Important note. The RR positions have actually been taken from the LW position of next week's chart and predicted by George R White in his EP book (https://www.amazon.co.uk/British-Hit.../dp/0956267963) and used by Graham Betts and others where no position is known as there were distribution problems with this week's issue of RR. I've italicized the six positions that are not definite (11-13,.16,19-20)

    • I bet Betts has been far too rational. Judging by their volatility at the top, the real RR placings were probably records bouncing in from nowhere.

      • Actually the original source for these is the George R White EP book

        • Yes, could be. It was actually the George R. White book on the EP charts entitled “British Hit EPs 1955-1989” that provided the 'missing' positions (and which Graham Betts is using; so George did the estimating, but like you say the volatility of the RR chart and the lack of other sources will make it difficult.

I've edited my post to correct this.

There is a similar problem with the LP chart and I've modified the post in the UAAC thread to reflect this. This is further confused by a small column in the 6th May issue of RR that states:
"Rank Buy Bought: Rank records are delighted with the success of jazzman Bob Wallis' first LP for their BUY series. First press of the LP, which was released on April 14th, has already sold right out. The disc appeared in the Record Retailer best selling LP chart last week and showed in several other charts."

This appears to correspond to Everybody Loves Saturday Night - Bob Wallis and the Storyville Jazz band that will chart (again) in June.

          • Yes, the Wallis LP was advertised in the Sunday Mirror on 24/4/60. The first pressing sold out "within a fortnight" (Ealing and Acton Gazette, 18/6/60)

OCC just makes up a Top 16, with discrepancies as per the comment posted there:

            • Strictly Elvis remains at no.1 (no.1 on MM and no.3 on RR), while RR has Emile at no.1, but it is only at 4 on MM, meaning that it falls to 3 as Strictly For Grown-Ups climbs up to 2.

              • Mr. Acker Bilk Marches On entered the MM Jazz Chart on 13.12.58 (pdf at worldradiohistory.com). "C.R.E. March (Wings)"* (full title) came out in October 58, according to 45cat. Note that Mr. needs a full stop to indicate the abbreviation.

The Eddie Cochran EP has the same cover photo as the London-American 1960 version of the Singin' To My Baby LP (HA-U 2093), which discogs dates to April 1960. The LP charted on 30.7.60.

Johnny Mathis TFE 17177 came out in 1959, derived from following his other TFE releases (17056 was Aug 58, 17194 was Oct 59). However TFE 17177 gets another push in Jan 1960 to coincide with his LP, 'Ride On A Rainbow'.

Everly Brothers No. 5 was advertised on 27.8.59, Lincolnshire Echo

Strictly Elvis is still no.1 on MM, but is at 5 on RR, meaning that Emile being no.1 on RR and no.2 on MM takes the top spot this week, pushing Strictly For Grown-Ups down to 2. The Late Great Buddy Holly re-enters the MM Top 10 and so re-enters the Top 10 overall as it is still charting well on RR. The Top 10 MM are in the Top 10 UAEPC, while RR goes down to 13.

                      • The Hockridge EP was marketed in March 1960 as a tribute to Frank Loesser.

                        • Would you be interested in continuing to post the RR positions after 20/5/63 (post-UAEPC) so we can continue to analyse how the EP market reflects or differs from the LP and 45 ones? Going track by track as we're doing also has historical value.

We can also compare The Beatles' dominance with that of Elvis, Cliff and The Shadows.

I have contemplated that. It would end up being just the RR chart with mention of positions on other charts as I don't think there will be enough EPs charting on the other charts to be able to create an ultimate averaged version...

                            • Ok. We can analyze significant EPs when they make it to a singles chart.

                              • For the first time we have a no.1 for a record that is not no.1 on either of the component charts as Strictly for Grown-Ups has the best score. If Emile had been no.1 on MM instead of RR it would've been no.1 overall, but instead has to settle for 2nd place, while Strictly Elvis is only at 5 on RR and so only manages 3rd place despite still being no.1 on MM. .

Might be worth including the Music Echo Top 100 to capture more EPs.

                                  • A Top 22 this week as RR doesn't feature C'Mon Everybody or That's All. Strictly Elvis returns to no.1 as it remains at no.1 on MM and climbs back up to 2 on RR (wait and see what happens next week!). Cliff Sings No.3 enters at 8 despite only being at 10 on both of its respective charts (4,5 and 7 are also unanimous).

Follow That Girl is not the original cast, who only appear on the LP:

                                      https://www.discogs.com/master/15128...llow-That-Girl

Oriole must have knocked off a quick covers EP

Grazina Frame was in the musical and on the LP so has another chart claim to fame apart from Cliff.

Humphreys and Young previously did an LP of nursery rhymes on Oriole.

My apologies, you're right. The way they word it on the back of the EP makes it sound like it could be from the original cast, but checking with the album it clearly isn't.

                                        • Strictly for Grown-Ups returns to no.1 because Strictly Elvis crashes to 14 on RR. Cliff Richard Sings No.2 climbs to 2 despite only being at 4 on the component charts. Love Is The Thing Part 1 re-enters at 2 on RR and is not in the MM Top 10 and so returns at no.8. We have a Top 22 again because MM has C'mon Everybody (again) and a new entry Four More.

I've modified the title as suggested. It is on Columbia and Pye uses Volume though RR says volume here too!, since it is unclear what the title should be (the EP itself does not include the 2 anywhere, but it is their second on Columbia....(The volume discs are on Pye). The tracks are all on a North American LP called Introducing The Fabulous Nina and Frederik, but I don't see a UK release of this.
Four More includes 4 tracks from the 1958 LP The Chirping Crickets - with Buddy Holly now added specifically to the credits.
Manhattan/Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye was released as a single in 1957. With A Song In My Heart and Manhattan are on Ella Fizgerald Sings The Rodgers And Hart Song Book vol 1 from 1957, while Blue Moon is on Ella Fitzgerald Sings The Rodgers And Hart Song Book Vol.2, both are also from 1957.
Mr, Acker Bilk Sings is from 1959 (though it was recorded 20./1/1958). There doesn't appear to be any other release of these songs prior to the EP.

                                          • I've just been looking at the RR EP chart and there are major printing errors with regards to the Nina and Frederik EPs making it confusing as to which is which. The 6-09 issue (the one used for the above) has Nina and Frederik Vol II (Columbia SEG 7997) coming in at 5 (instead of Nina and Frederik no.2), Nina and Frederik (Columbia SEG 7926) at 11 [falling from 3] (instead of Nina and Frederik no.1) and Nina and Frederik Vol.1 (also Columbia SEG 7926) (re-)entering at 12 (presumably that should be the Pye version and so the name is right but the catalogue number wrong). I'm fairly sure we have it correct here and will double check that the prior RR charts (that we have) line up also - The second Pye disc clearly says Volume 2

To really confuse things in the 03-24-1960 issue Nina and Frederik has the catalogue number for Cliff Sings No.1!

                                            • Ella recorded Blue Moon in February 1956 and the other three between 21.8.56 and 31.8.56

Mr. Acker Bilk's recordings were made by this company, which then licenced them to Pye.

The Last Farewell by Roger Whittaker was also made by that outfit.

On RR, Strictly Elvis climbs back up to 8 after falling from 2 to 14 last week. Cliff Richard has 4 EPs (3 from Cliff Sings and Expresso Bongo) - Cliff Sings No.2 and no.3 are consecutive at 7 and 8, while Eddie Cochran has two consecutive EPs at 9 and 10 and Nina and Frederik have 2 (both Columbia releases) as do Elvis Presley and Buddy Hollly.

                                                • The only Paddy Roberts track I was aware of previously was "Merry Christmas You Suckers". This thread has prompted me to listen to others and the impression I get is that he was inspired by risque old English folk songs like Foggy Foggy Dew. The sort of record The Third Programme would play as part of Britain's heritage but would be banned by The Light Programme.
