Suspect the extra attention from reaching number 1 and promotion on TOTP etc would have been important factors. This includes the singles that spent just one week at the top. These particular singles were often replaced at number 1 by a strong seller that overtook it. I Got You Babe, There Must Be An Angel and Move Closer are examples of this trend.

Until the "peak in week 1" charts of the mid 90s to mid 00s, it was fairly common for a record to gain sales the week after it reached number 1. TOTP still attracted audiences of above 10m in the mid 1980s and this would have given the new number 1 a boost. Plus the record was usually still gaining traction and this would help drive sales further too.

The original release had artwork from the video so it must have been out then - my earlier statement that it wasn't was not correct.
It seems that their US label hammered promotion of the video and that's how it broke there.

Thanks for the reminder of The HBGBs and 'Radio Active'! My parents were keen so I often got to hear the shows whereas otherwise I mightn't have been aware of them at the time. They would always quote the line 'Meaningless Songs In High Voices' every time a Bee Gees song was aired on TV or radio, to the point where I ceased to find it funny, but after so long I'm heartened to find it now raises a chortle or two again. The Springsteen 'Bored With The USA' parody is genius, although I suspect the average typical American would not have seen the joke (which of course makes it all the more amusing)! I think they were a little harsh on Billy Idol though - okay perhaps not on him per se, as he was an arrogant perfumed ponce, but 'Eyes Without A Face' was too melodic in my estimation to be so churlishly dismissed as a 'Song Without A Tune'!

The act of course included Philip Pope as well as the since-disgraced Angus Deayton, who was a highly-trained classical musician and went on to write and perform numerous themes for TV shows (as well as appearing in them), in the similar vein to Howard Goodall, though fortunately Pope takes himself far less seriously. People probably best know Pope and the other chap (Michael Fenton-Stevens) from the television equivalent of 'Radio Active' which appeared in 1990 under the name of 'KYTV' which was also pretty funny at the time. None of these credible humorous contributions though explain why 'The Chicken Song', which both had a hand in writing for Spitting Image in '86, was so supremely un-funny. I guess everyone has their off days and given it sold buckets I doubt they cared!
