Hello all, in the vein of Mr. Tibbs' excellent Ultimate Averaged Chart (UAC), here is a similar thread featuring the UK Album Charts.
On the 28th July 1956, Record Mirror (RM) started to publish a 5-position album chart. From then until November 8th 1958, RM was the only album chart in the UK. Then on the 8th November, Melody Maker (MM) started to publish a 10-position chart. Fortunately Mr Tibbs is posting the RM LP chart from then until RM finishes publishing their own chart in 1962 (https://www.ukmix.org/forum/chart-di...art-every-week). The early Guniness Album books were not aware of the RM chart and started with the Melody Maker chart in 1958, until they were informed by Alan Smith of its existence. As with the singles, the OCC have revised history deciding who was considered 'official' based on the longest chart at the time (so RM until 1st November 1958, and then MM). However, as we do know - at least for their singles chart - RM was using approximately 60 dealers while MM was only using around 25. Initially the inverse points for a chart of 10 positions will be applied to the two charts and then as per the UAC, this will be multipled by the number of dealers and the value summed for the charts. The dealer numbers will change as per the UAC (please see the UAC thread for information on the sources of the number of dealers (https://www.ukmix.org/forum/chart-di...rt-re-imagined).
In 1960, the 20-position RR chart (again now deemed by the OCC as the 'official' album chart and again with 1/3 the number of dealers) was started and this will be included when the time comes. In 1962, the RM chart ceased and they started to print the RR chart, so there will be adrop to 2 charts again. Fortunately NME also began to publish a chart in 1962 and so this will also be included. The final chart to be included will be the DISC charts in 1966/1967.
All albums to chart will be listed, though there will be a Top 10 (or 20 or 30) section and then others a la the excellent Extended RM Chart of Mr Tibbs (https://www.ukmix.org/forum/chart-di...d-and-extended).
I'm not sure how regular the posts will be - especially as the charts get bigger and there are more of them. For comparison, the purely averaged (a la if the BBC had done this for the albums and did do for the singles). At the least there will be the charts for each publication each week together.
As previously, the idea behind these charts have been discussed by a small group whom I'd liek to thank for their support and guidance. Further suggestions are also welcome.
