UK Singles Charts: 1986 (including chart panel sales)

I'm going to post more about this at the weekend when I've had a chance to check some additional figures but from the additional sales information that kobyhadrian sent me a few days ago it's looking increasingly likely that Gallup and the BPI were using a multiplier of 18, not 17, in 1986.

I'm going to run some additional checks, not just on 1986, but also on 1984, 1985 and 1987 too (the latter weekly charts will be posted in the new year). When I've done this, at some point over the weekend, I'll post a few lines about my findings.

Anonymous cover versions weren't a usual thing at the time (or at least not that i can recall) and chart wise they only really became a thing in that period where record labels started to hold back download releases which allowed some chancers to release note-for-note-the-same cover versions.

But then this is one of the manifold joys of seeing this extended chart revealed after all these years - the weird random and sometimes downright silly stuff that troubled the lower end of the listings. One of the few products of theirs during '86 that didn't sell by the bucket-load.

While we're on that subject, just look at what's at official No 200 this latest week - a Dire Straits extended dance mixes EP?!! Well I never. One of the few products of theirs during '86 that didn't sell by the bucket-load.

It's just the 1983 release (reissued?) that includes Twisting By The Pool. It's not a dance remix single at all.

I'll have look into the Fuzzbox release and will post back. There was a change in chart rules at some point around 1985 regarding track listings on 7" and 12" which is why, for example, 'The Trumpton Riots' appears twice. It might simply be a case of the Fuzzbox single title needing to be amended to 'XX Sex'.

The Survivor double A side is a curiosity. It seems to have been withdrawn almost as soon as it was released as 45cat has another release for 'I Can't Hold Back' with a different B side and with a similar catalogue number. That one seems to have flopped though it's possible that sales of the two versions were combined.

Ann Breen will still be around as we head into Christmas 1986. The question is: will she join the 100 week club?

It might be early sales but could also be the last of the stock of the 1985 release. That said, if it was the 1985 release charting again, that stock had been lying around for 5 months, which is when the record last charted inside the top 200. kingofskiffle has linked it to the 1986 re-issue which is just as likely to be the reason for it charting.

I've had a look at 'Rules & Regulations EP' by Fuzzbox. It does start life (in the charts I've posted above and for a while after) as 'X X Sex'. The single appears to be charting on 7" sales alone at this point, which is a 4 track release. A 12" version is later released, containing one additional track. It seems as if Gallup combined sales of both versions and it must be the 12" version which propels the single into the top 100. At this point Music Week lists the single as 'X X Sex / Rules And Regulations' for its initial top 100 week before listing it as 'Rules And Regulations (EP)' for the rest of its chart run. kobyhadrian has also listed the single as 'X X Sex' for a number of weeks before switching to 'Rules And Regulations EP' from a week after Music Week had started to do so. Record Mirror matches with kobyhadrian. Music Week credits both the 7" and 12" versions.

As the single is only listed once on the chart each week and as there isn't agreement about when the title credit changes I'm following kingofskiffle's lead and keeping the title and weeks on chart consistent throughout its chart run, both of which link to the 7" version.

The total panel sales for the week were printed on the sales reports. Maybe kobyhadrian has noted these?

In the BPI Yearbook for 1989-1990 the average weekly sales for the first 3 months of each year from 1985 to 1989 are listed. The figure for 1989 uses 17 as the multiplier. There is also a comparison of the figures for 1985 and 1989, indicating a decline of 18% over that time.

This comparison would be of no use if the figures were compiled using different multipliers. All comparisons in the reports and publications were made using panel sales, not the multiplied-up figures.

The average weekly sale for the first 3 months of 1986 was 1.093.300. What multiplier produces that figure for the first 3 months of 1986? Of course, it's possible Gallup and / or the BPI could have decided after 1986 that 17 was the multiplier that should have been used for that year.

Not one, but two of my fave 80's 'indie' bands make their chart debuts this week - they both had tracks included on the 'seminal' NME cassette 'C86' so perhaps that gave their sales a boost (I think it was around March 86 that 'C86' appeared, though I could be wrong).

I've had a look at 'Rules & Regulations EP' by Fuzzbox. It does start life (in the charts I've posted above and for a while after) as 'X X Sex'. The single appears to be charting on 7" sales alone at this point, which is a 4 track release. A 12" version is later released, containing one additional track. It seems as if Gallup combined sales of both versions and it must be the 12" version which propels the single into the top 100. At this point Music Week lists the single as 'X X Sex / Rules And Regulations' for its initial top 100 week before listing it as 'Rules And Regulations (EP)' for the rest of its chart run. kobyhadrian has also listed the single as 'X X Sex' for a number of weeks before switching to 'Rules And Regulations EP' from a week after Music Week had started to do so. Record Mirror matches with kobyhadrian. Music Week credits both the 7" and 12" versions.

As the single is only listed once on the chart each week and as there isn't agreement about when the title credit changes I'm following kingofskiffle's lead and keeping the title and weeks on chart consistent throughout its chart run, both of which link to the 7" version.

Surprisingly it is listed as Rules & Regulations EP on OCC database but the old Guinness and Virgin books use the credit XX Sex / Rules & Regulations.
Unlike OCC site to be in tandem with yourselves!

The Wedding Present's second ever single and a #4 indie hit (on the Cherry Red archived chart).

Shop Assistants had 2 #2 indie hits on the same chart - this was the second but lasted less than half the length on that chart of the first.

We can definitely see an explosion of indie music and the indie sound right now!

That's 11 sales! I don't have the catalogue number of the version that is at #200 so can't tell whether it's old stock that is suddenly selling or an early leak of the 1986 re-issue.

The band was formed in 1980 by Mike McGuire (vocals) and Steve Rolls (Guitar) after disbanding 1st generation punk band The Now. They recruited Pete Jostins (Bass), Shaun Foreman (Guitar & Keyboards) and Colin Meech (Drums), with various others contributing in their early days.[1] They were initially influenced by bands such as A Certain Ratio and Shriekback.[1] Their first releases were two self-financed singles, "Jane's Third Party" and the To You, With Regard EP, in 1980 and 1981 respectively. The latter was sufficiently successful to attract major-label interest from CBS and Virgin Records, but after a further single on their own 'Chant' label, and with guitarist Simon Childs added as a permanent member, they signed a deal with Warners subsidiary Blanco y Negro, debuting on the label in 1986 with eight versions of the single "Sing Song".[1] After releasing the Spacemate package - a double LP, book, poster, set of cards and instruction manual, packaged together in a soap box container and designed by Jon Wozencroft, the band moved on to indie label Rough Trade Records, where they would stay for the rest of their career. Their fondness for remixes was evident on their first Rough Trade release, a 7-inch EP featuring eight, 1 minute songs and titles "Autumn Cut Back Job Lot Offer", released in early 1987. The following year, they released their second album, '76 Kids Forever, which they described as a "soap opera musical". With Childs departing, the band continued for one final effort, 1990's Ko-Opera album, before splitting up.

Raise The Dragon was a duo from Scotland (Richard Spellman - vocal & Sean Lyons -guitar) who released one only Ep before quickly changing their name to Intimate Strangers to come out with an album in 1986 on IRS Records. Mark Fox and Les Nemes from Haircut 100 played on this album. Sean has played the guitar with such diverse artists as George Clinton, Robyn Hitchcock and Brian Kennedy, toured in '98 with French star Patricia Kaas and even played banjo on "5-6-7-8" by Steps (a career high?). He has collaborated with Stewart Copeland on work included in Rumble Fish and Highlander 3 amongst other films, and David Bowie recorded one of his first songs "Criminal World" on the "Let's Dance" album.
Back in 1976 he was a member of art rock band Metro together with Peter Godwin before forming Raise The Dragon.

She came to the church i used to go about 15 years ago to tell us about her time as a sort-of popstar (no juicy info about Cliff!). [at least i think she did - i may have got her mixed up with the woman from Heartbeat who definitely came to our church - Tears From Heaven 1987!]

HMHB and Fuzzbox were getting a lot of media interest at this stage, but what has emerged in the last few weeks is that their tiny labels, Probe Plus and Vindaloo, didn't know how to play the chart game. They ended up splitting their sales with 2-track singles and EPs, rather than offering the usual 7" and 12" options.

It will be interesting to see the sales pattern of another Vindaloo release, in the summer of '86, which reportedly achieved high sales but a relatively low chart placing.
