I'm going to post more about this at the weekend when I've had a chance to check some additional figures but from the additional sales information that kobyhadrian sent me a few days ago it's looking increasingly likely that Gallup and the BPI were using a multiplier of 18, not 17, in 1986.
I'm going to run some additional checks, not just on 1986, but also on 1984, 1985 and 1987 too (the latter weekly charts will be posted in the new year). When I've done this, at some point over the weekend, I'll post a few lines about my findings.
