In the 70 Years Series I've just issued 2007, and Lonnie is still, at that stage, in the Top 100 - 79 in terms of weeks in the longer chart (Top 75 to 1983, then Top 100 to 91, Top 75 to 94 and then Top 200 onwards), and at 32 in just the Top 75 in terms of weeks on chart.
If you look at the Top 75 since it began through to July 2017 then the Top 100 up to the current chart, Lonnie is now at 94 in terms of weeks on chart - last charted in 1962!http://thechartbook.co.uk - for the latest are best chart book - By Decade!
Now including NME, Record Mirror and Melody Maker from the UK and some Billboard charts

Ah ! I meant to mention you will notice from April 27th the store numbers for MM has increased to 27. This is the first week that they increased their dealer returns above 20. From this point on each weekly MM chart will reflect the number of store returns used as printed on the original charts in the paper for as long as that fact was detailed by them.To The Definitive Music Paper Chart

I have to say I do quite like these. I know I've said it before, but the layout with the three components is very good. And the smoothing effect of the points on the multiples is excellent. I really am enjoying thesehttp://thechartbook.co.uk - for the latest are best chart book - By Decade!

You really are welcome guys. It's gratifying to get such positive feedback and 'likes' and makes the work involved worthwhile. I can't wait to get to what is really my own era though from late1963 onwards when my musical interest was set alight and my taste in music like The Beatles, Stones, etc etc horrified my parents much to my delight. To The Definitive Music Paper Chart

Lonnie and Elvis are now both Top 5, and they haven't peaked yet. The Elvis bandwagon is only starting to roll, he also holds #19 and that's nothing to what is yet to come by the year end. Lonnie too is no flash in the pan. He has still to reach his peak by 1957. Rock'n'Roll in all its various guises is now beginning to take hold but the old brigade won't be giving up without a fight. The battle lines are drawn. To The Definitive Music Paper Chart

Wow ! Thanks guys, the Definitive Combined Music Papers Chart has already clocked up 20 likes on the introductory post on page 1 and we are only at 1956. I really am grateful to see that at least 20 of you are enjoying and following the thread which makes all the work compiling and posting worthwhile.
I'd be interested in hearing your opinions on the Gallup Points system as opposed to the Inverse Points system and if you think Gallup Points are a further improvement in smoothing and fine tuning the chart. To The Definitive Music Paper Chart

I think in these early years the Gallup sales curve is particularly useful in providing a more reliable method for combining sides. This is exemplified in the current chart where all 3 have separated MIchael Holliday with different and conflicting positions which the DMPC has made sense of, and put it in the Top 10 where it should have been. We have also seen how useful this has been to settle the separating/combining different treatment of a record between the charts.
When separation becomes reduced to an NME-only issue I expect the big advantage of the Gallup curve will be to shine a clearer light on those weeks where there was a disputed positional situation between the charts. There has been a lot of harmony in the top echelons recently, but we know that can easily change!

Honestly what I like most is the amount of actual data presented in a small area, that's why I read this thread. Not for the combined rankings which I rarely even look at. I do prefer Inverse if I had to pick, it's more scientific data driven and is not susceptible to personal bias of how the charts would look best to any specific person. My big issue with Gallup method is that it assumes sales patterns almost thirty years earlier and during a very volatile period of music - Birth of rock Beatles etc - would mirror those patterns from the baseline decades later. Unless I misunderstand the writeups that said 1983 was the baseline,
As I said though, I'm here for the side by side data presentation and that is awesome. So thank you.Last edited by MAPL; Sun March 19, 2023, 12:08.

As for Gallup, I would agree to disagree, if you look closely you will see that the Gallup Points system chart position outcome does not differ greatly from Inverse Points results. This proves it works similarly, BUT by using sales related data we believe it is just as relevant for this time frame and the sixties to come because it fine tunes the chart much more effectively than Inverse Points does, as Inverse Points for example advocates a #1 record sells ten times more than a #10 record, or, thirty times more than a #30 record which clearly isn't the case. The Gallup system is closer to reality which in the absence of the actual sales figures week on week which we will never get now is at least as close to sales related as is possible.

It might be worth mentioning that the two newspaper sales surveys in the 60s show a profile more akin to Gallup than Inverse. The Sun number 2 sold 74% of the number 1, and the Mail 55%. Individual snapshots can be misleading, but they indicate that the curve - rather than the straight line - sales profile goes back well beyond the 80s.

Yes, and individual weeks came skew the data - in 1997 Millward Brown issued two sets of market reports as if they included Candle In The Wind 97 it would skew the entire graphs as that record sold more in the last 4 months of the year than some artists manage in a 50 year career!
The way the data was gathered was to take the entire 1983 sales year and take an average of all weeks to gain an average number 1 sales, an average number 2 sales, etc and from that the various ratios where devised. It should also be noted that if we take the same for 1973 (another year where we have some info on sales) the same rough comparison is true - give or take a percentage or two. The sales curve really is an exponential one, as can be seen in this scan - I forget entirely which book it is from but was issued in 1976 I believe - the chart in question shown is 8 May 1976.

So the number 1 album sold about the same as the number 4 single. In the Mail tally the number 1 album sold just more than the number 6.
I agree with Robbie's comment that LPs in the NMEs singles chart were just "a few dealers reporting the album and NME then not filtering those entries out", at least in the 60s, and that therefore it is completely correct that albums are not included in DMPC.

While it is true that the Gallup Points system assumes that the sales pattern fro 1983 is the same as for the 50/60s, in general, the sales pattern does resemble this system rather than an inverse points system. For instance, Chartwatch have adjusted their points system for every decade since 1980, but while the actual values may differ, the general ratio for each positions follow a relatively similar pattern as used here. It is likely an exponential curve rather than a straight line as asumed by an inverse system.
