Just spotted 'Sexual Healing' by Marvin Gaye's racked up 81 weeks! There aren't many singles that have so far exceeded that total. And that's at least 11 weeks less than its full total given in first charted in Oct '82 pre-Gallup! Never realised this track was so enduring on trickle-sales over three years after it arrived. I suppose Gaye's unfortunate and untimely death in '84 might've boosted his product.

I've just checked and the actual title on the record is '5 Minutes On...'. 'Five Minutes' charted in summer 1985 and this 1986 release has a slightly different catalogue number. The 1986 entry is simply listed as '5 Minutes' by Gallup. I've not heard of either the 1985 or 1986 releases so don't know if the 1986 release is a re-release, a remix or a re-recording or indeed a different track.

These cover versions didnt quite recreate the magic of Barry Ryan's memorable 1968 original with its brilliant vocals and orchestration. Way ahead of its time. If you haven't heard it you are in for a treat.

I recorded it ’cause I knew it was a hit rather than the fact that I loved it, and that will teach me, you know? 'The Promise' by Arcadia is a hell of a song.
I wonder if the Duran Duran association worked against it.
It was too serious for the younger fanbase, and never likely to be taken seriously by 'proper' music fans.

A few casual observations of interest to me -

- I didn't realise Breathe had started chart life as early as Jan '86 (joint No 102). It's unfortunate they never really gained traction after their big '88 hit although I believe the Americans took them to heart for a little while longer. Last I heard lead singer David Glasper was living in Thailand, apparently lacking in direction, doing selfmade vids of him strumming his guitar and seemingly not having fully reconciled himself to never having made it big longer-term. Always sad when that happens.
- D Ross & L Richie's '81 hit 'Endless Love' still trickling away (No 115; 25 weeks on the extended listing plus however many accrued prior to its inception). Another case of a song I had no clue at the time was still popular enough to still be getting anything like 31 panel sales 4.5 years in! Fascinating to find these sleepers in the bottom echelons.
- Low initial showing for The Damned's take on 'Eloise' (No 129) before leaping up in the coming weeks. Not as good as Barry Ryan methinks.
- Is that The Beastie Boys' maiden chart appearance (No 151) with a song that wouldn't be a big hit until the following year? Never my cup o' tea I'm afraid but always worth noting an influential act's first 'true' chart registration ahead of what we might have considered it to be before becoming privy to these extended tabulations.

It's the first appearance for the Beastie Boys. Not the last either. I don't recall them from 1986. I'm sure '(You Gotta) Fight For The Right (To Party)' was the first time I had heard of them.

I don't know why 'Endless Love' had such an endless top 200 chart run. It's not something I've ever liked but I didn't think that almost 5 years after it was released it would still be attracting regular weekly sales, albeit low level ones.

I think the label struggled so much to break Breathe that by the time the band did have their big breathrough hit they were struggling behind the scenes. The manager left, the bass guitarist left and the band struggled to follow up their big hit.

Lulu and The Luvvers' 'Shout' must have accumulated quite a sales figure over the years it seems to have floated around since initial release back in 1964 for years and years just below the chart radar selling and selling and selling.

Some background to the competing covers on Wiki:

Dave Vanian had been thinking about doing a cover of the song from at least 1980 and in 1985 wanted to do a non-album single. Rat Scabies did not want a third single released from Phantasmagoria, which MCA Records wanted to do. It was decided that "Eloise" could be recorded as long as "Is It a Dream?" was released as the third single.

At the same time, a version of "Eloise" by Far Corporation singer Robin McAuley was released. McAuley said that the Damned's version had "got absolutely no chance of making it in the charts". Of the two competing versions at the time, Barry Ryan said that "I like the Damned's version best, it's even better than mine".

It depends on whether the re-release has a different catalogue number. There were fewer rules about format numbers in the 1980s and so some re-releases had the same catalogue number as the original.
