Michael Buble returns to Number 1 on Official Albums Chart with festive staple Christmas

As SZA, Elton John, Harry Styles and more climb

Michael Bublé sees see his yuletide staple Christmas return to the Number 1 spot this week.

The album, which includes Top 40 tracks It’s Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas (7) and Holly Jolly Christmas (24), peaked atop the Official Albums Chart upon its original release in 2011, and last rebounded to the summit in December 2021. SZA’s second studio LP SOS is also on the ascent, up one spot (3), while Elton John’s Diamonds lifts 9 as it enjoys a Top 5 return (5). Harry Styles’ former Number 1 LP Harry’s House also climbs this week (6).

Following the release of his Avatar 2: The Way of Water soundtrack single, Nothing Is Lost (You Give Me Strength), The Weeknd’s hits collection The Highlights is on the rise (7), as are Fleetwood Mac’s seminal Rumours (8) and Arctic Monkeys’ 2013 record AM (9).

Other notable climbers in Top 40 include Eminem’s Curtain Call – The Hits (up seven to 11), ABBA’s timeless Gold - Greatest Hits (also set to lift seven to 13), Fleetwood Mac’s 50 Years – Don’t Stop collection (15) and Luke Evans’ A Song For You (22).

Elsewhere, Bing Crosby’s Christmas Classics (27), Elvis Presley’s ELV1S – 30 Number 1 Hits (31), Little Mix’s Between Us (35), Taylor Swift’s 1989 (38) and Eminem’s second hits collection Curtain Call 2 (39) all return to the Top 40.

Music Week: Singles

Christmas is over but you wouldn’t know it looking at the singles chart where seasonal songs make their biggest impression ever, occupying a record 60 positions in the Top 75, with Wham!’s 1984 nugget Last Christmas back in pole position two years after it first reached the summit, and two weeks after its most recent stint, bouncing 2-1 on consumption of 79,622 units (553 digital downloads and 79,069 sales-equivalent streams).

The record that replaced it atop the list last week - delivering the fifth consecutive No.1 for LadBaby - Food Aid, dives 1-85 (10,010 sales), its decline slightly cushioned by the fact it managed 4,550 digital downloads in the week. It follows LadBaby’s introductory 2018 hit We Built This City, 2019’s We Built This City 2020’s Don’t Stop Me Eatin’ and 2021’s Sausage Rolls For Everyone, which had second week slumps of 1-21, 1-57, 1-78 and 1-29, respectively.

Two songs enter the Top 10 for the first time, and both are Christmas recordings, albeit of very different vintage. Lizzo’s newly-recorded Amazon exclusive, Someday At Christmas, vaults 15-8 (48,528 sales). On the rise for the fourth week in a row, it is her third Top 10 hit. Meanwhile, 65 years after it was recorded and six years after it first charted, Jingle Bell Rock jumps 14-7 (48,578 sales) for Bobby Helms. It was previously a Top 10 hit for Max Bygraves, whose cover reached No.7 in 1959. Though released in the USA in 1957, Helms’ recording of the track didn’t seem to get a UK release for another year, possibly because his earlier US hit My Special Angel was in the UK chart in November/December 1957.

The only song in the Top 10 not about Christmas, Firebabe nevertheless makes excellent progress for Stormzy, jumping 10-5 (57,230 sales) to surpass its previous peak of No.8.

The rest of the Top 10: All I Want For Christmas Is You (4-2, 72,253 sales) by Mariah Carey, Merry Christmas (5-3, 71,151 sales) by Ed Sheeran & Elton John, Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree (8-4, 59,083 sales) by Brenda Lee, It’s Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas (11-6, 50,467 sales) by Michael Bublé, Fairtytale Of New York (13-9, 47,304 sales) by The Pogues & Kirsty MacColl and It’s The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year (21-10, 45,901 sales) by Andy Williams. The Lee and Bublé tracks both achieve all-time peaks.

The threshold for Top 10 status this week – 45,901 units – is the fourth highest of exactly 1,200 weeks that have thus far elapsed in the 21st century, and the highest since Beneath Your Beautiful by Labrinth feat. Emile Sande set the 21st century record, racking up 58,319 sales exactly 10 years ago.

Aside from LadBaby (see above), Top 10 departees are: Escapism (6-13, 43,009 sales) by Raye feat. 070 Shake, Christmas Drillings (3-27, 30,687 sales) by Sidemen, Let Go (9-31, 26,294 sales) by Central Cee and F**k The Tories, which falls from No.7 to a position outside the chart for K**ts, on consumption of 2,683 units.

One of the most popular movies streaming on Amazon over Christmas was its own romantic comedy Your Christmas Or Mine? Its soundtrack album, comprising 10 exclusive recordings, jumps 13-2 in the compilation chart (2,308 sales), while three of its songs simultaneously invade the Top 50. Leading the way, Sam Ryder’s recording of White Christmas jumps 54-41 (17,507 sales), while Together This Christmas – No.74 a fortnight ago – vaults 85-47 (16,771 sales) to become Maisie Peters’ first Top 50 entry, and Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree explodes 80-49 (15,876 sales) to become the first Top 75 entry for Swiss-born Tamil singer Priya Ragu. Beka’s version of What Christmas Means To Me is on the album but not in the Top 75 singles chart, where the best-known recording of the track – a joyous 1967 rendition by Stevie Wonder – makes its long overdue debut, entering at No.72 (11,607 sales).

More Amazon exclusive make their chart debut, specifically All I Want (For Christmas) (100-64, 13,414 sales), the introductory hit for 20-year-old German singer Zoe Wees, surpassing the 2019 No.73 peak of Liam Payne’s recording; and Last Christmas (No.70, 11,807 sales), the fourth hit for 19-year-old UK-born Canadian Lauren Spencer-Smith, and the sixth version of the Wham! song to chart.

Also making their first Top 75 appearances: Little Saint Nick (96-57, 13,847 sales), a 1963 Beach Boys recording, which becomes their 31st hit and first addition to their tally since 1996; Under The Mistletoe (83-61, 13,612 sales), a 2020 duet between Kelly Clarkson and Brett Eldredge, her 22nd hit, his second; and My Only Wish (This Year) (91-68, 12,525 sales), Britney Spears’ 35th hit, dating from 2000.

Introduced by Judy Garland in 1944, Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas was recorded twice by Frank Sinatra, first in 1947, then with a lyrical makeover a decade later. Both versions feed into the 93-67 (12,758 sales) climb for the song, which thus becomes his 40th hit this week. Sinatra is also one of three singers whose recording of Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow! reach new peaks this week. His rat pack pal Dean Martin leads the way (28-20, 36,526 sales), followed by Sinatra (47-33, 24,349 sales) and Michael Bublé (69-44, 17,158 sales).

There are also new all-time peaks for: Underneath The Tree (18-12, 43,416 sales) by Kelly Clarkson, Feliz Navidad (29-21, 35,993 sales) by Jose Feliciano, Sleigh Ride (30-22, 35,294 sales) by The Ronettes, Holly Jolly Christmas (31-23, 34,194 sales) by Michael Bublé, Snowman (35-28, 30,680 sales) by Sia, Santa Can’t You Hear Me (43-34, 23,870 sales) by Kelly Clarkson & Ariana Grande, The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting On An Open Fire) (50-35, 23,682 sales) by Nat King Cole, A Holly Jolly Christmas (68-42, 17,353 sales) by Burl Ives, Christmas Without You (58-43, 17,179 sales) by Ava Max, Oh! Santa (60-50, 15,716 sales) by Mariah Carey feat. Ariana Grande & Jennifer Hudson and Cuddle Up, Cozy Down Christmas (89-55, 14,262 sales) by Dolly Parton & Michael Bublé.

This week last year saw the entire Top 10 made up of Christmas songs for the first time ever. Stormzy prevents that from happening this week – but overall Christmas penetration of the chart reaches another peak. In total there are 18 Christmas songs in the Top 20, 34 in the Top 40 and 60 in the Top 75. In the same week last year, there were 19 Christmas songs in the Top 20, 33 in the Top 40 and 52 – the previous all-time high - in the Top 75. On the Top 200 Combined Tracks chart – where ACR and primary artist rules don’t apply – Christmas has even more of a stranglehold, with the only regular releases to make the Top 40 this week being Firebabe by Stormzy (No.26) and Escapism by Raye (No.32).

Overall singles consumption is up 0.64% week-on-week at 25,722,003 units – their highest ever level, and 7.51% above same week 2021 consumption of 23,924,330 units. Paid-for sales are down 29.62% week-on-week at 303,187 – 19.12% below same week 2021 sales of 374,874.

Music Week: Albums

More than 11 years after it first topped the chart and two years after it last reached the summit, Michael Bublé’s modern evergreen Christmas takes advantage of a weak market to return to pole position.

Its consumption up 42.83% week-on-week to 19,985 units (434 CDs, 151 vinyl albums, 331 digital downloads, 19,069 sales-equivalent streams), it has now spent as long at No.1 – five weeks – as the rest of Bublé’s canon combined. It easily outsold last week’s No.1, Midnights, which slides to No.2 for Taylor Swift on consumption of 12,366 units.

Two weeks after its opening run of 58 consecutive weeks in the Top 10 came to an end, = bounces 11-4 (6,762 sales) for Ed Sheeran. Diamonds (14-5, 6,393 sales) by Elton John, The Highlights (12-7, 6,155 sales) by The Weeknd, Rumours (13-8, 4,914 sales) by Fleetwood Mac and AM (15-9, 4,721 sales) by Arctic Monkeys also return to the Top 10

The rest of the Top 10: SOS (4-3, 7,858 sales) by SZA, Harry’s House (8-6, 6,288 sales) by Harry Styles and There’s Nothing But Space, Man! (6-10, 4,626 sales) by Sam Ryder.

Harry’s House has remained in the Top 10 continuously since release, a period of 32 weeks, and emerges as the biggest album of 2022, with to-date consumption of 460,432 units. Ed Sheeran’s = is No.2 for the second year in a row, with 2022 consumption of 433,021 units being very slightly more than the 432,494 – in nine weeks – that made it 2021 runner-up. The only other album to exceed 400,000 sales in 2022 was Midnights, which achieved consumption of 416,965 units for Taylor Swift in just 10 weeks.

Exiting the Top 10 are: Christmas With Cliff (2-12, 4,557 sales) by Cliff Richard, Gold Rush Kid (9-14, 4,264 sales) by George Ezra, A Family Christmas (5-20, 3,256 sales) by Andrea, Matteo & Victoria Bocelli, Only The Strong Survive (10-24, 2,898 sales) by Bruce Springsteen and Silver Bells (7-38, 2,462 sales) by Andre Rieu & Johann Strauss Orchestra. Despite falling out of the Top 10, Christmas With Cliff was the week’s biggest seller on CD, which accounted for 83.70% (3,814) of its sales.

It is very noticeable that Christmas-themed albums that rely on retail sales have made heavy falls, while those that derive the bulk of their consumption from sales-equivalent streams are booming.

That includes Bing Crosby’s Christmas Classics, which reached No.69 in 2019, and No.36 last year, a peak it smashes as it speeds 91-27 (2,778 sales) this week, to become his highest-charting album since Live At The London Palladium reached No.9 in 1977.

The BBC screened its annual Carols From King’s on Christmas Eve, resulting in a spike in consumption of 212 albums by the King’s College Choir, with five occupying berths in the Top 200 as a result. Two of them made the Top 75: Christmas At King’s (165-62, 1,898 sales) and Carols From King’s College, Cambridge (140-67, 1,729 sales). Both are in the Top 75 for the first time, with previous peaks of No.81 and No.100, having been released in 2008 and 1997, respectively.

Nat King Cole reached No.25 in 1988 with Christmas With Nat King Cole, a TV-advertised album on the Stylus label. A 2011 release of the same title on the Past Classics label makes its first Top 75 appearance this week, vaulting 176-58 (1,937 sales). Another of the legion of Cole compilations, The Christmas Song, reached No.49 in 2020, and almost matches that peak this week, jumping 83-52 (2,094 sales).

No.32 on initial release in 1994, Mariah Carey’s Merry Christmas climbed as high as No.34 last Christmas, and now jumps 95-48 (2,136 sales)

No.4 on release in November, actor Luke Evans’ second album, A Song For You slipped as low as No.55 but has since climbed for three weeks in a row. Previously advancing to No.46 and then to No.30, it now jumps to No.22 (2,980 sales), its two most recent climbs doubtless being helped by BBC One’s December 22 screening of his 60-minute special, Showtime!.

Amy Winehouse’s 2006 monster Back To Black slips 45-50 (2,107 sales) on the overall album chart this week but the 1,130 copies it sold on vinyl during the week raise its cumulative vinyl sales to 201,068. It is only the second album to surpass 200,000 copies on vinyl this century, the other being Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours, which itself sold 1,813 copies in the format in the latest frame, raising its overall tally to 234,045.

Seven previous studio albums by Sugababes reached the Top 20 with two of them reaching No.1 but The Lost Tapes – which dropped digitally on Christmas Eve, features the act’s original line-up and was recorded between 2012 and 2014 – makes a muted debut at No.150 (1,108 sales).

Now That’s What I Call Music! 113 is No.1 compilation for the sixth week in a row with sales down 50.20% week-on-week at 3,925 (3,379 CDs, 545 digital downloads).

Overall album sales are down 10.95% week-on-week at 2,078,437, 12.64% above same week 2021 sales of 1,845,157. Physical product accounts for 419,898 sales, 20.20% of the total. Vinyl accounted for 175,043 of those physical sales (41.69%), down from a massive 240,602 units but a lesser 35.51% share the previous week. Vinyl’s highest weekly consumption in the 21st century remains the 246,649 units sold in the immediate pre-Christmas week in 2017.

In May 2007, McFly's double A side single "Baby's Coming Back/ Transylvania" dropped from the top spot to number 20; the biggest fall from the summit in chart history. A drop of this magnitude had been registered on one previous occasion when, in January 2005, the limited edition re-issue of Elvis Presley's "One Night / I Got Stung" fell to number 20 after a single week at number one. So this 'honour' is in fact shared. Elvis fans are quick to point out that (a) there were insufficient stocks in the shops (due to its limited nature) and (b) the tracks had been available as singles before. McFly fans have no similar defence as it remained freely available and was on first time of release.

Prior to the Elvis incident outlined above, Harry Belafonte's "Mary's Boy Child" had held the record for biggest drop (for 47 years!) from the top; no. 1 to no. 12 in the post-Christmas change of heart of record buyers.

Of the 3,664 chart weeks, we have had a number 1 fall to each of the positions 1-14. The largest drop within the chart was down to 97.

Today is the second largest fall within the chart - but next week we shall (probably) have the biggest. And again for Wham! The two chart weeks below feature the number 1 falling completely out of the entire Top 100.

How would Wham be the biggest fall within the chart? Isn't it going to fall out totally again - or do you mean it will land in the 101-200 combined chart positions?

On Billboard, there were also weeks in the 1940s when White Christmas was excluded from the first chart of the year but I'm not sure if that happened on the 'Missing Charts' in the UK, and it may just have meant that Decca had deleted it and didn't want it on the chart even though stocks were still selling.

The Missing Charts are based on dealer orders not sales. So Dealers simply stopped ordering Christmas songs.
