights too - it obviously wouldn't have got much airplay even back then, but I do remember hearing it.

It certainly didn't reach No.75, as claimed!

                                  • Is this one of the very little cases when the music journalist actually succeeded in music?

                                          • I've been looking back through this thread and the missing charts seem to be:

16 June (partially reconstructed from the 23 June chart)
                                            18 Aug
                                            9 Sept
                                            15 Sept
                                            22 Sept
                                            29 Sept

                                            10 Nov
                                            17 Nov
                                            24 Nov
                                            1 Dec
                                            8 Dec
                                            15 Dec

I don't have any more of the November or December charts but I've found all four of the September ones.

The 18 Aug chart can be mostly reconstructed from the 25 Aug chart and that would give us almost all of the info from 18 March to 3 November.

In the meantime, I noticed the 1 April chart accidentally omitted No.98

The single missing is Eric Clapton - Wonderful Tonight.

                                              100

The best candidate for 37 is Elvis Presley's Don't Be Cruel, at 26 on Aug 11 and gone on 25 Aug.

Anything else would have had to climb to 37 from outside the Top 50, then drop out of the 100 completely the following week.

                                              • The story about how a record managed to get to number 29 in the Gallup chart on the basis of one NW shop may be based on 'Move your body' by Gene Farrow. It got to 29 on 12th May when the OC had it at only 67. However the facts don't quite fit, as Gallup had it in the Midlands chart as well as the NW one that week.

The following week it was at 51 - and only on the NW chart, then 70 and then 89. During this 3 week 'tail' it did not appear at all on the OC.

Although 'Needletime' and it's successor had a cover price it was sent out free to all the radio stations and record companies, who were the main customers, and so relied on advertising for income. Presumably this was insufficient.

                                                  • 'And The Band Played On' by Flash And The Pan was a great single that should have been a massive hit. They also had a great single out in 1977 which also should have been a massive hit, the wonderful 'Hey St Peter'. Sadly George Young died in October 2017, three weeks before his brother Malcolm on AC/DC fame also died.

Good to see Ultravox in there too, two years before they made their debut on the BMRB / BBC chart. Hopefully Passing_Strang sees this.
