  • UK Singles Charts: 1985 (including chart panel sales)

Welcome. It's time for another thread dedicated to the UK Singles charts as compiled by Gallup. Gallup compiled the UK Singles charts from January 1983 to February 1994. This thread covers 1985. As with both 1983 and 1984, I will be posting each weekly top 200 chart as well as best sellers of the year charts to cover sales to the end of March, June, September and, at the end of the thread, for the whole of the year.

Before I start to post the charts (the first new chart based on sales from 1985 will be posted on Monday 8 August 2022) I'd like to explain how the charts you see in this thread are put together. Not in the "compiled by Gallup" sense, but in the "posted by Robbie" sense. In the 1983 thread, in my opening post, I posted the following:

A few weeks ago I was contacted by a UKMIx member who informed me that he had also visited the library but had been able to obtain all the weekly sales information for the UK singles charts during the whole of this period. This was the full top 200 chart for each week too. The member suggested that I share the information with anyone who was interested in seeing the full top 200 charts with sales (along with the various titles that were starred out each week, some weeks this is quite a large amount) and agreed that I could post these charts on the forum. With a massive thanks to UKMix member kobyhadrian, who has literally provided a jaw-dropping amount of information that I had thought we would never be able to see, here are the Gallup charts from this era, along with the sales index for each title. These are better known as their chart panel sales, the hypothetical amount that each title was calculated to have sold in a 250 strong panel of record shops (a throwback to the early days of the BMRB chart when the chart panel was 250 shops). I would also like to thank kingofskiffle for his help too.
To expand on the above and how the charts I post are put together: kobyhadrian has paper copies of all the Gallup Top 200 Singles charts from January 1983 to February 1994. As he doesn't hold them in a database, he is typing up each chart (I can vouch that he is a very proficient, fast and accurate typist!) and is sending the charts to me in batches of 6 months of charts at a time. The information he provides to me is the top 200 for each week by current position, title, artist and panel sales. I could have posted them in this format but wasn't sure if that would do justice to such a wealth of information. I contacted kingofskiffle and between kobyhadrain, kingofskiffle and myself decided that kingofskiffle would add each chart to the excellent chart database that he has which, for the purpose of this thread, would add a "last week" position and a weeks on chart figure. kingofskiffle additionally adds in other information such as the catalogue number (usually of the 7" version) and then sends an excel spreadsheet to me which I then adapt for posting the charts in this thread. I've kept to the basic chart format of TW-LW-Woc-Title-Artist-PanelSales in order to be able to post the charts within the constraints of the forum software. I could have added in, for example, the catalogue number of each title, but there isn't enough space to do so, the width of the posting area being the restricting factor here.

As I mentioned above, the first chart will be posted on Monday (8 August) and there are a total of 52 weekly charts and an end of year chart to be posted as well as 3 year-to-date charts. 56 charts in all. That should keep me busy posting them. It has certainly kept kobyhadrian busy typing them all up and is keeping kingofskiffle busy adding them to his chart database. Hopefully it will keep everyone else busy reading the thread (and posting in it too, hopefully!). I'll be posting around 6 charts each week so the final chart to be posted, the best selling singles of 1985, should be posted sometime around the early part of October.

Finally, if anyone has any questions or comments in general please feel free to ask / make them. Either kingofskiffle or myself will do our best to answer them.

    Let 1985 begin...

Welcome back! Incredibly low panel sales in the bottom half of the chart. I know it's the January lull, but compared to the corresponding week in '84, panel sales to reach No. 100 are down from 34 to 21, and for No.200 down from 13 to 9 units - the lowest yet.

I would consider though the context. Add up the total sales in 11 Jan 84 and 12 Jan 85 and the size is probably the same. If you could only buy one record a week, and you bought Band Aid, you’d buy others the week after, so it could be something like that.

With renewed thanks to all those involved in producing and posting these charts, it's great to see the next instalment open up.

Blondini must be thrilled now that the Care Bear song has finally appeared at No 102!

Very low entry for Don Henley's 'Boys Of Summer'. I always thought that had this track, which is very redolent of hot summer weather actually been released in a more clement month, rather than the dark depths of December, it might've caught on quicker and performed better overall. Saying that, it still only made No 12 upon reissue in July 1998, so maybe that theory's unsafe.

Given that the song is clearly about the passing of youth (using the end of summer as a metaphor) I'd say the logical time to release it was autumn (as was the case in America, if memory serves me right....)

Great track at any time of the year, though, better than anything Henley wrote with The Eagles...

'Do They Know It's Christmas' had been deleted by this point. Bob Geldof decided to delete the single when, after Christmas 1984, a number of record shops indicated that they would no longer be selling the single at cost price. As Geldof wasn't happy with the idea he decided to stop production of further stock, effectively deleting the single.

Panel sales at number 200 will be even lower in the early 1990s.

There's plenty of chart movement this week as a massive post Christmas / New Year shakeout sees 12 records enter the top 40 with plenty of big climbers too.

I bought both those singles on 12". Unbelievably, 'Let The Night Take The Blame' was written by the same three guys who also wrote (and performed as Starturn On 45 Pints) 'Pump Up The Bitter'!

                                3D - Nearer - "world's first holographic single". https://www.discogs.com/release/1457407-3D-Nearer
I have already discussed this on Twitter last year (which i have now updated with this latest thread news).

The Bill theme makes the 100 and should have been bigger.
I'm not familiar with The Front Line - a BBC sitcom "about two half-brothers of West Indian descent who shared a house, one brother a policeman and one a dreadlocked Rastafarian". Only ran for one series.

It's still a great song and is one of 4 excellent records that peaked at number 21 in 1985, the others being 'Duel' by Propaganda, 'Grimly Fiendish' by The Damned and 'Bring On The Dancing Horses' by Echo & The Bunnymen.

Disappointed not to see Big Daddy's 'Dancing In The Dark' cover in that list!

'Invisible' by Alison Moyet (at #25) was written by Lamont Dozier, who died yesterday (8 August). I'd forgotten LD had written it until I read his obituary earlier tonight. Great song from a brilliant songwriter.
