I think this was further compounded by the fact that the BBC always tended to play the British covers rather than the American versions, maybe because the royalty figure due was less.

      • Just when we thought the days of the crooner were over Perry Como nips in and grabs #1 with a couple of ,what are essentially, very early fifties style songs.
Michael Holliday's deposed #1 is actually a pop cover of Marty Robbins's American Country and Western hit. Marty must be unhappy at this as he has already seen Guy Mitchell last year steal his thunder with Guy's covers of his Singing The Blues and Knee Deep In The Blues.

        • Since 8-Feb MM has listed only All The Way, so either Chicago dropped out of their 20 or they have decided to combine sides. NME also seems to have a general policy of combining currently - although we know that won't last.

          • First football song to chart? I think the sales were a sympathetic response to the Munich Air Disaster.

            • Magic Moments gains its flipside Catch A Falling Star as it climbs to no.1. The Top 4 are unanimous on all the charts, while the Top 10s feature the same records but have some discrepancies in their order. THree records currently list both sides; but there are no split sides. Withcraft suddenly decides to take off as it becomes the biggest climber jumping 12 places up to 14. There are 4 new entries and a re-entry (climbing back in from last week's breakers) and 2 new breakers:
12 Don't/I Beg of You - Elvis Presley and the Jordanaires
25 Whole Lotta Woman - Marvin Rainwater with instrumental accompaniment (flipside Baby, Don't Go)
27 Good Golly Miss Molly - Little Richard with instrumental accompaniment (flipside Hey-Hey-Hey-Hey)
29 Baby Lover (from the Anglo-Amalgamated film Six Five Special produced by Herbert Smith - Petula Clark with the Peter Knight Orchestra and the Beryl Stott Group (flipside Little Blue Man - Petula Clark with the Peter Knight Orchestra)
Breaker 2 The Clouds Will Soon Roll By - Tony Brent with accompaniment directed by Norrie Paramor (flipside Don't Save Your Love (For a Rainy Day))
Breaker 4 Manchester United Calypso - Edric Connor with Ken Jones and his Music (flipside Yorumba Highlife). The latter was actually released in 1957, possibly for Manchester United's succesful run at the First Division (or unsuccessful bid to win the FA Cup). As Satchmo76 points out its sales now are probably in response to the Munich air disaster.on the 6th February which killed 23 people including 8 Manchester United players. Edric Connor was a Caribbean singer and actor.

There are 11 climbers, 6 nonmovers and 8 fallers with a net fall of 4 and an average climb of 3.18 places and an average fall of 4.875.
Elvis Presley still has Jailhouse Rock the single and the EP (just - as the EP doubles its position to 30 from 15), but now also has Don"t/I Beg of You giving him a third RCA hit on the chart. . Frank Sinatra has 2 records.
There are 2 versions of Magic Moments if you include the breakers, as well as 2 Jailhouse Rock's, At The Hop, Sugartime, Raunchy (consecutive positions again at 17 and 18; though also 3 versions if you include the breakers)), and Kisses Sweeter Than Wine.

                  • Just to explain, Perry Como's double-sider doesn't qualify for combined points at this time as Magic Moments is already placed at #1 on both NME and DISC so additional points would be irrelevant.

                    • Further evidence that MM also now has a policy of combining as it lists Perry Como as a double A-side. But NME is not rigid on separating - it combines Frankie Vaughan.

No Satchmo, they don't need asterisks in this case as the sides weren't combined because Magic Moments was already #1 on NME and DISC so additional combined points wouldn't have made a difference. .

                          • I wonder if Disc have decided that Como will be the last one they separate. They didn't separate Presley when he came in last week, and next month there are entries by Pat Boone and Tommy Steele they list jointly too.

                            • The Top 4 stay the same and show perfect agreement across the charts. There are 5 records with both sides reported, but currently only one - Magic Moments/Catch a Falling Star - has split sides recorded (on NME and Disc). Two records climb 12 places this week; Good Golly Miss Molly - Little Richard with instrumental accompaniment (flipside Hey-Hey-Hey-Hey) and Baby Lover (from the Anglo-Amalgamated film Six Five Special produced by Herbert Smith - Petula Clark with the Peter Knight Orchestra and the Beryl Stott Group (flipside Little Blue Man - Petula Clark with the Peter Knight Orchestra)
There are 5 new entries (1 from the 'breakers') and a re-entry (while 2 drop into the 'breakers'):
12 Can't Get Along Without You/We Are Not Alone - Frankie Vaughan with Ray Ellis and his Orchestra and Chorus
14 Nairobi- Tommy Steele and the Steelmen (flipside Neon Sign)
20 Sugartime/Don't Let Go - Jim Dale with accompaniment directed by Ken Jones
24 Why Don't They Understand - George Hamilton IV Arranged and Conducted by Don Costa
28 (from last week's 'breaker') The Clouds Will Soon Roll By - Tony Brent with accompaniment directed by Norrie Paramor (flipside Don't Save Your Love (For a Rainy Day))

There are 6 climbers, 5 nonmovers and 14 fallers with a net fall of 5 and an average climb of 6,5 and average fall of 3.38.
Elvis Presley continues to have the single and EP version of Jailhouse Rock as well as Don't/I Beg of You on the charts (2 in the Top 5). Frank Sinatra also has 2 records.
Jailhouse Rock, At The Hop (if you include the breakers), and Raunchy all have 2 versions on the chart, while there are 3 Sugartime's.

                                    • I can't believe what I just watched. I took a look at Jackie Dennis's La Dee Dah video from '6.5 Special' back in 1958' Surely this was a joke or at least tongue in cheek.

                                        • At Prestwick Airport in 1960 Elvis recorded 'Donald Where's Your Troosers?'. His impersonation of a Scotsman at the beginning and end is very impressive.

                                            • The top 2 remain the same this week for the 4th week running. Elvis replaces himself in the Top 3 and so they are now 2 doublesided hits in the top 3 (though only one - the no.1 - is splitsided). There are a further 3 doublesided hits on the charts, but none are currently splitsided. The highest climber is Swingin' Shepherd Blues - Ted Heath and his Band up 10 places to 20. There are 2 new entries:

23 Swingin' Shepherd Blues - Moe Kaufman Quartet (flipside Hambourg Bound). Note that this is the original version of Swingin' Shepherd Blues which was recorded in 1957 and was originally titled 'Blues a la Canadiana'. Moe played the flute on this record. 24 To Be Loved - Malcolm Vaughan with the Michael Sammes Singers Orchestra conducted by Frank Cordell

There are 8 climbers, 4 nonmovers and 16 fallers with no net change and an average climb of 4.5 positions and average fall of 2.25 places.
Michael Holliday (penultimate top and tail of the chart), Elvis Presley (consecutive positions switching places at 3 and 4), The Crickets (consecutive positions at 10 and 11), Frank Sinatra (both records fall 2 places), Buddy Holly all have two records on the charts. Three versions of Sugartime are in consecutive positions on the charts from 26 to 28 (note that there are 2 at 26 rather than a 26, 27 and 28), while there are also 2 Swingin' Shepherd Blues.

                                                  • I'd assume from those tables that Elvis, Pat Boone and Lonnie Donegan will be the top 3 acts. It will be interesting to see the margins.
