  • Radio Luxembourg Charts : 1970s

Radio Luxembourg was essential evening listening for everyone growing up with music in the '70s, particularly before the arrival of Independent Local Radio in late '73.

Through much of the '60s RL used the NME singles charts but by the end of the decade they were broadcasting a curious (maybe airplay based) chart that bore little resemblance to the NME (or, indeed, the "official" BMRB) chart.

Matters got more interesting in mid '71 when the chart date changed from Sunday to Tuesday and the chart compilers took to predicting the upcoming BMRB chart for their own chart!

A few RL charts were posted on UKMIX years ago but I'll start posting the complete 1970s charts here.

This will be very interesting. I used to listen to the Radio Luxembourg chart every Tuesday from 1974 to 1979 and wrote many of them down. It was basiically a made up chart which was meant to predict the next week's BMRB chart, with the chart being compiled by Tony Prince. Some weeks he got it spectacularlry right - and other weeks he got it spectacularly wrong. The ouitliers were usually when it was a Bank Holiday and the BMRB chart was delayed by a day. Luxy would still go for a Tuesday chart, often with wild results.

Tony Prince's boss was Alan Keen who had compiled the Big L Top 40 after Tony Windsor had fallen out of favour. The Luxembourg audience at this time was 12.5 million in the UK with another 6 million European listeners. It was targeted at people under 34, as they had the highest propensity not to watch television.

Plus it was the only chance to hear pop music on an evening in most parts of the UK. My local ILR station (Metro Radio) tended to play specialist music (country, jazz etc) on an evening and then had a phone in, with James Whale, from 10pm, so I tended to listen to Radio Luxembourg most evenings. Radio 1 closed down at 7.30pm and then only re-opened for John Peel from 10pm to midnight during the week.

I'm loving these charts as I listened to all of the above back then. If I remember correctly the ones above were broadcast still on a Sunday night at 11pm. Throughout the late sixties I had listened to occasional Luxembourg charts chart shows but towards the end of 1969 when I was 15 I got into them big time and it became a weekly routine. The first one I tuned into then had Lou Christie at No 1 with I'm Gonna Make You Mine.

Luxembourg still unusually started the chart run down with the No 1 record down to 20. Just after the Powerplay 'On the hour every hour' the chart intro started and Paul Burnett announced Lou Christie strikes gold at No 1. Magical stuff. DJ's were DJ's then, professional witty, with their own unique gimmicks and presentation style.

The comment was made that Luxembourg tried to second guess the next BMRB chart but I honestly can't see that. If you look at the charts above for example, they are all over the place. Tom Jones for example was always a million miles away from No 1 peaking at 10 on BMRB. The Luxy chart also moved at 100 miles an hour especially for records dropping out.

I think it more likely it was made up from the DJ's preferences.

That said I loved it. I loved its unpredictability, surprises, and chart entries that never appeared even in the lower regions of the BMRB chart. How many of you can remember Colours Of Love with Mother Of Convention charting in the Top 20 for a few weeks in '69. Never heard on Radio 1 but much played on Luxembourg. Give it a spin and take a trip down memory lane to when music was fun and not to be taken too seriously. If you do I bet you will remember one of your own teachers the song describes. It did for me.

Thanks Metalweb for taking me back to these happy times from my teenage years. I'm loving it.

Tony Prince did once admit that he was trying to forecast the following weeks BMRB chart though this was in the mid to late 1970s (when I listened regularly). There was an interesting article which was an interview with Tony Prince but it has long gone from the internet. In it he explained how he compiled the chart and what he was trying to achieve (which was essentially to be ahead of the BMRB chart)

However there are snippets of information still out there, such as

              https://www.facebook.com/groups/Luxy...2285863795604/

I began to listen to the Luxy chart in early 1974 though until the following year I would often miss the second half of the chart due to early bed times. The Sunday chart of Luxembourg had by that point become a repeat of the Tuesday chart. I gave up listening to Luxembourg in 1979 when Radio 1 started to have mid evening programming (Kid Jensen if I recall) and so I could listen to music without it fading in and out.

The idea of counting up the chart - 1 to 20 - was said to be the idea of a certain charity fundraiser whose name I won't mention. If I recall he also did this in the 1970s and 1980s on one of the charts each week on his Old Record Club on Radio 1.

They changed to presenting it in the '20 to 1' order on 23-Aug-70.

Was that around the same time they extended it to a Top 30 ?

i forgot to mention those Luxembourg 'fade outs' , so frustrating if it was during one of your favourite records but we just lived with it and moved the transister around to try and improve the signal.

Yeah Robbie because of the later revelations I don't look back on the Old Record Club with the same fondness either. Another show once revered and now reviled.

The practice of guessing the next BMRB chart seems to have started in May '71 when the chart date changed to Tuesday. If anything, these 1970 charts look like a wild guess at two or three BMRB charts ahead - with records peaking on BMRB being quickly whisked out and many in BMRB's lower reaches getting fast tracked into the RL 20...

I used to love listening to the Old Record Club as it was a way of getting to record some oldies. I think that was the version of the programme where he would play the top 10 then a handful of records that peaked much lower down the chart so I would sit there with tape recorder at the ready. It was the only JS programme I liked. My mother said I used to hide behind the settee when he was presenting Top Of The Pops in the late 60s and early 70s! Most people did that to hide from the Daleks!

The signal fades weren't as bad for listeners in the north east as they were for listeners on the west coast. That said, Radio Luxembourg , on 208m, was next to BBC Radio Newcastle on 206m so sometimes BBC RN would bleed across the Luxembourg signal. This was especially true in summer when Radio Luxembourg would sometimes have a poorer signal due to the lighter nights.

The most frustrating signal was AFN - Europe as the signal would suddenly fade in and out and some nights was virtually unlistenable while other nights it was fine.

Finally, Radio 1, while still on 247m, was prone to interference from Radio Tirana (Albania) on an evening. So much so that one night John Peel quipped that Radio 1 was being sponsored by Radio Tirana! Apparently it often made the station unlistenable on an evening in East Anglia. Here in the north east we would just hear the Radio Tirana interval signal faintly in the background.

^ memories of short wave radio interval signals in the late 1970s!

Not so easy if secretly listening under the bedclothes, I seem to recall!

At the risk of being pedantic, I would describe the chart as 'faster' rather than 'predictive'. A faster chart cannot be truly predictive, as the chart runs are shorter and therefore peaks have to be higher.

It seems that their first post-NME chart was on 30-July-67.

I really am lovin' seeing these charts again that I listened to faithfully every Sunday night at 11. Yeah like Metal and later Robbie it was from under the bedclothes just loud enough so my parents wouldn't hear. Looking back I think they probably did and just smiled and turned a deaf ear

Brotherhood Of Man's United We Stand was an anthem of sheer class and was a big US hit for them as well.

I bought Steam's Na Na etc way back in December 1969 when it topped the US chart and it took ages to happen here.

Also loved and bought The Tams Be Young Be Foolish Be Happy, huge at Lanark Grammar School Disco.

Nancy Sinatra was 21 in BMRB on 11-Jan. I only noticed the omission because I was looking down to see if they ever had one that wasn't in the BMRB chart and, so far, they haven't.
