  • Official Danish Singles Chart 1990, year-end (Source: BT/IFPI)

This was 1990 in the Danish Singles chart. We still have to go trough a little more than two years before the first sales chart emerges. The chart being cut to a Top 10 in April unfortunately also means that the year-end chart only consists of 10 songs.

    1 - Christina Ibsen - Bubbers Badekar
    2 - Rockrosinen & Pølseenderne - Mogensen-Mix
    3 - Sinéad O'Connor - Nothing Compares 2U
4 - Trussetyven - Jeg Er Bar' Så Go'
    5 - 2 x Kaj - Alle Børnene
6 - Roxette - It Must Have Been Love
7 - Depeche Mode - Enjoy The Silence
    8 - Madonna - Vogue
    9 - Twenty 4 Seven feat. Captain Hollywood - I Can't Stand It
    10 - Alannah Myles - Black Velvet

Big hits that didn't make it into the B.T. chart:

    - David A. Stewart & Candy Dulfer "Lily Was Here"
    - Blue Pearl "Naked In The Rain" (A HUGE local sales hit)
    - Adamski "Killer"
    - DNA feat. Suzanne Vega "Tom's Diner" (A HUGE local sales hit)
    - Jimi Bikini "Her I Vores Hus" (Big local hit)
    - Maxi Priest "Close To You"
    - Jon Bon Jovi "Blaze Of Glory"
    - Righteous Brothers "Unchained Melody" (it wasn't actually a very big local hit either)
    - Elton John "Sacrifice"
    - Beats International "Dub Be Good To Me".
    - Vanilla Ice "Ice Ice Baby" (does however chart in 1991)

    Next up: 1991!

      • Official Danish Singles Chart 1991, January (Source: BT/IFPI)

Let's do 1991. These couple of years are a lot faster with a lot fewer hits than in the 80's. 1990 only had 76 hits in the chart but 1991 has 101 hits so things get a little more back to normal.

        - Novelty at number one all month.
        - Status Quo get their third Danish hit peaking at number nine.
        - Casanova Keld is more Danish novelty. The most creative we Danes got these years was with these "funny" Danish versions of international hits. "Jeg' En Fiasko" (I'm A Failure) was a new version of Twenty 4 Seven hit "I Can't Stand It".
        - Anders And & Co. was another novelty song by members of Shu-Bi-Dua. For non-Danish viewers Anders And is Donald Duck.
        - Vanilla Ice enters and makes it to number six. This was a local number one hit.
        - Jive Bunny get their last of six hits in Denmark.
        - Robert Palmer and UB40 spend just the one week in the Danish Top 10.
        - Enigma take their first hit to number five.
        - KLF kick off a monstrous year with three number hits.

        • Official Danish Singles Chart 1991, February (Source: BT/IFPI)

          - Four different number ones this month. Two novelty songs from Denmark. The first KLF chart topper and a debut hit from Danish rap/pop group Cut 'N' Move.
          - Peace Choir make it to number two with their charity song.
          - John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John get mega-mixed into the chart peaking at number two. For Travolta this is his first hit since "You're The One That I Want" in 1979. Newton-John last charted in 1984 with her number nine hit "Twist Of Fate".
          - Julee Cruise gets her only Danish hit. A well-made Danish version of this becomes a much bigger hit next month.
          - Vanilla Ice has to settle for one week at number 10 for his follow-up to "Ice Ice Baby".
          - Cut 'N' Move from Danish city Aarhus debut at number one. Actually they take their first three hits to the top in the official chart.

                                    - Incognito "Always There"

                                    - Army Of Lovers "Crucified" and "Obsession

Some of these songs actually are mentioned in Music & Media as charting in Denmark so they must have peaked below the top ten.

Also Laus Høybye "Krummes Sang" did not enter the chart at all because it was released on a label that was not a member of Danish IFPI and therefore not allowed into the officials singles chart. This is one of the reasons for scraping the official charts altogether according to B.T. on 5 June 1992. The tipping point I think was the Shu-Bi-Dua album "13" that couldn't enter the official album chart being released on Elap Music a record company outside IFPI. B.T. say on 5 June 1992 that the album had sold 160,000 copies in Denmark which would make it one of the biggest selling albums of the year in 1992.

                                    Next up: 1992!

So here comes the year where Danish newspaper B.T. severs its ties with Danish IFPI because they feel that the official charts no longer are representative for the entire sale of music in Denmark. This happens on 5 June 1992 where B.T. dump the IFPI charts completely and instead start producing a new album chart called B.T. Toppen. This chart (they even call it Denmark's official chart) is based on actual sales figures from Danish retail chain Fona and sereval supermarket groups. B.T. do not start producing a singles chart quoting the low sales numbers for singles as the main reason.

IFPI say that the charts were never meant to be revealed publicly since they were not relevant for the consumers to begin with. The only place one can see the IFPI charts between June 1992 and March 1993 is Music & Media who are showing only the top ten singles and top ten albums. A couple of weeks during 1992 are probably not updated but I will get to that as I go through the year.

Just so you know that 1992 comes with a great deal of uncertainty.

                                      But now for the charts

                                      - Danish DJ and producer Dr. Baker tops all month.
                                      - Queen enter with their 1975 classic like in many other countries after Freddie Mercury's death.
                                      - Danish group Michael Learns To Rock debut a little late going to number four.
                                      - Rozalla charts for the first time taking her hit to number nine.
                                      - Marky Mark get a second hit but have to settle for number eight this time.
                                      - NKOTB (New Kids On The Block) enter for the first and only time in Denmark.
                                      - Danish singer Hanne Boel gets her second and last singles hit.
                                      - Danish group News chart in English for the first time. They don't chart again until 2008 (with a re-release)
                                      - A-Ha chart for one week at number 10 with their 10th and final Danish singles hit.

                                              • Official Danish Singles Chart 1992, June (Source: Music & Media/IFPI)

So B.T. stops printing the official Danish charts (Albums chart top 30 and singles chart top 10) on 5 June 1992. They have a big article in the paper on this date and the headline reads "Denmark's new chart". They completely stop dealing with singles saying the the sales numbers for singles in Denmark have hit rock bottom. They talk about checking out the Coca-Cola Eurochart Hot 100 instead if you are interested in the most popular singles in Europe.

And funnily enough one has to turn to the magazine that publishes the Eurochart Hot 100 if one wants to see what happens in Denmark. So that is what I will do from this date until the very first sales based singles Top 20 emerges on 5 March 1993.

However, it is with great uncertainty that I bring you these charts. For one, Music and Media often do not even update the Danish chart so they just publish the same Top Ten two weeks in a row. Also, you have to keep the delay in mind. Usually the chart shown in Music and Media is two weeks old so that's the way I will go about putting up the rest of the year. Finally, in 1992 M&M never shows the position for the songs or albums the week before so there is no way to actually check whether a chart is correct or not.

So, please keep that in mind when looking at the charts for the rest of 1992 and the beginning of the following year!

                                                - Metalllica top for two weeks and so does George Michael, perhaps! The last two charts (even the albums Top Ten) are completely the same so I'm pretty sure Music and Media did not put in the right charts!
                                                - George Michael enters and goes to number one for the first time in Denmark. At least for one week, maybe two.
                                                - Elton John charts again and peaks at number five.
                                                - Erasure get their biggest ever Danish singles hit topping for 12 weeks.
                                                - Danish act Ghando trance their way to number six.
