  • I think RR is mistaken. Volumes 3 and 4 of the Riddle set (HMV CLP 1347-8) went on sale in May 1960 and Volume 5 in July (HMV CLP 1353). These were reviewed in the newspapers, which don't mention Brunswick.

    Comment

    • Based on the OCC and the data I have from kingofskiffle Ella Sings Gershwin is on the Brunswick label and so is the 1954 reissue of the original 1950 Decca release with Ellis Larkins. The version to chart next week is on HMV and the label calls it Ella Sings Gershwin Volume 5 (Arrangements and Orchestra conducted by Nelson Riddle), while the back cover says Ella Fitzgerald sings the George and Ira Gershwin Songbook volume 5 (music arranged and conducted by Nelson Riddle). The track listing is completely different for the two albums and so it is entirely possible that they both charted.

Yes Elvis gets cheated out of a no.2 by RR.

      • See the scans. I'd suggest that if they were wrong it was because of wrong data received.

        • I agree that we have to go with the published chart info in RR unless we have proof they got it wrong, which I don't.

          • Of course you may be right, but as we don't know for sure, as you say, we'll have to 'trust' RR despite their imperfect record.....

            • Fortunately RR can't keep Elvis off the no.1 spot this week - and why isn't Gigi on MM? Apart from that, it is again a Top 20.

              • High Society was still being shown in some London cinemas.

Freddy Cannon had a new single out - Chattanooga Shoe Shine Boy/Boston (My Home Town) - but it didn't chart on RR (but maybe boosted the LP). Cannon's co-producer was Bob Crewe, later famous with The Four Seasons.

Elvis slays the chart with 181.48%

Elvis is about 1200 percentage points behind Gigi so I reckon it's 50:50 whether he catches Gigi by the end of 1960 (otherwise he definitely does it in 1961). This would put him 2nd behind South Pacific. Obviously, if he keeps two albums in the top 5 for the next 6 months he'll do it quickly, especially if Gigi drops below 5.

                • Gigi will actually fall below My Fair Lady later in the year, so My Fair Lady may overtake Gigi...

                  Comment

                  • Yes, it just depends on how many points My Fair Lady can get in its last 35 or so weeks when it will be below the top 5 but still making a steady percentage per week, whereas (I think) Gigi will be gone forever after 29.10.60.

                    • The free Caruso disc must include some of the earliest recordings ever to reach the albums chart (1904-1910 or so).

                      • Again a Top 20 and again Gigi is missing from MM. Good agreement with the Top 4.

Oh yes, sorry forgot to mention that. You can see from the issue at worldradiohistory.com (https://worldradiohistory.com/UK/Mel...-07-30-OCR.pdf on page 2) that this issue they start saying "Data supplied by over 100 record dealers", whereas the previous week (https://worldradiohistory.com/UK/Mel...-07-23-OCR.pdf) they listed 39 dealers as sources of the data. Surprisingly there doesn't appear to be any other mention of this increase in the issue...

Of course MM is now dominant and RM and RR combined are not able to compete - however, it won't be as straight forward as the the MM top ten and the rest..... (or at least not quite).

                                  • If I took the above table forward to 13.8.60, South Pacific would be No. 1 and Cliff Richard would be a New Entry at 8, Peter Sellers at 10.

                                      • This was Marty Robbins' entire albums chart career until a 1979 compilation. Ella Fitzgerald had more weeks than him in 1960 but doesn't return until 1980.

It would be interesting eventually to compile a list of acts who only ever have one week on the UAC, with the lowest possible score at that time (30 points here).

                                        • Weird how Ian Menzies and his Clyde Valley Stompers can be at 4 in RM but nowhere in MM and RR. Perhaps this is related to regional sale variation? Again RR is missing the MM Top Ten selling Peggy Lee.

                                          • This thread is a revelation brain in highlighting these glaring differences between the charts that we would otherwise miss just like The UAC did too.

Ian Menzies only spent 2 weeks on the RM chart with Have Tartan - Will Travel so it will be interesting to see what happens next week... (*spoiler* still only on RM)
He also will have another album later in 1961 so we'll have to wait and see how that fares (and it has a longer chart run in RM)

                                              • Well of course at this time the UAC had 5 singles charts, so when there was a 'stray' position it was easier to iron out.

On a slightly related matter ... will you be including the Music Echo charts from May 1965?

The reason I ask is that it seems to me that upon the Disc & Music Echo merger their L.P. chart could have been a continuation of whatever processes had put in place a year earlier by ME (even though it was reduced to a Top 10) because, as far as I can see, Disc did not have an album chart hitherto. Alan Smith thought ME sampled "50-80 returns at best". Just a thought!

brain, how will you be scoring The Crickets in relation to Buddy Holly: do they get Buddy Holly & The Crickets points as well as Crickets points (for their LPs after Buddy died)?

I have chosen not to give The Shadows credit for Cliff Records because there was no chart act called The Shadows before Cliff's first LP with them whereas there were chart acts called The Crickets, Miracles and Supremes before their lead singers got separate billing.

I combined both The Crickets and The Shadows with the scores achieved in partnership with their respective partners (Buddy Holly and Cliff Richard).
