    Danish Chart(s) 1978

Okay - here goes then. I will post the charts here chronologically. But before I start - here's a little introduction.

In the years before 1979 there were no dedicated singles chart in Denmark. As seen in Billboard, the charts were a mix of albums and singles. However at the end of 1978 singles sales numbers were so high that IFPI Denmark decided to produce a singles chart (Top 10, later Top 15) from the beginning of 1979 published in Danish newspaper B.T.

I have been to the Royal Danish Library in Aarhus and the following was the first I saw regarding the Danish singles chart.

On 29 December 1978 a singles yearend chart was published and this was therefore the first real singles chart in Danish history.

    1 - Mabel - Skateboard Rider
2 - Lone Kellermann & Rockbandet - Se Venedig Og Dø
    3 - Boney M - Rivers Of Babylon
    4 - John Travolta & Olivia Newton-John - You're The Only That I Want
5 - Suzi Quatro - If You Can't Give Me Love
    6 - Boney M - Mary's Boy Child
    7 - Baccara - Parlez-Vous Francais?
    8 - Bonnie Tyler - It's A Heartache
    9 - Kate Bush - Wuthering Heights
    10 - Johnny Reimar & Smølferne - Smølfesangen
    11 - Eruption - I Can't Stand The Rain
    12 - Bee Gees - Night Fever
13 - Chris Norman & Suzi Quatro - Stumblin' In
    14 - ABBA - Summer Night City
    15 - Smokie - Oh Carol
    16 - Bee Gees - Stayin' Alive

    18 - Smokie - For A Few Dollars More

Danish Singles Charts 1979, March (Source: BT/IFPI)

          - Tommy Seebach's Danish entry for Eurovision enters at the end of the month. At that time it was not allowed for Danish radio stations to play the winning song for weeks after the "Melodi Grand Prix" had taken place and you could also NOT buy it in the stores. Therefore the winning song entered a lot later then the other entries (Kim Larsen and Grethe Ingmann) when it finally did get released.

                              - Nalle enters late on. "Amanda" is written by Kim Larsen. Official Danish Singles Chart 1980, year-end chart (Source: BT/IFPI)

So, that was 1980 on the official Danish Singles Chart. Remember that the chart is NOT consumer based but compiled by the record companies. So it might have been a totally different reality had it been over-the-counter-sales. Still, I think the charts contain a LOT of fun songs.

                                    Here's the year-end chart:

                                    1 - Earth And Fire - Weekend
                                    2 - Olivia Newton-John & Electric Light Orchestra - Xanadu
3 - Goombay Dance Band - Sun Of Jamaica
                                    4 - Lipps Inc - Funkytown
                                    5 - Diana Ross - Upside Down
6 - Bette Midler - My Knight In Black Leather
                                    7 - Johnny Logan - What's Another Year
                                    8 - Nalle - Amanda
9 - Pink Floyd - Another Brick In The Wall, Part 2
10 - Nolan Sisters - I'm In The Mood For Dancing
11 - Seebach Band feat. Debbie Cameron & Lecia & Lucienne - Copenhagen
12 - Rocky Burnette - Tired Of Toein' The Line
                                    13 - Cliff Richard - Dreamin'
14 - ABBA - The Winner Takes It All
15 - Bamses Venner - Tænker Altid På Dig
16 - Alan Sorrenti - Non So Che Darei
17 - Buggles - Video Killed The Radio Star
18 - Gibson Brothers - Que Sera Mi Vida
19 - Kelly Marie - Feels Like I'm In Love
                                    20 - Boney M - I See A Boat On The River
                                    21 - Boney M - Children Of Paradise
                                    22 - Frank Zappa - Bobby Brown
23 - Marti Webb - Take That Look Off Your Face
                                    24 - Bjarne Liller - Billet Mrk.
25 - Alan Sorrenti - Tu Sei L'unica Donna Per Me
                                    26 - Sophie & Magaly - Papa Pingouin
                                    27 - R.L. Orchestra - Rockytrain
28 - Queen - Crazy Little Thing Called Love
                                    29 - Secret Service - Oh Susie
                                    30 - Donna Summer - The Wanderer

One wonders how Frank Zappa can be at number 22 with only three weeks on the chart at number nine. Also, B.A. Robertson had 13 weeks on the chart peaking at number four. But he's not on the year-end chart...?
I suspect that IFPI actually compiled a much larger chart (maybe top 30) but for some reason they only published the top ten.

Anyway, next up is 1981. And it's a complete mess. Danish newspaper business was hit hard by a massive strike from April to July which means NO CHART was published for a total of 20 (!) weeks. However, I have found some charts in Billboard so it's not all blanks those weeks.

Official Danish Singles Chart 1981, January (Source: BT/IFPI)

Alright, ready for a new year? I hope so because 1981 is a messy one. On 27 March the Danish newspaper business was brought to a halt by a strike among typesetters lasting almost three months - until 15 June - and then again from 2 July to 12 August.

That meant that 20 weeks of charts were not published. I have, though, found a few charts in Billboard (the Danish chart was not there every week) and I have tried to fill in the blanks.

It's really a shame that these charts were never published since on 19 June when the chart returned it had been expanded to a Top 15.

However, January is all good and here are a few highlights.

                                      - Tommy Seebach charts twice. First the instrumental "Smiling Turntable" and then the cover version of "I See The Moon" which reaches number two.
                                      - Kelly Marie goes to number one for three weeks and Boney M top - once again - late on.
                                      - Police get their first of only three Danish hits and it also ends up going to number one.

Got some time right now so here comes some more Danish chart history. :-) Starting off in January there was no chart on 1 January but luckily no strike this year!

                                        - Schlager song "Snevalsen" (The Snow Waltz) hit the charts in two different versions. I wonder if this might be one of those songs that wouldn't chart had this been actual sales charts.
                                        - ABBA go into their last year together with a number one that just happens to be my favorit ABBA song.
                                        - Linie 3 are three Danish comedians still around in 2018 dividing Danes as to whether they are actually funny or not...
                                        - Shakin' Stevens gets there once again with his third and final Danish number one.

Official Danish Singles Chart 1982, September (Source: BT/IFPI)

                                            - Boney M get their last Danish hit of the 80's.
                                            - Popular Danish duo Rugsted/Kreutzfeldt (especially when it comes to albums) get their first of two singles chart entries.
                                            - Survivor chart for the first and only time in Denmark.
                                            - Famous Danish group Rocazino chart for the first time. Another big radio hit "All My Love" never charts which is very, very strange (and probably due to the fact that this is not based on over-the-counter sales).
                                            - Ex-ABBA member Frida goes to number two in Denmark.

Official Danish Singles Chart 1992, June (Source: Music & Media/IFPI)

So B.T. stops printing the official Danish charts (Albums chart top 30 and singles chart top 10) on 5 June 1992. They have a big article in the paper on this date and the headline reads "Denmark's new chart". They completely stop dealing with singles saying the the sales numbers for singles in Denmark have hit rock bottom. They talk about checking out the Coca-Cola Eurochart Hot 100 instead if you are interested in the most popular singles in Europe.

And funnily enough one has to turn to the magazine that publishes the Eurochart Hot 100 if one wants to see what happens in Denmark. So that is what I will do from this date until the very first sales based singles Top 20 emerges on 5 March 1993.

However, it is with great uncertainty that I bring you these charts. For one, Music and Media often do not even update the Danish chart so they just publish the same Top Ten two weeks in a row. Also, you have to keep the delay in mind. Usually the chart shown in Music and Media is two weeks old so that's the way I will go about putting up the rest of the year. Finally, in 1992 M&M never shows the position for the songs or albums the week before so there is no way to actually check whether a chart is correct or not.

So, please keep that in mind when looking at the charts for the rest of 1992 and the beginning of the following year!

                                                  - Metalllica top for two weeks and so does George Michael, perhaps! The last two charts (even the albums Top Ten) are completely the same so I'm pretty sure Music and Media did not put in the right charts!
                                                  - George Michael enters and goes to number one for the first time in Denmark. At least for one week, maybe two.
                                                  - Elton John charts again and peaks at number five.
                                                  - Erasure get their biggest ever Danish singles hit topping for 12 weeks.
                                                  - Danish act Ghando trance their way to number six.

The chart changes every week throughout July so my only option here is to trust Music and Media completely.

                                                    - Erasure top all month and only two different songs are at number for the rest of the year.
                                                    - Swede Dr. Alban debuts and takes his first two hits to number three.
                                                    - Huge Swedes Ace Of Base hit the chart for the first time and make it to number two first time around.
                                                    - This is a great swedish month. Roxette enter and also peak at second place.
