Cheers Robbie - I couldn't find a 7-incher of this either when I had a cursory look yesterday. I wasn't far off presuming it was essentially the same track, just with a crisper synth snare drum and a few added synth sounds! There is a guitar lick in there but that might just have featured on the extended 12-inch for all I know. Like you, I quite like this, but will be sticking with the '77 edition all things considered. Rarely does a remix really eclipse its forerunner IMO, whether or not the track has been significantly remodelled. Early remixing usually didn't alter much - this re-boot of 'Magic Fly' is in the vein of Patrick Cowley's take on 'I Feel Love' from '82, which basically was the original, even using the same drum pattern, but with a few extra synth lines, in that case which curiously resembled a duck being strangled.

Wow, that's a very low debut for Sarah Brightman & Paul Miles-Kingston's version of 'Pie Jesu' at 165! Next week it will be No 14 and I would've assumed that was its maiden chart entry, but apparently not. MW for 2nd March does indicate it was slated for release in the week of 4th March though, which means it could've charted legitimately week-ending the 16th and so this wasn't some sort of 'leak'. I wonder why it started so low if it was suddenly to become so popular? Perhaps there was a TV performance or something....

....Speaking of TV, 'EastEnders' takes a huge leap upwards to 83 from 161, an-about-to-be-reissued theme from 'Cheers' re-enters at 145, while surely one of the most memorable melodies and rousing renditions among all the TV themes, that from 'Miss Marple', storms in at 100! If ever you want to feel uplifted, stick that track on and your posture will improve, a smile will cross your face, you will likely feel the need to be upstanding, and possibly even salute...

The Pump Blenders - possibly one of the best band names ever?! Even beats Alien Sex Fiend in my book. How did I miss them at the time?!

I didn't realise Eddy Grant had released his own solo version of 'Baby Come Back'. According to the OCC Top 100 archive it didn't register, so it looks like it didn't make much further impact beyond its 108 debut. All that would change when Pato Banton took it on nine years later of course.

Is that Run-DMC's first UK chart visitation with 'King Of Rock' at 94? Possibly not, but can't be arsed to check the '83 and '84 threads just now.

I'm assuming that 'Pie Jesu' charted on perhaps just a few hours sales. Or maybe there was a distribution problem that held up stock getting to all but a very small handful of shops. That said, the way Gallup undertook security and other checks, had the record not been selling in the check shops it utilised and which were not part of the chart panel, then the record would have been removed from the chart.

The full artist credit (and which appears on both label and sleeve) for 'Pie Jesu' is Sarah Brightman and Paul Miles-Kingston, Winchester Cathedral Choir, Director Martin Neary. James Lancelot - Organ. English Chamber Orchestra conducted by Lorin Maazel. For obvious reasons, Music Week and Record Mirror credited just the two main vocalists and for space reasons I have done the same!

Article in Music Week for this week saying compilation of the indie and metal charts transfers from MRIB to Music Week themselves. I didn't know they excluded indie records that qualified for the metal and disco charts. What a weird rule - an independent label is an independent label, yet they were already treating indie as a genre by those exclusions. I wonder when that rule was dropped? Obviously MRIB continued their own charts that were published in No. 1 magazine and they included the likes of WASP and The KLF on their indie charts.

Came across these threads completely by accident this week - a long journey from the Wikipedia page for 'Creep' By Radiohead, but one well worth making! Infinite kudos to all the work done to out this together, and the anecdotes and facts just add to it! As another user put it, having the sales figures to hand really does unlock the charts!

One thing I've just come across though- and I might as well raise it here as anywhere - comes from the 4th May 1991 edition of Music Week which I was just reading, as you do! One Rick Smith, "panel boss and security manager", is quoted in a piece on the futility of chart-hyping that "buying one record does not equate to one panel sale". But...surely it did though...didn't it? Sadly the article doesn't expand on this. Any ideas?

Perhaps, or that the checks and balances system of weighting meant that one sale could be downweighted depending on which type of record shop it was bought in and in which part of the country. As sales from 1,200 shops (though not all would be chosen in any one particular week) would be distilled down to the historic and hypothetical 250 strong chart panel which was meant to reflect the national picture of record sales, 1 sale could be ignored (if the shop wasn't used that week), or reduced down for statistical purposes to less than one sale (as part of the sampling process). Of course, it's possible that the sale could be upweighted too, though by 1991 (with a large pool of chart return shops to choose from) this was highly unlikely. It did happen in the early days of the charts though.

One panel sale is one sale across the standard panel of 250 shops.

If there were only 250 shops in the sample one sale would be one panel sale (if each shop was considered equal).

With more than 250 shops in the sample the figures are distilled down 'cell' by 'cell' with the sum total of all the cells equivalent to 250 shops. The calculation process involves a lot of cell weightings, but if all cells were equal and there were 1,000 shops in the sample one sale would be a quarter of a panel sale.

Article in Music Week for this week saying compilation of the indie and metal charts transfers from MRIB to Music Week themselves. I didn't know they excluded indie records that qualified for the metal and disco charts. What a weird rule - an independent label is an independent label, yet they were already treating indie as a genre by those exclusions. I wonder when that rule was dropped? Obviously MRIB continued their own charts that were published in No. 1 magazine and they included the likes of WASP and The KLF on their indie charts.

This was debated for a long time. Should the indie charts contain material that sounded like it belonged to certain genres of music, or should it be open to all types of music as long as it was distributed by a company that was not part of a major company? There were a number of changes of approach over the years.

If we go by Lonnie's logic here Don't Dream It's Over should be listed as an AA on the 1991 Crowded House release Fall At Your Feet. We have no evidence that Lucifer's Friend was marketed alongside Tears Idle Tears. In fact, all 7" singles used to credit the b-side on the front sleeve in the 60s and 70s so if we did a top 200 from then, we'd have aa-sides everywhere!
Interestingly the Crowded House single has an a-side on one side of the label but the "b-side" has no "b" on it - it's not assigned a letter!

I would refer to the label as the official charts do or see evidence of the supporting track being marketed - if it's very prominent on the sleeve then that could be enough. Another example being the reissue of Take My Breath Away which actually credited Danger Zone as an aa-side on the label as well as co-listing it on the sleeve.
